There are going to be days where they can't kick it in the ocean. Frustration.....youthful mistakes.....sloppy TO's....they can all happen......that was an ugly game, but Boilers closed well when it counted......again without Ray Davis.

CMP has plenty to work with again for learning purposes, but he has to be pleased at least that he is getting a couple guys to really step up each game.

However, Purdue will need to be much, much sharper when Butler, Vandy, and the conference foes come calling.

Excellent post, spot on. I love this team, so many ways to win. No one trick ponies here!

CMP just said that this team could go down one player and still be good..........he was not bragging, just being honest about his depth

Agree, our D and FT shooting were keys to the win. Shout outs to AJ, Dakota, and Hill in particular for defensive intensity. IMO they held the defensive torch on the court while Ray's injured, and the whole team was pretty good, though there were plenty of breakdowns to review and learn from.

I would add rebounding (we destroyed them 51 - 28!) and getting their bigs into foul trouble at the end of the game as additional highlights that helped us win this ugly game. How many fouls did Johnny draw? Several. Also, just our depth.

Neither team shot that well, and we were cold again from 3, but our team found other ways to close out this win. Great team effort! Boiler Up!

Dakota was lock down tonight on the butler transfer kid that started getting hot.

Ray should be proud of what he has done for the boilers these past few years. His future is bright in whatever he wants to do

The Lobos guards did very well today. Our big men/post play was good today. That is the way most of Purdue's games will go this season, at least our post play will usually out-do our guard play. That's why you want a well balanced team, fewer 20+ per game super-stars, & more players averaging 10-12 pts. a game, if you have your choice. You don't want your opposition to too easily be able to focus on any one or two key players of yours, but more have to stop several players each night/game. You/we want our guard play to balance [as best we can] that of our post play. Keep them guessing on which of your players might score 15-18, grab 10 boards, have 10 assists, or shut down the opponent's key player, in any given game.

Our team balance looks to be growing more even with each passing game. That way, when one of our key players [like an RD] goes down for who knows how long, the rest of his teammates can more easily make up for & be ready on the spot, to fill in for the missing player, at a moment's /game's notice.

And yes, even though your shot may not be going in from time to time, game to game, you/a player can always play good/determined/focused/help/team defense, in every game. Defense does win games, & championships as well. Defense lives here/Purdue!

Balance is the key, with the team, the players, & the amount we depend on any one/given player, on any given night/game.

Go Boilers!!!

Agreed. Many on this board predicted that this would be a trap game. This team still has a lot of youth, and they are still learning to be winners. MP's greatest challenge may be to keep them focused one game at a time.

Last year, we had the benefit of going under the radar through most of the Big Ten season. Right now, people are gunning for us. We're going to get everyone's best effort. Doesn't mean they'll be good - but I don't think some on here thought we would see us losing in the 2nd half today.

As was pointed out in another thread, this is why defense (and free throws) is a big deal for this team. Our offense is going to have days like today. And there's probably going to be days where we don't do that great in the paint either (due to foul trouble, a team that's capable of clogging the lane, etc.).

Going into this game, we knew they had a couple guys capable of going off - they had done it this season, but have been inconsistent. One of them was going off on us in the first half (playing with 2 fouls through a good chunk of it). We need to be a bit smarter and try to get that third foul if he's going to keep playing. But we did a great job of taking the guy who was locked in today and stifling him.

Defense like that will get us wins against teams like this - if we played like this against a Michigan State today, would we have won? Probably not. But it's going to get you through the lower/middle Big Ten type of opponents. But this is why Painter places such an emphasis on PT in terms of defense.

Also, the turnovers have got to improve. We are averaging over 13/game. Eventually that'll get you in trouble.

Yeah, I' sure that MP will have something to say about 19 turnovers. Turnovers and lack of defense for a Purdue team says lack of fucus to me. I remember that Gene Keady's teams used to struggle in games they should'nt going into finals. Next week is dead week on campus so I wonder if the big win in a tough environment against Pitt, along with prepping for finals had these guys not focussing on the business at hand.
