Thanks Boilers!

I see a second round or sweet 16 team. The team that won Gold would be a sweet 16 team if they we're in the tournament

Missing that stud 4 that can board and defend. Nearly 20 offensive rebounds given up. Can Haarms help this, that will be the next big question.

And any team would have the same issue when replacing a player like Biggie. It is something I have little doubt the staff knows they have to address and isn't going to happen overnight.

Congrats to the Boilers. Rep'd the USA extremely well. We all would have loved the gold, but silver is nothing to hang your heads over. Going to be a fun season to watch this year.

I for one enjoyed some real basketball in August!

Boiler up!

Agree, Punaj.

From disappointment can spring opportunity. Many would have thought a silver medal would be outstanding (or at least some definition of "success") before the games started......the Boilers definitely lived up to being worthy of Team USA......still could be some good surprises this season.

The journey is worth it, even if your destination is a different one than from the initial plan......sometimes it's hard to heed those words or believe them....or see the value.

Going to be hearing the name Edwards a lot this year....that's for sure.

I forget when you tell the truth on this board you're an IU fan I don't know how I keep forgetting that. So here I will exaggerate for you we're a final four team we're going to win the Big Ten and the Big Ten Tournament. We have 4 all Americans on this team. Is that better

See the problem is in your case, you really are just trolling. There is no 'truth' to the things you post and is jut incoherent rantings of an exposed IU fan pretending to be something he isn't.

If you don't like the responses there is a simple fix for you, stop posting here.

I have a hunch painter will be working on rebounding until the season starts. It's not bad to isolate a deficient area in our game and start correcting it. Better to start to sort things out now than during conference play.
Yes this team will win a lot of games with our seniors we have, but we may have to sacrifice a bit of offense to find a rebounder. Seems like we are always one piece away from getting over the top caliber match ups. It's extremely early, it may work itself out.

Great job Boilers! Played very well and represented USA strong.....

I think CMP will find that playing up tempo can lead to having to play more than just 7 or 8 players.....if going to play at that pace then go 10 or even 12 deep.

IMO, He needs to utilize Ewing and Wheeler more often and early first half to save the seniors for the second half.........

Of course if Haarms was able to play I think we have a different outcome in this game because CMP could have had twin towers in the game the whole time...

He could then play Haas and Haarms or Haas and Taylor or Taylor and Haarms.....at same time. (That will cure rebounding woe's for sure)

Excited for the season and very impressed by the growth of this team already.

Boiler Up and keep our heads high! Future is still bright.

Okay buddy if you don't think there's any truth to what I'm saying let's put a Bet On It. We won't win the Big Ten I think that goes to Michigan State we never win the Big Ten Tournament and the sweet 16 is the farthest Matt Painter has been. I'm not an IU fan you guys can make fun of them all that you want. But they made the right changes to make their program go up our program has leveled off it's not going down it's not going up it's staying around the same. We should really enjoy the win over IU this year cuz it could be the last for a while

Congratulations to our USA, Purdue Boilermakers! Very proud of you. Thank you for representing the U.S. and our University and state with class! Thank you for all the work you put in this summer to be ready for the world. You are world champions in my book and will look good with a silver medal on. Great chemistry - 3 Boiler's playing hurt...gutting it out. Enjoy the rest of your trip. You rest up and get ready for class and for baskeball practice in another month.

I wonder if they still haven't adjusted to being Swanigan-less. I felt Vince and Isaac disappeared on the boards from time to time last year and let Caleb get his. It's a big hole to fill and we can't be sloppy about it any more.

There is probably no way that in this short of a time span that you can adjust to losing someone like Biggie. It won't happen over night and will take a bit to adjust and any team that had him would need to make the same adjustment.

We were scoring so well the first few games that it wasn't needed, today it was.

You are confusing truth with opinion. Also, Purdue has won the BTT previously.

No question their offensive boards hurt. Some it looked like they just pushed USA in and was allowed a bit over the back, but they also chased down 50-50 balls. I think their offensive rebounding was huge. They were well coached, played as a team and probably ran a lot more off ball screens...like Purdue...err USA. I also think Purdue tried too hard to land the knock out punch early on the perimeter...with many shots short.

I would much rather expect a grind and approach it that way and then slowly read what was there...maybe their big guys might have been in more foul trouble. Still, this was a great experience for these kids and a game they will play over and over many times. The team was a class act and represented the whole USA well.

Lithuania played some beautiful basketball. Great ball movement after simple ball screens to always find the open man and take advantage of Haas away from the rim. Kudos to them, they deserved it. Rebounding was definitely the difference.

I like Vince at the 4 offensively. Defensively it would be nice to have a true 4 in there to help on the glass. Hopefully Painter figures that out based on match-ups each game. Ewing at the 4 and Taylor at the 5 with Vince at the 3 is probably a much better rebounding frontline and would probably be the best defensive frontline. Haas just doesn't move well enough when facing teams that are good at pulling him away from the rim. Obviously there are games he will be dominate though against teams that can't do that.

The nice thing about this years team is that assuming guys like Ewing and Wheeler develop, we will have more athletic options to throw in there if we face a team that is showing they can take advantage of Haas lack of mobility.

A lot of positive signs. I think Purdue looks good playing fast because of how many shooters we have able to spot up, athletic big men who can run the court, and guys who can attack the rim and finish. Hopefully that continues.

did Ewing or Wheeler play in the final?

I would expect him to help in this regard, but nobody knows much about him. I have to believe he could have been a big help today..in more than one way. :) As teh game was close I kept thinking fatigue and D might allow Purdue to pull this out in the fourth, but I must say...Purdue started out tight and I don't think played an intelligent game on O. I understand the heroics of previous games and the lighting it up from the 3 in the previous games, but every game is different and this was an old time Big Ten bruise them up game. Purdue entered knowing depth inside could hurt. When the shots are not falling and taken quickly...perhaps a bit more vertical movement to the basket in drives and post feeds can get you going?

I feel for the kids, but years from now they will understand the accomplishment and will have played that game over and over. I probably have 70 or so posts I haven't read, but did catch one from Boilermaker 1973. I don't know whether he is a troll or not...and I really don't care. He has an opinion friend or foe based on substance or not...but think he may have leaped a bit far. First I have no idea if this is a sweet 16 team roughly. I know that I have seen some really good teams, better than many that made it to the sweet 16, but got beat before the sweet 16. Purdue may or may not reach Boilermaker 1973 criteria. That is truly speculative at this time. What I don't think is so much speculative is that Purdue will handle winning and losing with class, will play as a team and represent Purdue well. The fans will see a team that expends energy trying hard to win and leaving it out on the court...never wondering what if they would have played harder.

Gold would have been fantastic, but silver is very good. Time to rest, count their blessings, get studying, review film, correct things and remember the pain when the other team was at center court celebrating to drive them to reach inside and push for more....and what does Purdue get with Haarms? :)

I think Vince could be effective at the three on O if a four could be a threat out to 15, but then you have other players that get pushed. I think Purdue fans should believe Taylor is going to provide help this year and was overall pretty solid for setting out so long. I have to see other competition in the states before I have an opinion on playing fast. I think generally it worked well in the WUG, but also removes the power of Haas to a degree as it takes a lot for that guy to move up and down the court and not see the ball. How long do you ignore his advantage and wear him down?

As a rule of thumb, when two good teams face off..the slower team more often than not controls the tempo and the best half court team usually wins...fully understanding that the clock is tempering that somewhat.

No. It isn't done with one guy when you don't have a rebounding freak like Biggie or Glenn Robinson. The team will learn from it and begin to get more guys tracking boards from the perimeter. It can't all be put on the 4 and 5 position.
The great part about this trip is that the team has all of their strengths and weaknesses against good competition on film in August. That will be worked on going forward. Nice info to have now instead of November and December.

yes, some of those offensive boards were long bounces that maybe the 1-3 guys were in too big of a hurry to get down the court. Purdue grabs those with an advantage and we are not talking about a loss, but instead they got the long boards...seems like almost all of them. The other team came to battle. I liked our team, but the way the opposition played today...it appeared they were mentally more focused..finding the balls and that led to some really open shots on the perimeter. sometimes that ball takes some funny bounces... :)

I can't speak to this game as I couldn't see it. Therefore my post is more general in nature. If we were getting beat inside for rebound position or getting pinned then that IS a bigger problem and speaks to the Bigs. From your comments and others i am thinking that was not the case.
If true, it's a very fixable issue.

Well, it did appear that we got pushed in some. I was secretly watching as much as possible, but due to the fact that I brought in some cajun deer sausage...I had too many visitors around my desk and couldn't watch it like I preferred...

And well done to you too Punaj! Nice work throughout! Treat yourself to a dozen from Heyerly's:)

Was it just me or did it seem like every time we got all ball on a steal or a block, they called a foul on us. This seemed to really hurt us when we could have built a lead earlier in the game. Near the end of the game, there is no way that should have been a continuation for the Lithuania player. Taylor's foul was definitely before he got any shooting motion going. Also felt there should have been a foul on Lithuania when their guy ran into Edwards on the loose ball. With the officiating, it felt like we were playing 5 against 6 out there. Very proud of our team and the class we showed during the whole tournament.

So the Big Ten Tournament been around for almost 20 years now we've been in the championship game three times only one time did we win it and that's good.

Nice try. You keep posting errors and people keep fixing your garbage. You said Purdue never won a BTT and someone corrected it. Nowhere did anyone mention it was good or that they were happy about it.
