Question for those who attended the Wisconsin game: wasn’t it obvious that the Badgers intentionally timed their fouled-out players sitting down so that the “SIT DOWN!” would be shouted during our player’s free throw motion?

Someone asked CMP about this during his show and he didn’t seem to think it was intentional.

You don't really think that's having an impact on our guys shooting FTs do you?

Maybe we should ask the opposing fans to not wave their arms.

I did notice the same thing and assumed it was intentional.

Almost every good team does that. There's been players that have feigned sitting down just to mess with the Paint Crew.

Combining the fact that it was likely the first time someone fouled out while we're shooting free throws this season, it's been nearly 2 years since that happened and the whole Paint Crew wasn't in attendance is why it happened.

There's no reason it should effect the shooter and isn't that big of a deal

I gave my tickets away for that game, but while watching on TV and when the announcer indicated he was waiting to sit down, I told Kim he is waiting for the shot. If worried that this might cause a miss all they have to do is change it to stay down rather than sit down after release.

If you DON"T think of those little things, you are leaving "potential" on the table.

Same here was most certainly intentional. CMP not paying attention to it doesn't surprise me either, he has bigger things to worry about.

I'm not advocating NOT doing it, but the PC needs to be aware of what is going on as it can throw things off with a sudden yell just as you're releasing a free throw in an otherwise quiet stadium.

even if they did, so what... I'd hope our players have better concentration than a dog that sees a squirrel.

One of the dumbest cheers/chants ever and true when they did it while I was in the Gene Pool in the 90s. Come up with something new and creative please.

I do think Edey missed one because of it.

And I’m not complaining. It’s great gamesmanship. Maybe the Paint Crew needs to wait till the Free throw is made before they yell.
Come on man..He didn't miss because the Paint Crew shouted. He's a 75% FT shooter, he's going to miss 1/4. He just happened to miss that one.
Like I said, do you think it bothers players when they're shooting FTs and the opposing fans are doing everything in their power to distract them? Very rarely. Guys usually shoot about their avg.

Were you there ? I was, and I’m telling you, it affected his shot. You could hear a pin drop in there, and then all of a sudden they yelled right in the middle of his delivery. It was nothing like a continuous roar during a road game.

And he DID NOT shoot his average. 4-8.

Changing it to "and stay down" after they sit seems like a brilliant solution to me...

A player fouling out at Mackey and our freethrow shooter being distracted might happen every...well...I've seen it once in 40 years of watching Purdue. Not something I will lose sleep over.

Been to a lot of games at Mackey, but that’s the first time I’ve noticed an opposing team intentionally sitting down during the free throw motion. Paint crew needs to make an adjustment.

This has been happening for years. Of course it's intentional. CMP doesn't want to stop the kids from having fun though. We should make the FTs regardless.

CMP doesn’t think it’s intentional.

And of course we SHOULD make the FT regardless, but our home crowd shouldn’t make it more difficult to do so.

I just think CMP doesn't want to silence the fans. I've seen players literally stand right up until the time the FT is shot and then sit down. Maybe it's only Wisconsin players over the years since they're sneaky bastard badgers. But it happens quite a bit.

Give me a break. If our players are too mentally weak that the crowd is impacting their free throw shooting, then we have bigger issues than I thought.

Do you think it helps to have thousands of fans interrupt complete silence during the back stroke of a free throw, with a sudden roar?

I was up behind Wisky bench. 100% intentional (one guy tried it on both free throws) and we went 0-2 on free throws with it (one Edey, one Ivey)

I don’t think it hurts. I think it’s a weak excuse.
You think it bothers him when the opponent is talking trash while he’s on the FT line?

You think thousands of fans suddenly shouting “SIT DOWN“ during his back stroke is better than complete silence? If so, why don’t we have the paint crew yell suddenly during all of our free throws?

No, I don’t think it matters. Unless he’s got a bee stinging his eyeball, there’s no excuse for a distraction being the reason you miss a FT.

This has been going on as long as that chant has been around. High school players were doing it to cheer blocks when I was in school 20 years ago.

Then why doesn’t the Paint Crew randomly shout during all our free throw attempts?

There's no way to objectively measure the impact of the crowd on free throw shooting. Unless a guy is a 100% shooter at home where it's nice and quiet but shoots 50% on the road.
Trying to blame the crowd for a FT miss is like a golfer blaming a camera click on missing a 3 foot putt.

I wasn’t blaming the crowd for the miss.

Simply asking the question: “is it beneficial for our home crowd to suddenly shout during the back stroke of one of our player’s free throws?”

Apparently you think it is. I do not.
