Always interesting to see scout teams - who's on them and (maybe more importantly) who's not - because it's generally an indication of who is in Purdue's plans.

The defense was interesting, particularly the freshmen: Alex Criddle and Anthony Watts were with the varsity defense, while Lorenzo Neal was on the scout D. Criddle's made a move recently, even getting some second-team snaps. Surprised. Maybe an understatement. He doesn't move as well as the others, it doesn't seem, but maybe has a better grasp of what Purdue wants. He's a pretty smart guy.

Also ... sophomore Keiwan Jones was on the scout defense. You might recall that he had been a starter for a couple practices in the first week of camp. Now on the scout team. Not sure what happened.

Varsity defense can be a sign too (although not a guarantee) that a rookie will play. Notable that cornerback Josh Hayes worked with the varsity, getting second-team repetitions. He moved up to second-team, though, only because Da'Wan Hunte injured an ankle and/or shin. Didn't see it happen, but he sat out team. Tim Cason moved up to his spot.

The other two rookie DBs were on the scout team. Thought maybe Simeon Smiley would be on varsity, perhaps as a nickel/dime reserve, but wasn't on Day 1.

As for offense, WR Terrance Landers and RB Brian Lankford-Johnson were on the varsity, the most notable inclusions.
