Guy can flat out coach. Michigan HS coach for years (195-41), then went to Grad Rapids CC and won JC championships (30-4) before the CC abandoned the program. Then he went to D2 Ferris State where he has gone 7-4, 8-3, and now back to back 11-0. (That is progress!) He interviewed last year at CMU and did not get the job. Ideally I would like to see him at the D1 level and how he does but he clearly can recruit to the level he is at and his offenses are just outstanding. He will get a shot somewhere and I don't want to miss the train on this guy. When you are in the game for 20 some years and win 80% of the time you get it.

The pro with Purdue is that you cannot do any worse than we have done. I think this his offense is innovative enough to work, almost on a Tillerian level, that would get people excited about our program. I don't think he would leave his gig to be a lame duck OC either. We have nothing to lose.

Just curious, what do you consider "on the cheap"?

Secondly, I wonder how Purdue should go about determining what it pays for the next coach.... should the AD determine the max that can be afforded, float it out there so-to-speak, and see what kind of candidates it attracts? Or should the AD solicit candidates and then determine a salary based on what they've made historically (+ a bump of course)? It sounds like you view it more the latter, but I think my view is closer to the former. Not suggesting Purdue should go poor doing it, but I do think it's important to determine what the max dollar is if the AD has his choice of coaches (hypothetically speaking).

Cheap? In simple terms "less than Hazell" but a dollar figure? I would say $1.25-$1.75 million. Figure it would be a ton more dough than the D2, more than a MAC school, but less than the rest of the Big Ten.

Maybe include enough jack to hire a truly competent, innovative staff of fearless recruiters and offensive/defensive minds.

Dream big baby!

This is it. It's the reason we got of Hope. He was destined for mediocrity. We weren't ready to settle for that but we have leadership unable to lead for excellence.
The are 2 types of buyers: Price buyers and those pursuing excellence and are willing to pay up to achieve it. We are mired in the first category. Those seeking the value proposition. These are the survivors. Unable or unwilling to make a commitment for greatness. And then there are those that insist on excelling in every endeavor in which they participate. That's where we need to be without compromise. Compromise rewards poor results which is where we currently reside.
