Interesting that he started at center for 5-5 scrimmages today. Played 15 minutes 5 rebounds 5 points. Played the least amount of all players that played (two didn't see any action). Game was televised on ESPN. There is another one tomorrow.

Also found it interesting that he measured 6' 8.5" IN SHOES. Shorter than Diamond Stone but his hand dwarf Stone's. Interesting medical stats here. His hands are huge relative to his height.

could still grow?

If I thought there was a chance I couldn't get drafted. There was a chance that the Suns are one of the two teams possibly to "maybe" draft me. And that I am projected 1st round pick the next year. What in the world could possibly make me not come back to school for a year?!?

How is he a projected 1st rounder next year? He could be but I haven't seen anything suggesting that.

He picked up 2 fouls in the first 90 seconds, which certainly had an impact on his playing time...the fact that he started says something no doubt.

He was solid on the boards (his greatest strength), and played fine offensively...perhaps the best thing for him was that he was not a liability on the defensive end at all.

He did not do anything to stand out at all admittedly, but he is also not playing at 100%, and it is not an event that showcases his genuine skills because of the style of play and so many guys focused on themselves.

Wow. Makes no sense to me that he could go completely undrafted this year but project as a first rounder next year. But the NBA is garbage so it doesn't surprise me much. Very little makes any sense.
Maybe a weak class of one and dones and/or international players?

I think that the idea of Draftexpess is to put a player only in a single mock draft. So if they think that Biggie is going to return to Purdue for the 16/17 season they insert him only in the 17 mock.

Just saw on Purdue basketball twitter account that Any Katz said that Swanni told him that he wants to stay in the draft but wants a team to tell him that they need him first. The fact that Swanni is so desperate to get to the NBA is crazy to me. I guess he really does need the money or he just doesn't like college or both idk. If I were a turnover machine with a horrific 3 pt shooting percentage, I would certainly come back. Regardless of how good of a rebounder I was. Seems like people are already projecting him as a lock 1st round pick next year anyway.
But the bottom line is if he isn't all in on Purdue next season then he should leave and not look back.

As much as I want to agree, I tend to think that with players like VE, Haas, Mathias coming back being leaders, he would not only be all-in, but have that motor to be as dominate as possible to not only raise his draft stock, but also contend for a ship.

Not only that but if he can help Purdue go deep into the Tourney it undoubtable will give him more and more press and exposure.

I will be more than happy to welcome him back if he respects his coaches and teammates and plays his butt off every game. If he comes back and is fully committed this season, all the draft talk is water under the bridge. If he wants to be part of the Purdue family for another year then I think we all will be happy to have him back.
I would love to have an extremely motivated and maybe even a little pissed off Swanni every game this year!

He's just projected assuming he improves a ton and has a great year. Obviously if he still has some major holes in his game, he won't be. Looking at NBA Draft projections for 2017 is a complete entertainment read right now.

I'm sure what has been used as motivation for his personal turnaround is "You can make it to the NBA someday". You have to keep in mind - college basketball players (not just Swanigan) absolutely dream of the NBA - it's why you see people jump the gun. They are dead set on it and can be in complete denial.

There was a survey done a year or two ago to college athletes about their feeling on making it pro. It was ABSURD the number of people who thought they'd make it to the NBA. Absurd. And the same went for football players making the NFL (which is very slightly more realistic).

I don't think Swanigan plays out of the team mindset. I think he plays very confidently obviously, but he's certainly not lazy. As long as that continues, no need to bring it up.

At least somebody watching the Combine (Chad Ford) thinks Biggie should head back to school, naming him to his All-Go-Back-To-School Team, along with: Melo Trimble, Nigel Hayes, Marcus Lee, Dedric Lawson, Troy Williams, Justin Jackson

No question you welcome him back. Not only I am expecting him to be greatly improved and more needed than last season, but punishing a player for testing his NBA readiness sends the wrong message to future recruits.

Watched two days of his scrimmages and he was really hustling to get down the court, was posting up well even though he was never thrown the ball, looked ok when he was outside but showed that he needs more work on his ball handling! Wonder how many European players not at the combine will mysteriously be drafted as they always are!

His vertical was pathetic and so was the lane drill. Too slow, not athletic enough (at least yet). If he was a knock down shooter, than those metrics don't mean as much........ But since he isn't (at least yet), no surprise Ford would put him on the "go back to school team".

+1

He is not ready yet and he may not be ready after next year either. He is not athletic enough to be successful in the NBA right now. I know they all want to get there, but sometimes patience is a virtue. Best wishes to him on whatever he decides....seems like a good young man.

Well, the info in GoldandBlack's Saturday update should surprise no one here...CS demonstrated that he has a lot of work to do and much to prove before he's ready for the league. IMHO, he's a much better fit for the college game than the pros. Hopefully somebody with some sense gets that point across in time.

Caleb Swanigan: The Purdue freshman had a very difficult time making his presence felt at the Combine, as he's undersized for the center position at 6'7 ½ barefoot, and lacks much in the way of explosiveness to compensate for that. He struggled badly trying to defend on the perimeter, and isn't skilled enough to play the power forward position full time yet. Unless he has his heart set on playing for his hometown Fort Wayne Mad Ants next year, returning to Purdue is certainly his best bet.

Hopefully that hits home with he and Barnes. He simply isn't ready and unless he either gets more athletic or develops a reliable outside shot, he never will be NBA material. I know Barnes was doing his best PR with the "his game is better suited for the NBA" but that is simply B.S. His game is not suited for the NBA at all at this point.

If he does come back to school, I hope his head is in the right place. He can be a huge asset or a huge problem.
