Refs don't affect games

How do refs cause Purdue to shoot 15% from three and get badly out rebounded?

So you have no answer, got it.
You're kidding, right? Well, since I believe refs should be replaced with AI, maybe I should just let an AI bot explain it to you. Take it away, ChatGPT...

[ChatGPT] :
Referees play a critical role in basketball games, as they are responsible for enforcing the rules and ensuring fair play. However, referees can also have a negative influence on a game in a number of ways. Here are some examples:

  1. Inconsistent or biased calls: Referees can make inconsistent or biased calls that favor one team over the other. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as unconscious biases, pressure from the crowd or coaches, or a lack of understanding of the rules.
  2. Missing important calls: Referees may miss critical fouls, travels, or violations that can impact the outcome of the game. This can be due to a lack of awareness, poor positioning, or simply human error.
  3. Over-policing the game: Referees who call too many fouls or violations can disrupt the flow of the game and frustrate players and coaches. This can also lead to a lopsided game, where one team is penalized more than the other.
  4. Under-policing the game: On the other hand, referees who don't call enough fouls or violations can allow players to get away with dirty or dangerous plays that can result in injuries or unfair advantages.
  5. Making the wrong call: Referees may make mistakes or misinterpret a play, which can result in the wrong call being made. This can lead to protests from players, coaches, and fans, and can affect the momentum of the game.

Edey shoots the ball 17 times and get ONE foul called late in the game?

He was fouled (by rule) 6-7 times on shot attempts.
Heck he had his arms pulled down on rebounds 4-5 times.

That COMPLETELY changes the results.

You can’t let a team go on a 32-8 run I get that.

BUT…..That run wouldn’t have happened if the officials had the game under control. We would have had a much larger lead at the 16:30 min mark.

It’s way out of hand at this point. Soooooo frustrating.

Yep Purdue builds an even bigger lead at half maybe 2x at half if they call fouls not rocket science. And takes that momentum then who knows. You are an absolute freaking idiot if you don't believe that.
Matt is his post game, blamed us getting whipped on the boards and staying in frt of our man. Did not blame refs, so he must be idiot.

You are so miserable and blind.

If you don’t think officials effected the outcome of the last two games you shouldn’t watch or call yourself a basketball fan. 100000000% affected the outcome. Painter is saying what he’s supposed to be saying in press conferences. Gezzzz

Don’t celebrate when Purdue wins the big ten and make their final four run. All you do is complain about this team

So no answer on the threes? Rebounding? You know there is a difference in losing a game because of refs, which I agree happened and having the fortitude to hit shots and rebound and still win despite the calls. It is likely the remainder of Purdues Big Ten games will be called this way. If they don't hit shots and rebound, they will lose all but one.

I am Matt's biggest fan and supporter and I live and die with Purdue, but we have to accept we got our butts kicked today and Matt knows it. We got to get back to playing hungry and confident. Blaming the refs is soft and gets old. Losers do that.

I didn’t think the game was reffed very well, however, Purdue lost this game on the court, they got their asses kicked in the second half. Hopefully, the bad week is out of their system, some guys are scuffling right now, I’m confident they’ll rebound. Also, can’t have 2 starters not getting a point, might be time for some lineup alterations.

Ok true or false. It's very reasonable that Maryland played the first 15 minutes of the first half and the first 8 minutes of the second half foul free.

Not only false, but down right impossible when you have the most dominant player in college basketball and he’s a post player on top of that. If Purdue were a team that stood around and jacked up 35-40 threes a game maybe, but not the way Painter built this offense. The only way to stop this offense is to rough it up and get away with it.

Not one person will answer that question, because they're like "crap" he got me. Aggressive teams foul and they're aggressive. No way a team doesn't foul for more than a half.

I said the exact same thing about 15 mins into the first half. Imagine how frustratng that’s got to be.

Gillis T was a foul. He got the T out of frustration from the first 25+ minutes. If the refs make that call 3 mins into the game Gillis doesn’t even come close to having a reaction.

You can see the frustration wearing on our bigs. I feel like one of these games Edey, Gillis or even TKR is going to end up punching someone.

It’s sad they have to play the game the way it’s not designed to play.

Yep they said several years ago that we’re going to cut all the physical play, so Painter changed his recruiting and built some really good teams to take advantage of the more free flowing style. Now here we are, a highly talented team, built perfectly for that style and poof, it’s all back to the old ways, football on hardwood.

It has been said that a genius is another smart person born at the right time... as are team structure and officials calling the games

You want me to go track down the picture of them holding Zach's arm while he was trying to rebound - right in front of a ref?
its silly, the mugging on Zach the last few games have resulted in a team built around zach to play much worse and lose a couple of games. It's like Drew Brees going back to pass with no offensive lineman allowed other than the center. Good D always starts with physical play. Excellent D allows physical play without consequences. As Foster Loyer tweeted (Kim told me) 15 minutes in the game and no fouls on Maryland...give me a break...

Yea I don't remember the B1G being this physical 10 years ago. During Indiana's B1G title season 12-13, seemed like Indiana could get out and run pretty easily, really no tackle basketball. Minnesota was a pretty physical team with Mbakwe but even that team wouldn't be considered physical in this year's B1G. Don't know what the hell happened. Even in IUs 15-16 B1G title season, it wasn't this physical. B1G hasn't had a Final Four team since 2019... And the league physicality and officiating has just gotten worse and worse since.

Bingo. It doesn't seem to be limited to the BIG, though. Have you watched any SEC games this year? Even the ACC seems more rough than usual. Unfortunately this seems to be a trend across college basketball. The crux is, if you play ultra-aggressive D there's no way the refs can call every single foul. If the NCAA doesn't get a handle on this nonsense, it will eventually become systemic and the "new normal".

If this is the direction things are going, I'm not sure I'm interested in watching. Hockey has already been ruined in similar fashion. Where is the skill, the finesse, the beautiful, well executed team-focused offense? The game is devolving into a cage match that rewards the most physical team. Just brutal to watch.
