Shirts for game tonight

I saw that too.
The unis aren't green are they?

This reminds me of Marcus Green's final home game.

I took a couple of my dughters to it and they asked me why the students were wearing green.

It actually took me a few to think about it until it dawned on me it was his final game at Mackey.

Are they green because they are thanking MSU for losing so much?

Edit: Looking at one of the pictures more closely, it looks like there is a cancer ribbon in one them, could it be for Lymphoma cancer? Is that what the Butler player Andrew Smith had that recently passed?

I wish the white shirts were black. The green ribbon would stand out more and people who refuse to wear theme shirts might have black on anyway.

I'm not sure who is in charge of coming up with these designs.

But a couple things...

1. The students will actually wear their shirts. So put the "fancy design" of the ribbon in the student section. They will also be packed in and standing, which will make it more obvious.

2. Why can't we use Purdue colors? Why neon green? The shirts in the promo pic look yellow, these are straight up green. And also, this is a national TV game. Nobody will understand the meaning of white and neon green - it will just look weird. Guarantee I'll get texts from people asking what people are wearing neon green for.

Sorry I'm a debbie downer here, but if you're gonna do something like this, at least use Purdue colors - even if it's just a normal yellow vs. gold.

You think someone will pull a Kramer and not wear the ribbon-shirt?

That lime green is typically for lymphoma. Isn't that what Andrew Smith from Butler just lost his life to? Maybe it's a nod to him?

I'm sure the commentators will talk about the shirts on more than one occasion.

Nothing to do with it. Purdue chose to use this neon green color a couple years ago. Our football team has had uniforms with it in there. Not sure why we need neon green. Just use a standard yellow if you want something bright/off-color.

Nothing about this looks "Purdue"...

I would have plotted the neon t shirts only be worn on the opposing teams basket side. Students could bring their black shirts too and wear them when Purdue is on their end.

Don't you understand it's cool and will lead to 5 star recruits flocking to Purdue much like the gimmick unis have done for the FB team?

I think it's probably mostly Nike pushing it.
Volt - their accent color of choice recent years (even us soccer, for some reason)

Being a father of a cancer survivor, this is a common color for cancer awareness. The bright yellow/neon green is the color we have for my sons cancer and proudly worn by our friends, family and also Purdue players on their wrist if you pay close attention in some publicity shots. I honestly thought it was cool to see tonight, I do agree black shirts, with the neon would have looked better though. Seeing the school and team support such a good cause makes me proud to be a Boiler and a father of a cancer survivor.

I've got to be honest...the shirts looked like straight dog shit on TV. I spent the entire game squinting to try and read any single one of the shirts. I could not make out a word, a logo or any kind of image on the shirt. The green with our gold looked horrendous, there was a green reflection on the floor on low angle shots and too much organic black in our crowd lessened the effect of the white shirts.

I applaud the sentiment, but this made us look bad on TV.

You must be color blind like me. I couldn't read the words on my own shirt, ha. Still, a good cause and such a minor effort to put them on when they are laying on the seat. Disappointed so many did not.

Looks like they will add some green to their uniforms:

My wife asked me why the guy with the big hair (Biggie) wasn't wearing the neon socks like the rest of the team...any idea why? Seems like a little thing, but if everyone else wore them to "Hammer Down Cancer", why couldn't he too...doesn't seem very team-oriented (at least that was her opinion)

Hammons & Vince weren't wearing the socks either (at least that's what it looked like on my screen).

edit to add: I'm not trying to knock AJH & Vince for not wearing the socks either. Just trying to point out Biggie wasn't the only one. Could be plenty of reasons including taping ankles, etc. Not a big deal.

I never fail to be amazed by the people who bitch about something that is A) for a very good cause and B) so trivial.

While it is "in the weeds", I just think it's a missed opportunity for Purdue's overall brand.

I could have told you the white t-shirts were going to look bad (I made a post saying such prior to the game). It looked bad on TV.

If you're going to give out a t-shirt to every person in the arena to wear - and if you're going to go for some color scheme/design with it - it has to be something people want to wear. Highlighter green is not something desirable to most people - the kids will wear it, they'll wear anything, which is why I said I would have put the "ribbon" part of the design in the student section so it would actually be clear.

Secondly, for a school that struggles with brand awareness and colors over the years, putting highlighter green as a prominent thing is probably not the greatest idea. Do you see other schools with great branding divert from their colors? Not really (there's probably a reason they have great branding!)

If you wanted something that wasn't totally official Purdue colors, give the students a standard yellow ('canary' if you will) and give the rest of the fans black and people will wear it.

Last thing I'll say is that this was a prime exposure for Purdue. Being on ESPN on 9 pm on a Thursday night is probably going to be one of our highest viewed game of the year. This game has also been used by Purdue as their "picture of Mackey Arena" in the past couple years because everyone is wearing Purdue colors, well not this year!

I'm not saying Purdue shouldn't do something for a cause, even if it's just awareness. But you couldn't read any of the shirts from TV (highlighter green on white does not stand out - and white on highlighter green also does not stand out). Highlighter green isn't some well known cancer awareness color (is it used in other cases? Sure, but it's not something people know - like pink for breast cancer).

Why not add 2 decals, like the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, with a "Hammer Down Cancer" logo on there on the court? Then when you're sitting there watching the game - hey it adds up.

I love that Purdue has a campaign like this and Purdue is fairly unique in their cancer research. I'm simply saying I think it can be a LOT better and a LOT more effective.

1) Can't add decals -- NCAA forbids it now.
2) It was the Hammer Down Cancer game... If anyone did any research, here is why that color was chosen:
The t-shirts are either white or volt and are in support of the Purdue Center for Cancer Research. The volt color honors cancer survivors and is inclusive of all cancer survivors.

Since 1978, the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research has been a National Cancer Institute-designated basic-research cancer center. Only seven institutions in the United States have earned this title. Being a basic-research center means it doesn't treat cancer patients directly. Their work focuses on investigating cancers where they begin - at the cellular level - to investigate the cause of, and cure for, one of the most devastating killers of our time. Doctors and scientists throughout the world use their discoveries to develop methods, medicines and medical devices to save and enhance patient lives.

3) I don't think the shirts were really meant to be "read."
4) The highlighter green was in the student sections. I will say that 100 percent of the students there wore the T-Shirts.
5) If its too much issue wearing a T-shirt (a WHITE one, by the way), I am guessing the athletic dept. may not do this last night. I thought the green looked awesome. The white, which should have looked awesome, was meh...

As much as I love seeing the Old Gold and/or Black throughout Mackey, I am at least as happy that non-Boiler fans are made clearly aware of the research center designation and the value that Purdue and a Purdue education have in the real world.

Agreed.

I was there last night and then watched the game on the DVR this morning. It was nice to hear Jim and Rece talk about the cancer research being done at PU. Jim being a cancer survivor added to the importance for him I'm sure.

I'm not going to argue about how it "looked" on TV or in person. I'm just glad we sometimes do something just because it is a good thing to do. If in some wild universe this hurt our "image" or "brand" because it looked bad on TV then as a proud PU Alum I'm ok with that.

Thank you for stating this. I was going to mention the same thing but you beat me to it. If you ever watch some of the warm ups, the nongame film in the pep up videos, you will see AJ, and Vince wearing the neon bracelets. I am proud to say those bracelets have my son's name on them, these players bring a tear to my wife's eye every time she see's these young men supporting a child they barely know.

1. Ok, what about the digital advertising board that spans half of the court? Or anywhere else?

2. I understand WHY the color was what it was. I think it's silly that "highlighter" is chosen as the color. I understand what the Purdue Cancer Research Center is. Doesn't mean it's a good idea to pick THAT color. You yourself called it green - again, why would you brand something "Purdue" to be highlighter green. It doesn't make sense.

3. Again, if I watched on TV, I had NO clue what the t-shirts were for. Not saying you were supposed to read it when in your traditional TV shot, but every time they showed the crowd you could squint all you want and still not be able to read the t-shirt. The announcers mentioned it 1 time in 2 hours. So the hundreds of thousands watching on TV didn't have a clue what was going on - except if they caught the 20 seconds of it in the second half. If you're going to pick one of our games with the biggest TV audiences, then they should factor that into what they do to make sure it does get the message across.

4. I already said that the students wear whatever you give them. I simply said that the ribbon design should have BEEN in the student section because it would actually show up because the students wear the t-shirts.

Don't think you'd find too many respective brand experts that would say this was a great success.

Again, it's constructive criticism. Last year, I loved the black and gold shirts - it was the first time I thought Mackey really stood out as Purdue - black and gold! My one constructive criticism was that the design was a bit too complex to really tell what was going on. Looked cool when the t-shirts were sitting on the seats, but it became very hodge podge when the regular fans put them on.

I'm not questioning the cause. I simply think it could be more "Purdue" and also promoted better. I had people ask what was with the green when we wore the football uniforms, I had people ask last night, etc. - and these are Purdue fans.

Thanks for pointing that out 02. Could be she happened to walk in when Haas was in for Hammons and Vince was on the bench too. I didn't pay much attention to it, but you know how women can really pick up on how guys dress sometimes...lol.
