Although I'm increasingly less and less a fan of ESPN's "journalism," I thought some of you might find this interesting.....and decided to post it separately than in some of the transfer/recruiting threads.

Some interesting quotes in the article from coaches Collins, Miles, and Crean. Tom Izzo was mentioned as describing the situation (throughout college BBall, nationally) as an "epidemic."

I can see the concern as the number continue to grow, but as the landscape (including recruiting) continues to get more and more competitive.....this is not really surprising, is it?

I think it's BS that the head coaches are reported to all agree on transfers (of any kind) sitting out a year. Purdue and CMP have really benefitted from the grad transfers with Octeus and (whether or not people are still upset about some of his crucial turnovers) Hill strengthened the team's depth on the whole last season (and shot FT's at a better clip than expected) and now they have Albrecht from Michigan, lol.

I side with the players because I will always agree that if a head coach can decide to leave a school anytime they want when things are going well, I think players should have the same freedom (good situation or not), especially if they have graduated with eligibility remaining.

I assume Izzo is, as per usual, taking a principled stand on this and not accepting any grad transfers?

Yep, no Brandon Wood from Valpo as a grad transfer, no Bryn Forbes being immediately-eligible as a junior due to a hardship waiver, and no grad transfer PF's named Ben Carter from UNLV for this upcoming season.

I don't like the sit-out-a-year if you transfer rule. It hurts the players who may have real reasons to leave their original school. I see 2 benefits from the rule, so I understand why the coaches keep it.

Fisrt, I can see is that the rule may control some of the less principled coaches. Some coaches would continue to recruit players on other teams if this rule were removed. Sure this sort of poaching could go on now, but the sit-out-a-year rule discourages it just a little.

Second, I think some players would switch schools too capriciously. They get into an argument with the coach - they leave, rather than reconcile and work out their issues. They don't start? - they leave for a school that will let them start. I ould see this being a big "shop aroound" for kids at the end of each year. Sort of a scamble/free agency deal for 17-year olds. Ugh! iT could make a mess out of college basketball as we know it.
