Is like Matt’s personal PR guy!! How great is that? Steve is extremely knowledgeable and speaks to Matt’s strengths. Of course the connection is obvious but he is a great asset. Boiler Up!
Steve obviously enjoyed his time at Purdue and respected what went on. He made Gene a fatherly figure while at ST. Johns and I know a student manager in the mid 80s that Steve would invite to the final fours with a free ticket. Steve's current job doesn't put him under the stress he was under coaching...something taking a toll on his health. Is like Matt’s personal PR guy!! How great is that? towards the end of Gene's coaching Purdue played UCLA when Steve was there and UCLA was much better and beat Purdue a bunch. Steve was somewhat apologetic after that game and you could tell he did what he needed to do, but was not happy with the winI wholeheartedly agree, Steve Lavin is a classic, and there are so many examples with him when it comes to his support of Purdue, and particularly Gene Keady. As TJ alludes to - and "Lav" has talked about it frequently of how much he appreciated Gene Keady giving him such an early opportunity and what he learned during his time as an assistant with the Purdue basketball program.
Love his exchanges with Matt Painter, as they usually bring in some experiences with CMP's playing time with Purdue during Lavin's time as an assistant with friendly "jabs" going back and forth. You get some laughs, some unusual insight, and some basketball philosophy all rolled into a few minutes......as "Lav" might put it....a "cornucopia of nuggets of basketball, life, and old-time memories and reminiscing...."
One time during a broadcast, they flashed a picture of him during a Purdue practice....and Steve Lavin instantly goes into his analysis with remarkable ease and recollection: Yes, we were working on......and "that's Steve Scheffler with the windshield wiper - brush/deny in the post! "
He definitely is paying it forward with his continuing positive reflections and comments.....yet he does it with his own style and subtlety, combined with a dash of "old school" reflections. On one telecast, I recall him mixing in "John Wooden, Piggy Lambert, Neil Armstrong, and Orville Redenbacher".....then went on about Dakota Mathias' game and abilities......and how that fit right in with what CMP was building....
Also......"Purdue Pete as the best mascot in the Big Ten."
Impressive indeed, and great to have another ambassador for Purdue basketball and beyond......but I digress.
Keep 'em coming, "Lav." Thank you, Steve Lavin!
