Thad Matta Done

Will be interesting to see who they get to replace him at this point and what the recruiting fallout is.

maybe Archie had an opt out clause where if the OSU job opened up, he could leave IU.

It is possible, but I doubt that an opt-out clause is in the contract. IU was a step up for Archie and I doubt Glass would be party to IU playing second fiddle to another B1G team. If it is the case, there will be hell to pay with the IU fandom if it is exercised.

Kinda shocked to read this. But, makes me wonder if OSU would reach out to Brad Stevens. That would be a pretty good job for him I would think and would drive the hoosiers crazy since we've always been told he was set on going to IU.

Brad Stephens is not coming back to any college any time soon. I had mentioned earlier that everybody assumed he was waiting at Dayton for the OSU job to open up. When he went to IU I made a comment about it being too soon. I figured OSU was close to moving away from Thad. IU is probably a better basketball/resources fit, but if he wanted to stay in Ohio, OSU was a better choice. OSU should have parted ways right after the season. Their mistake. Dan Dakich suggested OSU was possibly uninterested in Miller or they wouldn't have waited. Don't know that I agree with that. It was bad timing, so I don't believe this was planned at all.

I don't mind anything that will drive the Loosiers mad but why in the world would Stevens leave Boston for Columbus???

He's got to be sitting in Bloomington kicking himself right now.
I doubt that. OSU athletics as a whole might be a superior athletic program from a resource standpoint with the obvious cash cow that is their top flight team, but in no way does OSU's hoops program compare to IU's in terms of fan base, expectations, statewide support, etc. OSU might swing for the fences and bring in a really good basketball coach, but half of the alumni won't care at all anyway. And half of the half that does care only cares about half the time. It's actually pretty bizarre... I saw on twitter that Thad Matt has the best all time winning percentage in the B1G (10 yrs min). Who knew?!

Health issues it looks like. I wish him well in whatever comes next.
Probably a good guess. The fact that the team is falling apart can't help matters. If was just a question of now vs. next year, the AD may have just said "screw it", and got aggressive with a change now. It's bad timing though for sure. Most coaches that were going to make a move probably already did. I suppose they could make a run at Donovan as OSU is the biggest job open right now and OSU has more than enough money in the coffers to entice him. Donovan and Meyer... that might be the best hoops and football coaching tandem ever assembled in college.

Yep...just like Brad Stevens did......he could leave Boston if the IU job opened up according to many Hoosier fans

Haha, I see what you did there.

I wonder if Chris Mack would be open to the OSU job. He'd do very well there, I believe.

The fact that OSU is more a football school might make it more attractive to a coach. It's similar to Mike Brey about to start his 18th year at Notre Dame. He's never gone to a Final Four and probably never will. At IU, fans will start to turn on you if you don't have the team deep into the tournament within a few years. A coach at OSU or ND can survive just by making the tournament almost annually and advancing to the 2nd weekend every now and again.
OSU's brand is supreme within their state and their facilities are almost always guaranteed to be top notch. I get that historically IU has been a bit more successful but OSU has done its fair share of winning both within the conference and on the national scene. If I were making a business decision between those two jobs I'd take the Ohio State job in a heartbeat.

I don't know if that's how Archie Miller thinks but if it's his dream job and it opened up just after he took the IU job I would bet there's some internal regret there that he would naturally never admit to.

You're messing with us right? Florida......hellllllooooo.

I'm not following...

Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer were the head basketball and football coaches at Florida when Florida won the football and basketball national championships in the same school year (2006-2007).

Well, since they have little coming back (and I haven't checked, I'm basing my wild-ass assumption on people leaving), I bet the new coach will somehow find some good recruits in his first 5 weeks. Plenty of PT - I think - I'm too lazy to really validate this.

Mom bought me a new couch for the basement ... and I fall asleep in it very easily.

As of right now, they have undersized PF Jae'Sean Tate (Sr.), CF Keita Bates-Diop (RS Jr.), SG Kam Williams (RS Sr.), PG C.J. Jackson (Jr. or Sr.?: might have been a sophomore JC transfer), C/PF Micah Potter (So.), CF Andre Wesson (So.), and little-used SG Jimmy Jent (Jr.) returning.

The incoming recruits that I know of are C Kaleb Wesson (Fr.) (Andre's younger brother?) and prep-school PG Braxton Beverly (Fr.). I'm not sure if they have gotten any commitments from incoming transfers.

crazy they let him go. Matta is a great coach. sure he's had a couple down years, but he brought winning back to OSU. B1G regular season and tourney titles, 2 final fours. he was pulling in upper level talent.

imo, a greedy administration. very doubtful the successor has anywhere near the success he had.

Don't count Dane Fife out either.

I will. He couldn't win at IPFW in 6 years (Tony Jasick and Jon Coffman did/have done a better job succeeding him there). How's he magically going to become a better coach at Ohio State?

If they hire someone like him as HC, that just means more wins for Purdue.

Maybe the Bulls HC, Fred Hoiberg, will be hired. He was great at Iowa State and the Bulls FO is a dumpster fire at this point

Dane Fife is going to be a very successful head coach somewhere. I think that the OSU job might be a bit of stretch right now, but he's going to get offered a good job pretty soon, I'm pretty sure.

Better job....HC at IPFW or Assistant HC at Michigan State

I've always hoped Fife would be the next coach at MSU after Izzo retires for those reasons. He is thought higher of than he should be IMO.
