i have something signed by Brees, Dawson, Keyes, and griese.

I was thinking my all time ranking of Purdue football greatness is as follows:

Keyes
Brees
Griese
Phipps
Woodson
Dawson
Alstott

Am I leaving anybody out? Maybe Kerrigan and short in a few years will make the list as well.

Dishman gets overlooked because of Woodson, now that was a backfield!
I always thought Chris Dishman was a poor player at Purdue. With all that speed all I can remember is seeing him get beat time after time. However, NFL scouts saw differently and somehow he got drafted.

Leon's problem wasn't recruiting, that's for sure. Looking back, hard to believe that dude signed the overall #1 player in the country, and best QB prospect since Elway.

Griese has to be ranked above Brees. He may not have the yards, but he did all the things Brees did (won BT title & Rose Bowl), but also he kicked the FGs and the XPs.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Different time period, different expectations. Had Brees played in the late 60s I have no doubt he would have been expected to kick and do other duties as well. One was a dynamic leader and passer. The other was more of a game manager as evidenced by his later NFL career stats.

Fat Jack,he coached Purdue to 10 wins in 14 years over the best football team money could buy back then "N.D."

Plus Fat Jack got us to #1 on the preseason issue of SI, #1 in both polls (UPI and AP were the only two back then) and the winner of a #1 vs #2 showdown with ND at South Bend in 1968.

Duane Purvis. Met him a few times and played golf with him YEARS ago. He was a horse I am told. Add Len Dawson also.

NFL scouts saw something, dude played 13 years versus the NFL avg. of 3.3 years.

The Jim Young, Mark Hermann, Keena Turner years were mighty special. We were in the hunt in the B1G and won our bowl games.

Not too many schools recruited nationally In those days, and although our main competition for George was nationally-prominent Miami FL, PU was considered no slouch at the time and very much The Craddle of QBs, having produced Hermann, Campbell and Everett in a continuous string just before. Also, PU football was big in Indy then, as the Colts were new to town and sucked, and IU sucked worse! A lot of folks from WC encouraged George to attend PU so he could play for his home-state fans. If Leon just would have had an O-line to block for George, it would have been special!

I think you mean, the guy that had a hamburger named after him at XXX. I don't think anyone has ever eaten a meal and a thought like: 'Yup, I am naming my first son Angus after that steak.'

I would bet he was joking.

Could be. I know of an old guy many years ago in auld Scotland that was breeding a strain of black cattle. One day he said, "I believe I'll name them after my son Angus" and now you know the rest of the story!!!

Dave Bingaman and Don Brumm deserve a mention. Darryl Stingley was on his way till the injury.

Griese never won a B1G title. But Phipps did and never gets credit for it in these QB rankings threads.

could make a case for Tyler Stubblefield, left Purdue as the NCAA's all time leader in receptions. Always liked Dave Young too.

You are right about Phipps, the guy finished 2nd in the Heisman voting and yet, very few people mention him in the pantheon of great Purdue QBs

Lamar Lundy should be included
Great two sport star at Purdue
Great pro career with the Rams Fearsome Foursome

1971: (I've only read this in a Purdue yearbook) There were 5 Boilers on the roster that went on to have long, fairly good-to great distinguished NFL careers: Danielsen, Armstrong, Stingley, Bingham, and Butz (those are just the ones I am aware of). The team finished 3-8, losing every close game, in any way imaginable. (This has to be a record of frustration.) Then in '85, our offense had Everett, R Carter, R Wallace, M Jackson, and S Griffith, not to mention Woodson on D...all of whom had AT LEAST a cup of coffee in the NFL...yet finished 5-6, again losing in a variety of ways, including muffing a wide-open 2 pt conversion to lose vs Pitt.

With all that talent on both quads...HOW COULD THIS BE???

How did we all forget one of very, very few Boilers (only one?) to have 5 Super Bowl appearances, with 3 rings: Matt Light????

Three words to your question:'We Are Purdue'
