Saints will get the ball with just under 4 minutes to play and ahead by 5 points. Let's see how Sean Payton plays this.

And I’m sure if Brohm had a talent like Brees he would be aggressive as well. Heck, if he had Joey Elliot or Curtis Painter he would be more aggressive.

Certainly you have a good point. But we went into a complete shell yesterday.

Smart - Brees v Blough
NFL v NCAA

some of you "fans" have lost it

You point out the obvious extreme, but you miss the point that you have to stay aggressive to win.

Edit: I think Brohm is going to turn out great and I hope he is at Purdue a very long time.

1. Not necessarily
2. Aggression has degrees of intensity and the level of intensity is directly affected by the reality on the ground

Agree, but are you saying we did the right thing Saturday evening based on what you saw and know about our team?

Since we lost, of course not.

However, I didn't enter this conversation until you posted about Brees throwing it deep. That is not a reasonable analog to our situation.

Honestly, I am probably more critical of the defensive play calling on Nebraska's last drive than I am the offensive play calling on our last drive. One more first down would have clearly salted it away, but we had to keep bringing pressure and keep them in bounds on D.

Other than the 3rd and 4 I was ok with the offensive play calling. There was no way we were going to get 4 yards with the defensive alignment they were in. Highly likely a TE would have been wide open for the first down. Maybe this was on Blough not changing the play, or maybe he was to scared too?

OK, you will jump all over me on this one, but Orton audibled to that long TD pass that beat MSU in the snow storm up there. Tiller was going nuts on the side line when he saw what Orton was doing.

I agree the defensive play calling was the main issue. We needed to play more agressively.

Not going to jump on you, but again not a good analog:

1. Blough isn't Orton
2. That team had better receivers
3. We were down 5 points with 3 minutes left in the game and in a position where if we don't do something we lose.

True.

This is one of those weird instances where the QB has to make a decision to either complete a sure pass or eat the ball and take the sack to keep the clock running. There is no desperation heave hoping to complete in that situation as an incomplete pass is worse than a sack.

I am pretty sure Brohm doesn't trust Blough to make that decision.

I'm not saying have Blough throw a bomb like Brees or Orton. My pointing out the Orton audible is that maybe Blough was too scared to do so to even go to a conservative play that might have won the game? With 9 defenders in the box slip a TE out. If wide open throw, otherwise go down and keep the clock running. A conservative play that might win the game.

You are probably right about that trust.

Stout1, I think we have beat this to death!

On a lighter note, I was drinking Bell's Kalamazoo Stout during the game--good stuff!

It has been a while since I had a Bell's stout. I am still a sucker for the old standby Guinness, though I like Murphy's as well.

With most craft brews, I tend to be intolerant of brewers who "turn the volume to 11" on the theory that a stout is even better if they make it MORE stout or a hoppy beer is better if it is so hoppy you are picking out the bits of hop leaves. How was the Bells?

I used to only drink Guinness. It is just a little too flat for me, I prefer something a little stouter. I definitely agree about not liking hoppy beers.

or maybe if he though the WRs would catch it...Blough was mostly on point today. Other guys gotta make a play every now and then.

The receivers should watch Michael Thomas of the Saints catch a ball, it is a thing of beauty. He works constantly on strengthening his grip. It is like the ball just sticks to his outstretched hands and you can tell he has a vice-like grip and no DB is going to be able to knock it lose.
