There's been discussion on here that Purdue being in West Lafayette is a big reason as to why Purdue has a hard time consistently recruiting top 60-75 players.

If this is true, how is UCONN able to get top-notch recruiting classes to Storrs, CT?

Location is an excuse. Do you really think 18-year olds are clamoring to live in Lawrence, Kansas? Spokane, Washington? Waco, Texas?

Storrs is further away from New York than Lafayette is from Chicago. It's not about location at all.

The other 4 National Championships they had won before this one go a long way im sure. Being the best historical school in a 5-6 state area doesn't hurt either.

Also, I don't really see where UCONN had "top notch classes". In fact, they were ranked behind us in 2022 recruiting wise. That's not really the game in college basketball. Of course you need to recruit well but so much of basketball is putting together a cohesive team with the best guys possible. Painter does a good job with this....it just hasn't turned into March success.

What Hurley has done is farm the transfer market for athletic pieces and be good enough to win in March (where they were banged up in conference this year and didn't win anything until the big tournament).

What people don't realize is that Painter has built a team that is good in the day to day....but not necessarily in the big games when matchups, strategy and "win or go home" are important. "Run the system" clearly doesn't work without athletic guards that can shoot and play D when it matters most. Painter can pivot here and be fine. Instead of taking a full class of the higher IQ but lower athleticism types he needs to balance it. He also needs to keep a bit more balance to the classes then there has been to make sure we have plenty of Purdue experienced SR. leaders when it comes to tournament play in March. We just havent had that lately. Some of that can be attributed to Edwards and Ivey leaving to the NBA and its why blue bloods like Duke and Kentucky HAVENT had much tournament success lately.

Purdue has won the last 2 pre-season tournaments and is 5-1 in the BTT. Definitely not good in the "big games".

2-3 over the last season in the tourney. I think most could agree we are better than that.

Look...i'm one of the few here thats not bagging on Painter. I don't want him fired. What I want....adjustments. I want to stop peaking in December. I want the team to get better as the year goes on....not worse. I want a little more athleticism. These guys are out there.....we need to start recruiting and landing more of them.

The peaking in Novemeber/December is odd, but made sense this year with our freshman guards just running out of gas. And Painter has admitted we need more quickness and is going after it in the portal.

I just don't get how we get thru Portland so easily but then can't handle FDU who we would pay 250k to come to Mackey and lose by 30.

I think the team the last two years tightened up due to the high ranking and added expectations.

Great tradition. UConn has won 5 natties since 1999. 2 more than any other school in that time frame.

And there was considerable cheating done building that tradition.

Two sides of the same coin perhaps, but it is hard for me to believe that Purdue peaked in December..although that is a real possibility. However, what if Purdue improved and didn't peak in December, but the improvment rate magnitude of Purdue was less than the opposition with both improving, but one improving much more. Which one is correct may suggest practice scheduling adjustments? I certainly don't know which is correct with my limited data... ;)

That's really the biggest issue for me; start fast and fizzle in February and March. I'd much rather have a 10+ game win streak at the end of the season than at the beginning.

As far as athletiscm, the wrong guy is transferring.

As far as getting better as year goes on....... here's a few adjustments.....
One, got to allow players to make mistakes & let them play through early season mistakes.
Two, got to bench Morton more, as he regressed as year went on, so if you want the opposite, let him sit by the coach.
Three, have, or utilize more, a guard dominant offense. Utilize athletiscm of TKR, Heide, Colvin & Smith.....of course when doing so coach has to be a bit more tolerant of mistakes frosh might make.

Location as an excuse for recruiting challenges is one of the weakest excuses out there.
WL is a nice college town. The weather, lack of beach, blah, blah, blah have nothing to do with anything.

Bball IQ? No such thing. Give me the athlete over the “high IQ” player every damn time.

Obviously Connecticut improved immensely as they blew a tire in their league much worse than Purdue ( 8 losses, 3 by double digits). Perhaps Painter might want to look up Hurley for a chat and some pointers.

Yes, or Hurley might want to look up Matt for a chat and ask for some pointers in how to prevent underachievement in mid year. ;) Still, my point is exactly that Purdue probably improved, but perhaps not as great as other teams from December on. How would Purdue fare at its best against UConn at its best....who knows?

You've never been to Connecticut?

Which explains your current coaching position!
And explains why every time Painter has to settle for a pale skin lowly recruited non-athlete, people like you claim "yeh, but he's got a high basketball IQ."

Does that mean everyone in the NBA has a high BB IQ?

If teams can play a different style and beat us in the tournament they would also do that during the regular season. I think for some reason we are much more fatigued at the end of the season than other teams. If we would have taken the week of the BTT off, limited practice and forfeit our first BTT game and not played it I think the NCAA tournament would have been very different for us.

Was it racist comments that got you a timeout?

"People like you claim" - wowza, you are one astute judge!
