The network boys showed a comparison of IU and Purdue "wins" several times. Showing the surprising (to them) results that Purdue had a clear lead over IU in head-to-head wins. Then Dicky V spouts off about the second line that says... Get this.... IU has 5 "National Championships" to zero for Purdue.

Now if I recall correctly, 2 of the 5 IU "Championship's" were just NCAA tournament wins that went back to a 16 team playoff, and were NOT considered an NC. Furthermore, Purdue does have one NC awarded back in those days when the Helms trophy was considered the NC. The stats should have read 3 to 1. I will give IU credit for the 3. Kind'a pissed me off to see more fake news TIC.

Mathboy,

If you want to get hyper-technical, that graphic should have either read "NCAA" championships or 5-1 because the 1932 Helms Title might be recognized as a national championship. I've not read/heard anything that Indiana's 1940 and 1953 titles aren't considered.....granted it was a limited field.....8 and 22.

I thought it would have been a perfect segue for Dukie V to mention that so he could get into his shtick.

"Get this, Dave....do you know who led Purdue as an All-American to that Helms title? None other than Mr. John Wooden.....the Wizard of Westwood, Baby......an absolute maestro of the hardwood......the best of the best....even over the beloved Coach K...and I mean this....the mountain top.....the zenith......yes....the Master of Martinsville......that's right, Baby! He had Alcindor.....he had Walton......but it all started in West Lafayette, my paisan.....that's righhhhhht."

Now you have mixed apples and oranges. The two early IU titles were NCAA, but the NIT champion was considered the NC. The NCAA was the runner-up consolation tourney. It's either 3-1 NC, or it's 5-0 NCAA. The graphic said "National Championships". They were wrong.

I do like your closing though! Made me smile.

1940 was interesting.
the varying stories of indiana playing in the ncaa rather than Purdue.
and then Nit champ Colorado lost in the first round of the ncaa tourney!

CCNY is the only team to win both in the same year iirc.

The NIT was the premier tournament until the late 1950s. It lost that because of a scandal involving a number of NYC area teams.
