From what I read he is a very solid hire, great recruiter, and seems to have no blemishes on his record. Does anyone know why he chose to leave Creighton for Purdue? If he was doing well there I don't know if the move makes sense. I suppose a larger salary is very likely, and Purdue is a better basketball school but nonetheless its mostly a lateral movement. Any insight? Lets hope he brings in great recruits. Welcome.

As an assistant to Painter, would he have the opportunity to assist coaching any of the USA teams? Painter is becoming a big part of our USA basketball program.

Better pay and a bigger stage for him to display his coaching ability. Creighton has become a solid program but they are not on par with Purdue.

They were better than the Boilers for a few years ('11-'12 through '13-'14) while Doug McDermott, Ethan Wragge, and company were there but I understand your point, cprh9u.

When I said lateral move, I also clarified that by saying better school, assumed better pay, but its not a huge move up is what I was alluding to. Creighton is a decent basketball program. I would have thought he would have made the jump to head coach rather than another assistant position as he seems like a stellar hire.

Agree with most of that. It appears to me that Lutz made this move to set up the next one. That is why I don't believe it to be a lateral move. All I am saying. Carry on.

So are we saying Lutz is a one and done coach?

Strictly my opinion. He will be at Purdue for at least 3 years before getting a HC call. He appears to be a "can't miss." I am surprised he didn't get the Dayton HC position. But I believe that if he were to be a long term assistant, he would have stayed at Creighton.

Well played, BBDog. If he makes good on all of his posted qualities at Purdue, your statement will be prophetic. Not only will it mean great things for PMBB, but he will be recognized outside of the program for those successes making him a very hot commodity. Usually for us, a new top level assistant has taken a year to achieve those successes. Let's hope he fast tracks this into immediate success as our fan base will be anticipating greater things than last season.

Typically an assistant coach has a special area of expertise . Such as defense or shooting or big men or guard play etc. they also have certain pipelines for recruiting! Some assistants are hired so that they can recruit their son (quonzo). Lutz is interesting! He recruited big man Epperson to Creighton so many say he has ties to big men and La alum. But he is now attracting guards from Texas. It would be interesting if Purdue signs the Texas PG and Texas SF named Hunter over all those previously Indiana high school ones.

What is or will be Lutz role and area of specialization?
