to Vince at the top of the key were he was able to make the pass to Haas for a dunk. They never tried it again. SIE played a 1-2-2 a "few" possession and when they gave Purdue the look the first time...Grady slipped down through the hole in the middle to receive a pass from Nojel for his first two and towards the end of the first half..seconds remaining I beleive SIE played a Box and 1 with the chaser on Carsen. I think Purdue scored, but it was not Carsen. Now what I don't know was whether that was on purpose or accident? SIE played 95% man so was this a mix up by the players thinking they were in the 1-2-2 and the top guy thought they were playing man and followed Carsen while the others thought they were suppose to be in zone or did they all know they were in a junk defense on purpose? If anyone can recall...Carsen cut down the left side of the lane and headed to the right though the lane (moving away from SIE's bench) with the chaser on him.

I'm leaning to this being on purpose thinking Purdue would try to get the ball in his hands in what I'm thinking were the final few seconds of the first half. I wish this was taped so I could see this again. There as a set that was interesting that I would like to see as well that SIE used in the second half and maybe it was Ewing that was on D...getting old is tough to remember all this after sleeping... ;) SIE was kinda in a FT line extended not a pure 1-4 high, but staggered a bit and I think it was Ewing's guy that went right to left for a rub opposite on FT extended and Ewing afraid he would go for the three went on top of the screen away from the ball (used to be a big no-no before the 3 on screens away from the ball at that location generally) and the guy read Ewing going on top and quickly cut to the basket with everyone all up high and NOW Ewing was trailing as his guy received the pass for an easy score. It may not have been Ewing, but it was someone that was not the returning 6.

Still, it appears Purdue plays too individual early and not quite the intensity as later on D...and I know they are feeling them out. Playing "faster" nessitates playing more individual than slower adn being the senile old man herre...I really like to see some head hunting...just a bit more...

Tom,
Were you there? We will have to get together again now that we can have a beer together in Mackey.
I noticed when SIU set the press up, there was some discreet signals by the Boilers on the court to run that play that they had obviously prepped for. They were all congratulating each other afterward for running it to perfection.

Yawn, TJ. How many times did we turn it over against the press last year? 2? Old news. It was the best play when they passed it up to Haas for the dunk. Those were senior passes.

OTOH I expect our "secret scrimmage" opponent to drop dramatically in the rankings after last night's game.

yeah, I'm in 118...half way up. Left 111 a couple of years ago. I lost some weight to help my blood sugar (lighter than I have been for some time) and have a couple of weeks before carbs and alcohol.) I try to get there 30-45 minutes before game time and so down the road we can do that...

I'm more used to teams flashing someone inside the 1-2-2 around half court and then hitting opposite, but once Purdue made the pass to Carsen??? (across the court from the scorers bench he just blew by teh D and found Vince deep enough that he was an immediate threat who passed to Haas for the dunk.

Well since you are a newbie here you many not realize all the angst concerning the press three years ago ... B.C. (before Carsen) I think it was Carsen opposite of the scorers bench and if it was...it was primarily his speed rather than a senior pass that put it in that position...not to take anything away from the seniors.

Assuming you were there, do you have an opinion on the box and 1? Was it on purpose or an accident? Was a 1-2-2 half court zone the D you thought you would see against Purdue or did you expect something different and yet not straight up man?

You said it right there. 3 years ago. I didn't sweat once against a press last year. Most of our turnovers were Caleb and Carsen forcing things on our half of the court. Teams will try anything to stop us. Our size is massive and we've got 4 or 5 guys in the top 10 in history in assist to turnover ratio. Imagine how frustrating that is to defend.

I don't think anyone sweats a press this year OR last year...primarily because Carsen gives them foot speed...the other players already had everything else. Still, it was a solid enough effort against the press that the SIE coach never tired it again...
