Rivals gives Purdue a D grade for recruiting

basically said couldn't keep 7 pledges and the lone 4 star is on hold after winning the West. Somewhat unfair due to the short time Walters had.
We’ll see how Walters does in the transfer portal but you can’t really find fault with this right now; Purdue lost who they lost late & signed so far who they signed…

This shouldn't be taken as a indictment of Walters but the circumstances around his hiring. Now let's see how he develops the program going ahead.

And the reality is this class was rated better than only one other Big 10 team IU.

You can be extremely positive. Or you can be objective like Rivals and give us a ranking based on our overall recruits ratings. We had 1 4 star and he hasn’t signed. The class is small. In addition to the players who decommited, we also lost several key starters to the portal or nfl. I read Graham decided to declare for the draft.

When Brohm was hired, he brought a lot of recruits with him.

I don’t blame Walters, but if this class was IU’s class instead of Purdue, I’m fairly certain most people would agree it was a D at best.

I hope we become a big player in the portal. If not, it is what it is.

This class was only marginal before Brohm left so it could only get worse. Brohm wasn't a great recruiter and it shows.
This year’s class was not an awesome class before Walters arrived. I don’t blame Walters. But I do believe Rivals provided a correct rating for what the class is. Regardless of the coach, this class was not great. When you subtract 7 players, the ranking will definitely decrease!

I am not too concerned right now. I'd rather Walters take his time to put a good staff together and see what he has on the roster then hit the portal hard to fill the gaps. That's preferrable to him signing Brohms recruits just to fill a class.

2024 is his first true class.

Those are the exact words people said about Hazell and Brohm. The people he signed are the people who wanted to play for him. The people who decommited are people who didn’t want to play for him. He also went to Texas for a couple of days. I doubt he was looking for a coach. So basically he recruited this entire class!

I don't recall. Hazell was 10 years ago and Brohm was 6. Either way, those supposed statements are irrelevant.

yea, I didn't think he was a great recruiter neither. Looking at what's going on at L'Ville, don't know if that's an indictment on Brohm or Purdue.

The posts are in the archives of this forum. It will take you 10 minutes to look them up! Look for a poster named Wolegib!

Posters are constantly talking about players and coaches of the past. If you can’t look back 10 years ago, then you can not learn from the past!

It’s funny people remember the great things from 10 years ago, but not the bad things or the facts!

Hazell actually added players to the amount of players hope recruited. Hazell was also hired in December. He also flipped a player.

But the facts remain, the players who signed are the players who wanted to play for Walters. It’s funny the people at Louisville are calling this year as Brohm’s first class. I guess it’s different for Louisville than Purdue!

Grade seems about right, but in this day and age in order to sign a top class you gotta pay up or put in a lot of time. We were in the position to do neither this year. Luckily in this day and age the portal makes it easier to reload in other ways.

I remember the bad things and the good and the facts from 10 years ago. But I'm not going to care what decade-old message board posts say. You can if you want. But just because it was posted here doesn't make it fact. That's is a fallacy of yours.

Here is a fact for you: Hazell didn't have an early signing period. Nor did he have NIL or the Portal to consider. Your comparison is flawed.

One big difference this year compared to past is that Walters came from the position of defensive coordinator and the head coach is staying. Hazell and Brohm were both head coaches and brought some of their recruits with them. They also brought alot of their staff. Walters would have had tp convince Illinois recruits to abandon Illinois and come to Purdue.
There id still time to pick-up a couple of recruits but I would say that next year will be a better indicator of recruiting ability. He has already made a good impression by visiting the Indianapolis area and connecting with the coaches and giving out a scholarship to a deserving player.

To be honest for those that can’t remember, Hazell kept all of his previous commitments made to hope and added 6 additional players
And only about six of those guys in DH2s first class contributed ANYTHING to Purdue football.Walters first class here may be small right now but I think He will add a few more players to it and perhaps more than six of them will be good players.

Exactly. Shepherd getting all those WR made Brohm look much better at recruiting. Once he left the talent stream at WR stopped. George was a layup too.

Not fair at all to grade the new coaches poorly with what they inherited in the first place.

A great class for Purdue is probably a B+. Bringing in about half the bodies of an average class and no superstars I think the grade is fair. Having said that, I like the guys we got and I’m hopeful to get the two who are committed but unsigned. I also agree that a “poor” recruiting class isn’t a sign of imminent failure for the program. I think the staff we’re putting together will make up for that small negative blip in short time

The portal has changed the recruiting process. The problem in rating classes at this time is that the historic methodology of rating classes has not really adapted to the new environment created by the transfer portal. Since the full staff has not been put in place at this time and the transfer portal has a much more open window, it is hard to really make accurate statements as to whether it is good or bad for Purdue at this point.

No he didn’t. He lost a few dl that ended up at other fbs programs

Portal doesn't help if you don't have the cash to pay them. Players are entering the portal hoping for a payday. The days of players playing for an education or to represent a school are long gone.

Walters had little time to recruit. Hazell and Brohm didn't have to deal with the portal or NILs when they started and both had more time. Ridiculous to even compare. Whatever Brohm did to elevate the program he has trashed.
