Some love from Gary Parrish

I know it was on the road, and because of that, I didn't expect to win, but I really hope that Louisville team which we saw isn't better than Purdue.

They are. We were beaten pretty thoroughly throughout that game.

I was at that game, surrounded by knowledgeable UofL fans. Without exception they thought they played way over their heads in the 1H, while Purdue's best shooters were going an uncharacteristic 0-fer. By the end of the game they were unanimous in the opinion that Purdue is a very good team, and they definitely would not want to meet us again on a neutral court in the NCAAs.

Parrish is right. We might not quite be on a par with #1 Villanova, but we are probably at least the equal of top ten Louisville if we played them again.

this article illustrates why no one should take these polls that seriously. pollsters rarely watch all of these games and they simply see a result, then vote on gut feel. all it takes is a small minority of pollsters to make the same assumptions and teams drop or rise accordingly.

we have a very good team this year that - when on - is capable of beating most teams in the country on a given night. we have a lot of players and skill sets that many others would love to have on their team and our team plays within itself and to its strengths for the most part. are we perfect? far from it.

let's enjoy the process and the season.

Purdue has yet to see how good they can be. Hope Painter gets them to their best in March and not February like I have seen in the past. They are now a top 25 team IMO. As CE gels with the team, and they all learn ball security, learn team D, I think they could maybe be a top 10 team someday?? Regardless, Purdue is beatable on any given night.

Purdue started out 15th and now are 6-2 and 18th. I would think that is fair and the 2 losses are somewhat a wash. Actually I believe UL and Vill together have only played 3 teams ranked and Purdue is the only win(s). UL lost to Baylor and Vill only ranked team was Purdue. I think Purdue has a good team and figuring out who and how to play easily could of turned 2 close losses into an 8-0 team in the top 5.

I agree. Ball security has been an issue the last few seasons and I was expecting some improvement this season with more experience by, well, everyone. Still an issue. I hope it gets better, but I fear we are what we are.

I guess my point is we are ranked fairly based on who we have beaten. Maybe some individuals are jerks just because and rank us too low, but collectively we are the 2nd highest team with 2 losses. The highest ranked team with 2 losses is Wisky, 1 spot ahead of us, who lost to 2 top 10 teams (Creighton and UNC) and has a win against Cuse which isn't great but is quite a bit better than our "best" win. I just don't see it as an injustice where we are ranked. I think we are a top 25 team, but it's not like we've made such a strong case that no reasonable person could consider us outside of the top 25 at this point in the season. I don't think we've beaten a top 100 Kenpom opponent. Looks like our next chance is ND.

Agreed. Not going to get upset by a few spots in the polls this early in the season. Plenty of opportunities ahead. At this point last year Oregon was unranked and went on to a #1 seed.

For the record, ASU is 88th in Kenpom right now. Don't know if they will drop out of the top 100 if they lose though.

fair points, IMO.

The injustice is the three voters leaving us off their ballots all together. The overall ranking is probably about right.

The difference being that last season the committee valued the PAC 12 as a whole. I don't believe the B1G is strong enough this season to boost Purdue to #1 seed. The B1G and Purdue would have to finish the noncon strong for that to happen. I can see Purdue getting a top 4 seed come selection Sunday.

Spot on. Purdue's best win is against Ken Pom #106 Auburn. That is IPFW (Fort Wayne) territory. They could get their first top 100 win tonight of course though (#88 AZSU). That is why they aren't getting more love.

My point was that rankings this early in the season are flawed guesses based on limited data points. Not gonna worry about moving 2-3 spots. As the season plays out and by tourney time there will be an entire body of work from which to judge.

Purdue has zero chance of being a #1 seed on Selection Sunday given their lack of non conference wins.

Not true at all. They could win the B1G with only 1-2 conference loss and finish with 3-4 total losses and grab a #1 seed. The B1G is down a bit, but if you blow the league up like that, you could grab a 1 seed. Not likely, but pretty stupid to say "zero chance".

I don't get too worked up over rankings.........but I do think they matter. If nothing else it creates a mindset. The NCAA knows what it is doing, and they will have their match ups come tourney time.

The turnover issues over the last 3 or 4 seasons is partly because Purdue has been more post-oriented ever since A.J. Hammons showed up on the scene. That doesn't explain away everything but that's big part of it: Purdue has literally been #1 out of 351 teams in DI (last season and maybe the season before that as well) in number of post entries/entry passes into the paint per game. Last season they had 221 more post entries than the #2 team in that category. If a team is working the ball into the post that often, a fair amount of turnovers will occur.

Lots,of teams have zero chance based on what you are saying. Significant wins are offset by bad losses particularly when those wins are at home.
