Teleconference just concluded.

• Painter said Kendall Stephens was 'fine' the other day but just didn't play well and Mathias was solid and making good decisions so they stuck with him. Might just be coachspeak but FYI.

• If you listened to the radio show last night and now this teleconference it is pretty evident Painter is trying to light a fire under his big guys for this game (and every game). They have to rebound better, for one thing.

"Our big guys have got to play harder and they've got to play smarter," Painter said. "They just do."

• The turnovers have been cut the past two games, but the rebounding he has gone sideways. Painter said the elusive goal has been to get both in line at once.

He said that if Purdue had played well for 40 minutes every time out and still been 4-3 in the Big Ten, he'd view that as his team's "ceiling" but said he still sees enough room for improvement to believe that they can be a lot better than they are.

• Paraphrasing: Basil Smotherman's big game against Iowa doesn't change much for him if he's not productive against Indiana.

• Painter has been really impressed with Collin Hartman's defense at the 5 for IU in how he's battled other team's big men. Painter said IU is better with him in there than Perea.

We'll have a ton of other stuff later.
