1. Glad Etling is gone. He was just terrible in the game. 2 UGLY picks. Tons of ball handling mistakes. With pressure in his face he makes A throw, and its rarely THE throw. Kid jut doesn't have IT...and I think he HAD the most potential of the QBs on the roster. Nice kid, wish him luck but he was just noise in the competition.
2. Outside of 1 high, short throw that was picked Blough was pretty good, especially for a RS Freshman. Not the best arm. That said, great vision, field awareness and reminds me of Drew Brees as a runner. Makes plays with his feet and uses that mobility in the pocket to extend plays and make big throws once guys are open on their secondary routes/scrambles. He is my pick to be the QB. Probably won't win the starting job as Shoop is stubborn as F&$%, but eventually he'll be the starter.
3. Appleby is ok. Confident running the offense. Doesn't always make the right decision. Telegraphs his throws. Best when hitting WRs short and in stride. Could be successful. Don't think it's in Shoops offense though.
4. Shoop.....yeah, he's our absolute #1 biggest problem. Personnel selection was beyond abysmal in this game. I know you want to give guys reps....but after 2 drives with the white team in the 2nd half it was clear to me that Etling should have had his butt firmly glued to the bench and your young RS FR QB who needs reps and experience live should have been in there.
5. I think Green will be our best RB in A LONG time. He's a 15 touch guy a game, but he hits the hole so hard and can rattle off moderate chunks of yards pretty easy. He did great against our pretty good LBs. Our OL will get him holes. He WILL find them and do well for us. A great compliment to Knox. I think Knox needs to realize he needs to run away from the contact. Once he does, he'll be good for us too.
6. LBs looked good. Secondary was better than I thought it would be. DL will look better when the 1st and 2nd teams can platoon together.

This team goes as far as the offense does. We can flounder and be really bad, or find what works and who works at QB and flirt with 7 wins.

Just my opinion.

Nice write-up. I don't put too much credit into the spring game for evaluations - but from what I saw over the past two seasons, I agree with your assessment of Etling and Appleby.

On your notes about Shoop. One thing that bothers me is that in two years, we still don't have an idea on what type of offensive identity Shoop (or Hazel) are going for. I hear run, run, run, but then we run spread option which wasn't the strength of any of our QBs.

The biggest issue I had with Hope's tenure is that once things went bad (injuries) Hope began coaching out of fear of going through that again. They made an emergency change to the offense to allow Henry to start late in the year and then suddenly that was the offense of the future even though the other 3 QBs couldn't run it well.

I'm sensing some of that from this coaching staff. I hope year 3 is when they feel comfortable to run the offense and defensive systems they want to run. Enough of the the "hybrid" this and "hybrid" that. Run either 3-4 or 4-3 base defense and then pick a base (pro-style, spread, west coast, etc.) offense and go.

Even with a defined base-system, you can make adjustments to take advantage of the talent on the roster. But pick something!

The way Purdue plays its spring game, it's tough to get many real evaluations, according to the coaches, because there isn't 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc. It's by a draft that's just a hodge-podge of guys that often can lead to really, really bad matchups. Like a first-team end against a third-team tackle, which puts tons of pressure on a first-string quarterback, for example. Also, coaches limit the type of defenses that are run and have certain sections of the game that limit the offense from certain formations/plays. (Like, tight end Cole Herdman is going to play an entire series but will be detached the entire time ...)

The biggest single-day evaluation this staff uses is the jersey scrimmage, which pits best against best, which truly is the most accurate evaluation of talent, IMO. (The jersey scrimmage this fall is Aug. 22.)

I also like Keyante Green, but don't be surprised if he's No. 3 on the RB depth chart at some point this season behind Knox and Jones. Interesting "battle" to watch this camp.

This would be a huge mistake IMO. Green is not a home run hitter by any means, but he is the best at hitting the hole and is the toughest to take town. When we need to sustain possessions, this guy needs to be in the game.

I like Green, but he isnt Hazell's guy. Tough runner, but i wouldnt expect him to get many carries unfortunately.

Hazell would probably argue with you about best at hitting the hole and toughest to take down (in favor of Knox).

Keyante needs to get at least 50% of the carries this year. he showed lots of potential and needed to play more last season.
