Wasn't Mike Roberts he of the inadvertent whistle fame at Madison Square when we had a great chance to beat OK with Griffith. We seem to be the whipping boy for lousy refs in our own house. Absolutely ridiculous. We also need to shoot better on free throws and 3's and cannot turn the ball over 15 times and expect to beat a top five team.

Michael Stephens, a Big East official at the time I think. He also worked the 2015 NCAA Championship game between Duke and Wisconsin.

They made some bad calls that affected the game, due to foul trouble by our bigs, BUT they didn't cost us the game. We also had a lot of calls go our way late in the game. I say this game came down to what the OP said at the end, missed FTs, wide open 3s, and turning the ball over. Just can't do all 3 of those things and expect to win a game. But the fact that we DID all of those things, along with getting in deep foul trouble early, and STILL brought this game to one possession at the end, shows the character and resiliency PU has.

The refs didn't cost us the game, they seldom do. FT's and TO's killed us. I do think Painter really needs to go to bat for IH and CS. Start early and stay in the refs ear all game.....doesn't have to be obnoxious about it but IH really gets some bad calls just do to his size alone.

Usually on the broadcast, you don't always see CMP or the other coaches.....and posters who were at the game give us some keen observations. However, last night, it looked like CMP was "active" in pleading his case...during the game and at breaks. I also saw Jay Wright do that a couple of times.

My only real criticism on the officiating was it just seemed to have been an "over-officiated" game...though it seemed even-handed to me, and Purdue I think got a couple of breaks as did Nova. Some good things......called some of the push-off arm-bars....one was probably a good sell against Nova.....called a carry and some of the points of emphasis. There was a stretch though where it seemed every possession, there was a whistle. Maybe I was just too into the game emotionally. However, it just seemed this crew was a little giddy and became whistle-happy on both sides. JMO. I chuckled on one of the sideline calls off of BS (which was a good call), I thought the official was going to slap the floor like a defender. Crispin on the BTN broadcast went off on them several times about wondering what they were seeing or how do you call that...on some of the inside stuff....both ways.

One good thing is that the Boilers learned how to play with foul trouble on the bigs....both in a substitution pattern and avoiding fouls on the floor......IH still needs to be a little careful on that score. I think if he pulls his arms back more going straight up, he can avoid that call.....

It was an entertaining game for me except for the final result. As others have posted, turnovers, FT's, and inability to consistently hit the timely shot (except for PJT's half-court bomb) ultimately cost the Boilers IMO. It was heartening to see them come back twice from a double-digit deficit when things were slipping away.....hopefully that mindset/experience pays off with dividends down the line.

After watching the replay last night, I would definitely state that Isaac's second foul and Biggie's 4th foul were both lousy calls. The fact that these lousy calls limited their playing time alone makes my case that we were f__ked by the refs. I agree that there were many other contributions which led to Purdue defeat. Itemize one call that we got that was not deserved??? The manhandling of Biggie and Isaac should have resulted in more calls IMHO.

Refs could've been better, but refs didn't cost us the game.
We could've hit more free throws or shot better to have the outcome we wanted. This team looks good and will only get better.

It's early in the season and the refs are still getting in the groove of officiating. They're trying to give more freedom of moment on the perimeter. It'll move back to the norm later in the year. The 5th foul on Paschall was most likely a makeup call from earlier in the game. Purdue will be fine and will grow from this game.

Bigohh,

Even though VE traveled a couple of times that got called, he also got away with a couple IMO (don't know the exact time of the game), CS once too.....now Hart maybe also moved his pivot foot a couple of times that didn't get called as well. The second offensive foul that CE drew might seemed questionable.....the double foul on CS (if anything was on him....I thought that could have been a play-on). Maybe the Nova fans can give some perspective as well.

I get the frustration, and I think at least one each on CS and IH probably could have been no-calls....they were close, IMO. Some of us said this last year with AJH....sometimes you just have to be a little more careful, especially early in the game.

We can agree to disagree too on these....in the end, Villanova made more plays when it counted than the Boilers.

It should make playing on the road a bit easier:) Seriously, it does get frustrating.....especially when it boils down to a one or two possession game. That typical one or two cheap foul called on Haas has gotten real old........

My final point on this speaks to your playing on the road statement. I would expect Purdue to at least break even on the calls at home and that was not the case in the big game last night. I keep wondering if Purdue is just the ref whipping boy because MP and/or the Athletic Dept. just accepts this poor job or wtf the story really is. It seems obvious that it does not happen at MSU or IU. I suppose at IU with all the rednecks the refs fear for their lives more than in civilized WL but there is an inquity that does not happen to the likes of Duke or Kentucky in their respective houses.

A Villanova guard ran over 2 players when they inbounded with somewhere around 30 seconds to go. Don't know if you could see it on TV because I was at the game, but he definitely avoided a charge over at a minimum 1 player and possibly the 2nd. He just trucked over the first defender...think it was PJ. We were down 1 pt then and that would have given us the ball with the ability to take the last shot.

It was Dakota Mathias IIRC, and I think it was Hart. Check out the video below just after the 21 min+ mark.....let those judge for themselves. Candidly, to me it looked like enough contact where they could have called something, but (trying to take off my Black & Gold glasses) it didn't seem like enough to warrant/expect a call. Maybe Purdue was "owed" one from the DJ Byrd Nova game a few years ago if you subscribe to that thinking. I get why many were upset/annoyed with the officiating. Sometimes, you just can't avoid the discussion.

No matter whomever receives the perceived "breaks," it shouldn't distract from how entertaining the game might have really been, despite mistakes from either squad. Upset that Purdue lost and some of it was their own doing, but Villanova is a really good team....you're gonna have to execute to beat them on just about any night. JMHO

You are correct and just another example of a call a team should get at home.

lol dakota got headbutted on that play too. Is clearing space with your head legal? he tried to flop and get the call. rough sequence for dakota there.

The charge call against Hart should have been a no call. In my opinion there is too much leadway given to the offensive player. There's one. I am sure their are more for both teams such as the charge Bridges drew against Isaac where he laid down prior to any contact. There always are.
