correct me if I am wrong but Purdue loses:

Davis
Hill
Hammons
Toyra

and adds:

Edwards

What will Purdue do with the other 3 scholarships. I am not saying Stephens is going anywhere, but it would be foolish to not point out that Purdue could possibly have 4 scholly' available.

Who is getting them?

Toyra is a walk on. Only 2 open

Couldn't have been. 3 seniors, 1 junior, 4 sophomores, 3 freshmen and 2 red shirts = 13

You are right, he was his junior year. Okay what does Purdue do with their 2 maybe 3 open spots?
Bank them for a loaded 17 class. Unless you can add a McDonalds AA, I would not waste one. We have 11 solid players.

Need to get Desmond Bane. He is now a high priority target for Painter. He is exactly what is lacking from the program. He is a more athletic, better shooting, and better built version of Davis. 6'5 225 right now as a senior who can hit the open jump shot and run the point as a combo guard. He is going to be really good in the college game and that is coming from multiple high school coaches I have spoken to. Phinisee from McCutcheon is a high priority for the 2018 class as well.

Bane needs to be brought in, offered a scholly, and shown he could have the potential to start next season if he can play defense and get in to the lane. As good as Mathias is, he simply isn't athletic enough to guard opposing wing players who are very good. Could imagine Mathias trying to guard Nunn or Blackmon an entire game? It would get ugly real fast so adding an athlete like Bane becomes a high priority.

Banking them is like throwing the white flag. Seems like not filling out your roster is a waste. You almost have to plan on departures.

I mean technically they are new additions but we do have an improved Smotherman and Weatherford coming off of a rs year so you could actually say we have a three man class coming in.

Edwards
Smotherman
Weatherford

I have changed my mind on this since Thursday. If we can get a dynamic perimeter guy this spring, sign him. Smotherman and Weatherford red shirted because they couldn't beat out the limited players ahead of them.

Maybe it's Neal, maybe Bane, maybe a 5th year, maybe a juco, maybe someone else. Odds are we will lose at least one player in the next year, so we will still have 2 scholarships for 2017.

I was just looking this info up.Article out of JC journal says Purdue has 3 scholarships available for 2016. However one will be saved as the 2017 class is considered very very good. Comparable to the 2012 class. Over at Hammer alot of talk about that Cullen transferring from New Mexico. He is transferring and will have 2 years left right away. He is a 6'4 combo guard. Look him up. I guess he was harrassed at New Mexico. I thought he played well in that New Mexico Purdue game back in December. Avg 3.6 assist and 12 pts although did turn ball over. I'd take anyone who can pass.

Yet he has no offers from power conference schools.

There are 3, 1 is already taken by CE. There are 2 remaining. We only lose KS after next year, which leaves 3 for the loaded 17 class. I would keep them for that class. It's 2 late in the recruiting season to land anyone other than a Hill type player, which I would pass on. If we could add another Swanigan type, then yes, I would pull the trigger.

Schools bank them all the time. Adding a kid that will sit on the bench is wasting them.

It's possible Taylor will have come far enough by then to be that guy. We also don't know what we have in Weatherford, do we? And to me it's reasonable to expect a more consistent, contributing Smotherman on both ends of the floor.
I like the idea of banking the other schollys. The '17 class looks really good.

The 2016 class was looking good early too but look what we got?? 1 guy so far, don't get me wrong that 1 guy is a heck of a player but we were in on soooo many guys. So banking on 2017 is risky unles you know for a fact you can get your guys. Got a feeling Bane is a lock if offered.

It was harder to recruit for this years class because we have so much coming back. 17 will be different. Of course Bane is a lock if we offer. He only has 1 or 2 D1 offers and they are low mid majors. He's a 2 star recruit.

Thanks I know who Bane is. The next 2 years we have so much coming back minus any early departures so why would you think 2017 will be any different?
Painters been hurt before waiting on guys then having to settle for someone else. Either way we're going to get guys in 2017 but I'm tired of hearing "bank on 2017," nothings guaranteed these days.

Not only "not guaranteed," but careful research indicates we are not in the lead for any of those that everyone is so excited about. The likes of KY, MSU, NC, OSU, L'ville, and yes, IU are generally listed, at this point in time, as their leading places to land. It is great that there are so many good ones and that we are fighting for them, but reality is what it is. The domino effect could easily change things, but all we know is what we guess to be true at this moment.

Excellent point. I know recruiting is a crap shoot and kids can change their minds at a moments notice, but are we "leading" on any of these key 2017 recruits?

Not trying to start rumors but there has to be some suspicion that Basil may transfer after next season also. He is a solid player who could play a huge role for another team. He will be coming off the bench likely and may be not seeing minutes he likes. He wouldn't have to sit out a year if he transferred. But who knows maybe he will embrace his role and stay his RS Senior year. I sure hope he does he seems like he could be a great leader.

Good lord people. Really grasping at straws here.

64 million dollar question. Too late for any significant additions in '16 but '17 is the most important class in Painter's tenure. IMO, more important than what happened Thursday.

Because Swanigan and Haas will probably leave after next year. So your logic is settle now and don't even try?

Haas- starts next year. Should be improved
Biggie- offensive game should improve
Edwards- May be the leader of this team
Mathias- scoring will go up. Needs to be more aggressive
Thompson- will get the minutes. Needs to continue to improve overall

Pretty much agree with that Summy but I think Cline will be a huge factor next year, if not starter then 6th man.

Agree. I think Thompson, at the VERY least, starts game 1 for us at the point. I'm going to guess he starts the majority of the season as well. Lets not forget, this guy did exactly what we needed a point to do. He didn't force his shot, he played solid defense, and he didn't turn the ball over(much). Those 3 things alone are very important in a motion offense. He needs work, but who doesn't?

Not sure who is going to come in behind Thompson, whether its Weatherford or Edwards. Nobody has seen either play a single college game. I wouldn't be surprised to see neither getting many minutes if we trim down our rotation to 9 players, with only Cline/Smotherman/Stephens/Taylor getting solid bench minutes. Smotherman could guard a quick, penetrating point if need be while Mathais or Cline bring the ball up. We desperately need improvement on breaking the press though. We lost probably 5-6 games because of that.

Cline is going to be getting solid minutes at the 2.
Stephens and Basil will get minutes at the 3, but I see Basil playing as a stretch 4 with our lineup. And obviously Taylor backing up Haas, there's no other option, and I think he will end up being a pretty darn good player.
