What a weird team. They can beat anybody, but could lose to anyone. Not that Hofstra is that bad. Do you think Mulcahy had some expressions? Or flops?

It was hilarious watching Mulcahy whining because a Hofstra player pulled a flop on him and he got called for a foul. After what he did with Edey, it was great!

That "great" Rutgers defense was no where to be found.

I think a lot of major conference teams lose interest in the NIT. That's probably part of the issue here.

When you only had 32 or 48 making the NCAA field (and the limits on conference teams), the NIT was a much bigger deal. Heck, Purdue was co-champ with Michigan State and Iowa in '79, but they could only take two conference teams, so Purdue had to go to the NIT.

That's not counting earlier years when the NIT was actually perceived as more prestigious than the NCAA tournament.

Yes Tex. That was my senior year. That '79 team had a better record, finished higher in the Big Ten, was ranked higher, and went further in their tournament than the '80 team, but the '80 team is usually remembered more because of their ncaa run.
