to Vince at the top of the key were he was able to make the pass to Haas for a dunk. They never tried it again. SIE played a 1-2-2 a "few" possession and when they gave Purdue the look the first time...Grady slipped down through the hole in the middle to receive a pass from Nojel for his first two and towards the end of the first half..seconds remaining I beleive SIE played a Box and 1 with the chaser on Carsen. I think Purdue scored, but it was not Carsen. Now what I don't know was whether that was on purpose or accident? SIE played 95% man so was this a mix up by the players thinking they were in the 1-2-2 and the top guy thought they were playing man and followed Carsen while the others thought they were suppose to be in zone or did they all know they were in a junk defense on purpose? If anyone can recall...Carsen cut down the left side of the lane and headed to the right though the lane (moving away from SIE's bench) with the chaser on him.
I'm leaning to this being on purpose thinking Purdue would try to get the ball in his hands in what I'm thinking were the final few seconds of the first half. I wish this was taped so I could see this again. There as a set that was interesting that I would like to see as well that SIE used in the second half and maybe it was Ewing that was on D...getting old is tough to remember all this after sleeping...
SIE was kinda in a FT line extended not a pure 1-4 high, but staggered a bit and I think it was Ewing's guy that went right to left for a rub opposite on FT extended and Ewing afraid he would go for the three went on top of the screen away from the ball (used to be a big no-no before the 3 on screens away from the ball at that location generally) and the guy read Ewing going on top and quickly cut to the basket with everyone all up high and NOW Ewing was trailing as his guy received the pass for an easy score. It may not have been Ewing, but it was someone that was not the returning 6.
Still, it appears Purdue plays too individual early and not quite the intensity as later on D...and I know they are feeling them out. Playing "faster" nessitates playing more individual than slower adn being the senile old man herre...I really like to see some head hunting...just a bit more...
