Is it time to once again adjust the line up to where our five best players are getting the most of the minutes? I realize we need to get guys rest but, are we putting our best five on the floor to start the game?

In my opinion we would be better to play Edey, Gillis, Newman, Loyer and Smith. This lineup leaves the opponent truly picking their own poison as everyone outside of Edey is a threat from deep. This will also allow Furst to play with TKR which seemed to work well early in the year. I would also put Jenkins as the first sub and sit either Smith or Loyer if one is struggling to score. Having Morton on the second team may improve the defense of the second squad as he can focus on stopping whomever is the best player on the floor.

What’s everyone else think? I know Matt is stubborn on certain things but surely he sees the offense being lopsided with the starters he is playing. Will he make a switch and go with a more mature and stronger lineup with shooters at every position or will he keep plugging Morton in there and let teams sag off of him to clog up the lane?

Jenkins and Kaufman-Renn need more minutes. Both are 3-point threats.

3 is worth more than 2.

Painter's overall philosophy is great.

But if Painter wants to be a great coach (and in March), you got to adjust!

2019 is only recent year where sticking to it worked in March Madness.

I don't want Edey to be NPOY. I want Purdue in the Final 4 competing for a NC.

Even if that means Edey playing a few less minutes. Zach would be more efficient, too.

But what do I know.

Hard to get that overall balance around Zach Painter talks about when multiple guys

don't get enough court time. I'm done.

Waddell makes 10 , remember Painter said
that’s to many. The reason he benched Newman last year

Morton is better at feeding Edey than Newman. IMO that’s why he starts, not his defense.

I shall take my whipping ... but, many talk about newman for Morton. What about newman for Loyer? what does that bring and take away?>
I think the thought is that whoever is defending Newman can’t sag or help off of him and that might open the floor up a little more for Loyer to operate in space like he did earlier in the year.

I don't look for Painter to adjust much of anything, especially the starting line up. My personal thought is that Newman needs to be given a legitimate chance and Jenkins needs a few more minutes to rest Smith, but I am not a four time Big Ten champ coach either. Painter and the team have far exceeded anyones expectations this year. I am satisfied to let him continue even though I see things differently. My honest opinion of the global picture is if we hit six 3s a game and Edey gives his usual performance, we are extremely difficult to beat. If we don't make 3s, TOs and FTs become much more important.

He has made 52 FGs this year in limited time. Maybe you meant 3 pt threat?

Renn has made 4 3's in limited minutes. That is still a threat, especially with more minutes.

Renn had 8 pts in 9 min. @ Michigan and Dickinson. Very impressive.

Purdue does not win that game without Renn.

Kid needs to play more. It would also give opponents 2 different front court looks

to game plan for as well.

Purdue has depth, but Waddell, Jenkins, and Renn all need to play or play more.

It would also make the starters more efficient with more rest. Just my thoughts.

Renn brings a lot of energy. I notice it every time he takes the floor.

Newman played early last year, as Painter had 2 of everything. Then he tightened the rotation and removed Newman, same as he has done with Waddell this year

I don't know if we have an answer. Smith has been a little up and down but he has been our best guard by a long shot.
  • Loyer has shot 34% (36/106) from the field and 23% (10/43) from three over the last 11 games. That is not a small sample size.
  • Morton is shooting 32.7% for the year and 28% from 3 for the year.
  • Newman is shooting 36% from the field and 33% from 3. Pretty close to Loyer's overall numbers.
  • Jenkins is shooting 34% and 31% from 3.
  • Waddell played in 17 games and scored in 3 of them and his shooting percentage is 16%.
I really am hoping we are at a low point, and we can get it turned around. I believe all these guys are capable of shooting better but in the NCAA Tournament it only takes one bad game.

Waddell is a little different in that he is a 6'8'' wing that brings lots to the table.

He played very well in Portland in limited minutes.
Really? Waddell as scored in 3 out of the 17 games he's played and is shooting like 16%. He won't play meaningful minutes this year or next, unless we have some transfers. Could he get minutes after Gillis and Morton leave in 2 years? Maybe, but we'd still have Furst, Colvin and Heide plus whatever recruits we bring in in 2024.

Why is Morton considered a “defensive specialist” when his counterpart always seems to score 25+ points? He’s slow.
Because he specializes in defense.....
Because he's guarding the other teams best scorer and he's not a lock down defender JUST THE BEST WE HAVE.....
