My wife and I are in our late twenties and are considering making a trip out to West Lafayette for the game against y'all in mid-September.

We have a RT trip flight to Indianapolis on hold, as well as a rent car and hotel about 5 miles from campus in Lafayette. Now we're just trying to decide if we should commit and pull the trigger on purchasing our flight or if we should pass on this trip and use the money towards something else.

I love traveling to new places to see TCU play and I know a handful of people from Fort Worth that have siblings that attended Purdue and they all speak highly of the school and its campus, but we're starting to get cold feet at the thought of spending what will ultimately be a decent chunk of change for a match between two teams that may or may not be very good next year in a college town that we know pretty much nothing about.

If you were in my shoes, would you say it's worth making the trip out to West Lafayette from Texas for the weekend? If so, what are cool things to do while we are in town?

Thanks.

go to the Dog and Suds and Columbia Park. maybe try the frozen custard. Indianapolis has a nice zoo and children's museum.

But seriously.....

Indianapolis is less than 60 minutes away and offers a variety of things to do.

Lafayette has some very nice restaurants and micro breweries.. Purdue has one of the best public golf courses in the country.

the football game itself should be a very exciting one, as Purdue will have a Heisman hopeful and a wide open offense.

West Lafayette is very small compared to Ft. Worth or Dallas. There are many great places to eat and drink. If you were coming with a group or had friends up here, I would say yes. I feel the game will be great. TCU has been good recently, Purdue is rounding into shape. Purdue All American Rondale Moore is worth the price of admission and nobody in the Big 10 could stop him last year. I doubt anybody will stop him this year. If you are a die hard TCU fan, you might not win. People are friendly. I would save your money.

Hard to put ourselves in your shoes as we don't know anything about you or how long you plan to stay. However, remember that West Lafayette is a college town. As the post above said, Indianapolis is an hour away and there's plenty to do there. But as a college town, you shouldn't expect to have any touristy things to see apart from the campus itself, which is of course beautiful. Being a September game will only help that aspect. If you really like to travel to see TCU play, it's probably a no-brainer as you don't get road games in this area very often. But only you know if it's worth your $$.

Dallas/Ft. Worth is a massive expanse of a city. Indianapolis and West Lafayette are not that. Stuff to do and see. Very, very, inexpensive. Other than traveling to see your team, the campus, and do it monetarily very efficiently I don't see much to travel for. I stop at most colleges I can for games just to absorb the environment, but as a born and raised kid from Indianapplis...and Purdue. Nothing extra special. Just like after visting Dallas/Ft. Worth multiple times. Brisket and JFK....pretty much it other than the traffic.

And don't forget that Dallas also has America's Team the Cowboys...but WL has America's College Team the Boilermakers. Purdue is certainly well worth the trip!

If you come, make sure you'll have enough room for your tattoo when you're done;
Greatest. Weekend. EVER.

I’d say if it’s not too much of a strain on your budget do it. Should be a good game. Plus visiting new places is fun. Me and my son go to a road Cubs game every year. This year is at Houston. Maybe you can give me some tips on what to do there

As another poster said, road trips are usually fun. You’re with your girlfriend, it should be a good time. If you like beer and good food from a microbrewery, I’d recommend the LBC (Lafayette Brewing Company) which is the 2nd oldest micro in the State. If not, I’d recommend XXX which is a legit diner on the levee plaza. It was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The root beer has a Texas legacy still made in glass bottles and served in frosty mugs. It is only 1 of 2 places in the U.S. that serves your Texas made Root Beer recipe. The other loc is in the state of Washington. For fun, I recommend the peanut butter hamburger aka Duane Pervis All-American. There are many other food and beer places, those are my two favs.
Indy has more social nightlife, West Lafayette & Lafayette I’d recommend TripAdvisor and see what matches your likings.

It’s really hard to answer your question. If you’re a tcu maniac, then of course it’s worth it to see your team play. A fan doesn’t need any additional reasons other than the fact that his team is playing.

Football weekends go extremely fast for me....I’m never concerned about finding stuff to do. Especially if you’re flying in on Friday and out on Sunday.

If you’re really into cultural stuff and have extra time, I’d suggest flying into ORD and seeing Chicago, which is a world class city. It doesn’t sound like you want to drop more money on this weekend, but maybe The entire trip would be easier to sell to yourself if you could get excited about seeing Chicago.

To be honest, I'm not sure there's a lot to do in Indianapolis on a Purdue football weekend. the nightlife in Indy isn't any different than the Lafayette area - maybe a few more dance clubs. if you want to see Purdue memorabilia, Brunos is a nice restaurant. Lafayette has several micro breweries and pizza places. I would suspect you'd fly in on Friday and fly out on Sunday or Monday. Even if there was a lot of activities in Lafayette, you wouldn't have much time to take advantage of them.

I'd take in a restaurant Friday night. Maybe go to brunos or XXX Burger Drive in for lunch on Saturday. watch the game. Go to a restaurant Saturday night. Sleep in on Sunday and catch your flight back home.

if your plan was to spend more than just a weekend, I would echo the advice above. Rather than flying into Indianapolis, fly into Chicago and spend a couple of days there. the drive down from Chicago is about 90 minutes.

I take it you haven't been around in Indianapolis for awhile..

Wo...Wo is me. Man, Indy is a destination Wo. It's becoming tech savy, it's now a food destination, it's a sports center, great museums....World Class with one of the top two Airports in the US and maybe the world. You need to get out before declaring something not worthy.

Ok I don't drink, swear smoke or dance and I'm on a low sugar and low sodium diet.

I doubt he would go to a Pacers or colts game that weekend. I also doubt he would go to the speedway, zoo or children's museum. I also doubt he wants to go to a high school football game.

I doubt he wants to spend much of his weekend chilling at the airport.

We're talking about him facing some time constraints of a weekend and wanting to go to a Purdue game. So he basically has a single Friday night in September. Even the leaves in Brown county haven't turned yet.

Criticize me all you want. But when you do offer an actual specific alternative he can actually do rather than just heaping praise on Indianapolis. I guess he could go to Ruth Chris Steak House and there may be a play or concert Friday night. Or he could go to a Skyline Chili or White Castle!

Mass Ave. . . . Fountain Square . . . SoBro . . . Fletcher Place all good spots for a young couple on a Friday (or any other) evening looking for something to do in Indy.

TCU,
What do you like to do?

There have been food and entertainment suggestions but being your age there are a lot of things that can be done outdoors as well.

Parke County is about an hour south of Purdue.

They are the covered bridge capital of the world (so they say) with 31 covered bridges.

There are bike rides that you can take to see some or all of the bridges. Maps are available as well so you can tour in your car.

Turkey Run State Park is BEAUTIFUL with some of the most unique hiking trails around and a canoe/kayak trip on Sugar Creek is incredible.

I try to get down there every couple of years and it never gets old, even thought I am now.

I still believe his options to go to Indy are limited to take advantage of what it offers. Would you go to Indy on Saturday before or after the game? I doubt he has much time to spend there on Sunday. That is unless he decides to arrive on Thursday and depart on Monday.

White Castle. Now your talkin'. I love those sliders and could put a dozen down, but the one thing nobody can beat is Father Time! If I tried that now, I be in trouble. 5-6 are more than enough for me.
I'll finish with my "Steve Scheffler story". My roommate (Mike P) and I couldn't sleep one particular night during the week. We get a hankering for Sliders and Schleffer lived next door to us in Wiley Hall. He is heading down the hall past Midnight and we tell him we're going to Lafayette to get some Sliders. He had no knowledge of White Castle. We took him and he plowed down a dozen in no time and ordered 4 more for the road. We laughed and farted our way back to Wiley (windows down of course)!

If you have an extra day before or after the game, I'd give this two thumbs up. Turkey Run/Sugar Creek and Clements canoe company. I've canoed a lot of places in the U.S. Nothing and I mean nothing beats Sugar Creek canoeing between Shades State Park and Turkey Run. The cliff views, shell rock, covered bridges make this my #1 canoeing anywhere.

I think we need more info from our visitor. There are many things to do if he extended his stay.

I'm not somebody who grew up in Indiana. I like the popcorn. I went to Purdue for 5 years, and then left to see the world in 1979. I trust Indy has changed since then.

Feast of Hunters Moon October 5-6 Awesome event!!! Purdue is at Penn State that weekend. Sugar Creek is top notch canoeing in April May June then the water starts to dry up and by August and September you will be walking in ankle deep water having abandoned your canoe in the sand and gravel.

Scheff is one of the largest and nicest dudes I’ve ever had the chance to meet. Knew him from my days in undergrad. He played for the Seattle Supersonics when I lived in Seattle, too. Ryan Berning was the same - still is.

Talking out of your butt again?

No disrespect to you, but can you at least try to be respectful of others?

How about replying to the initial post rather than dissing other posters? I don't start these pissing contests, but I'm also not going to put up with them either!

Did I say anything that was untrue about Indy? And think about it. We're not talking about somebody who is going to move there. We're talking about somebody flying in and out for a weekend and spending the majority of his time at Lafayette! He's not going to have much time to enjoy the nightlife of Indy! And the Pacers aren't playing!

Rather than dissing me, why not be constructive and provide specific examples of things he can do? Or are you more interested in turning this thread into every single other thread you contribute to?

in other words, get off my back and stick to the subject. if you have nothing positive to contribute, then don't contribute.

My Grandpa was best buds in WW2 with a Gus Scheffler (Great Uncle to Steve I believe) They were P51 Mustang mechanics in England and apparently all their extra time was spent gambling. Said Scheffler and him were a good team as Grandpa was very good with the cards and Scheffler was Large enough to dissuade anyone from exacting revenge on the mechanic who was very good with the cards. Claims they sent home some pretty good money from it. Kind of obscure but you’re large Scheff comment made me think of it.

Tcumaniac,
Purdue has a nice campus in a town with a Midwest small town feel. There are quiet a few local favorites near campus for dining and drinking a few having been named on this thread. The Boilers are on the uptick after several horrid years and feature a wide open gambling offense. You can have an enjoyable relaxing football weekend in W Lafayette if that's what you're really looking for. As you can see simple requests for input on this site usually devolve into moronic dissertations. Good luck with your choice. I'd do it myself but I well understand making travel choices based on economics.

How had no one mentioned Breakfast Club yet?

Definitely swing by bars early morning of game day. Will see HUNDREDS of students in costumes at the bars which open early. Definitely recommend going in the bars too.

My advice to opponents is not to come. The weather is always windy and rainy. The water will give you the runs. There is nothing to do. And you will probably get assaulted.

I’ve got a Ronald Reagan /Steve Scheffler story as well. When President Reagan came to Purdue, my classes in KNOY Hall were cancelled for security and Reagan’s tour of Purdue. I headed to Mackey Arena and was near the ass end of a two block long line. Steve got thru his workouts and saw me in line. He was on his 10 speed bike. We discussed for awhile and as I got closer, he wanted my spot in line to see President Reagan and I’d take his bike back to Wiley Hall. The trade was 2 game tickets for my spot, but it could not be for the Fab Five as he was from MI and his parents would see that game. No IU either. I told him it had to be MI State then as they had Steve Smith and they were good as well. He hymned and hawed and we got to within 30 feet of Mackey Arena doors and they closed. He laughed said sorry. I was holding his bike at this point, security put their hands up to indicate hold for a second, then 3-5 minutes go by. They open the doors for another small group of people to go down in front of the podium! Steve and I shook hands on the MI State tickets and Steve took my spot! Next Winter, true to his word 2 tickets court side were waiting for Rodger and Mike P. Thanks you President Reagan for court side seats from Steve. True story!
