watching the tournament I saw 2 instances where a coach switched to a zone and it got their team back in it. Last night Princeton switched and it threw off Creighton's O. During a 10 min stretch in the 2nd half , Creighton was held to 10 points and it got Princeton back in striking distance. Kennesaw St switched to a zone and it got them close to Xavier and a chance to win. Now those 2 teams didn't win but it shows a coach using a different method to help his team and players out.

You can try to win a game by wishing your 3 point shooting % will miraculously improve from the last 15-20 games, or, you can try to make up the 5 points you lost by, by making adjustments and playing better/different defense. A team can win and lose games either way. It doesn’t have to be all about the missed 3 point shots, imo.

Great point. If what you are doing isn't working, try something else! IMO, they should have pressed the pace against FDU.

Totally agree. But we need to be longer and quicker to play any sort of effective zone.

Agreed. But defense was not the reason Purdue lost.

We’d have given up under 60 had it not been for the intentional fouls at the end of the game. You should win EVERY game you keep your opponents under that mark.

The key was simple….when we broke the press we should have attacked. It was the only time there weren’t 3 guys on Edey AND we had them in the bonus with like 12 minutes left and double bonus with 8 minutes left. We didn’t force them into another foul for 4 minutes and that might have been the last one of the night for FDU.

When we attacked after the press break we drew fouls and got them out of position. We even jumped out to a 5 point lead after getting Zach the ball a few times.

But after we were successful, Painter had Smith stop after breaking the press and let the defense get set up. Huge tactical error. What, were we going to turn the ball over MORE than we had already? Clank more wide open 3s after running uncontested action? We press the action at all in the last 8 minutes, we win.

This happens a lot. It's just if you watch the B1G you aren't going to see it very often. It's why I get so frustrated with posters on here that say playing a zone has no impact, or MTM is the only defense to play. They obviously don't watch other conferences. CMP famously said "The B1G is a MTM league". Congratulations, you are now 23 years and counting without a champion. Just keep doing what you do B1G, it's obviously working......

wonder if the way FAU breaks a press w/ that 5 man across the line and sprint will catch on, looked to be an effective way

They broke the press and then had Zach and his guy camped out of front of the basket.

we lost because of our O, but when the O is off try something different on D to shut the other team down or just to interrupt their O.
But fixing the O should be top priority. Defense is down on the list, and should improve with the freshmen becoming stronger and smarter. I can't think of a single game that Purdue lost this year because the other team ran them out of the gym. In every game that was lost, shooting was abysmal. One poster here would regularly point out when Purdue couldn't score 30 points in a half. It's a mystery to me. The entire team went into a slump. No one could break out. And I don't buy the notion that Purdue needs to get better shooters. Some of these guys were recruited for their proven shooting skills.

I seriously think our Freshman backcourt ran out of gas. Painter ran them in the dirt. No way would I give up on Smith or Loyer. Stamina should improve next year. A lot.

That was my point. It was the only time Zach was 1 on 1. We’d break the press and they’d immediately collapse on Edey, let us run our motion and either get no shot…or a wide open 3 we would miss. A good coach would’ve noticed and adjusted.

When we forced it to Edey in single coverage off a press break we had success. Then, just for whatever reason stopped doing it.

The press wasn’t our biggest issue this year, it was more what we did or didn’t do after we broke it that was reason for concern.
