Admittedly, I am a far bigger Basketball fan but also a Football supporter. So we look to have a pretty good class in 2019. From what I can tell 2018 was better than previous years but top 25. My question to those that follow this much closer than I, is when does higher recruiting classes start showing results? It's obvious that as recruiting picks up the team as a whole should follow suit, but at some point it should all come together. Is it 2019? 2020? 2021? 2022?

What year do you all think the year will be that Coach Brohm's second recruiting class is making a big difference?

I was thinking 2020 would be the year we should see it all come together.

It will depend on the OL and QB development. If the OL develops well, it would be 2020 to see a big jump. Of course that assumes that either Sindelar gets a sixth year or Plummer or Sipe are good.

The WR’s would be solid from a strength standpoint. The DL was loaded with bodies last season, so that would give them two full years of strength training and the four players added in this class should make for a stout group upfront.

The secondary has added great size in the last three classes (including 2019) so tackling should be a strength.

A big question will be which coaches are still here in 2020 as some will be offered promotions on different staffs. If the 2020 class is as good as the 2019 then this program will see huge gains as long as Brohm is at the helm.

You're already seeing it. Rondale Moore is a result of that higher recruiting. And here's the thing; Brohm played 3 freshman this year. THREE. You keep on hearing about how Minny was the youngest team out there and Illinois played young, but Brohm and company were able to beat 3 ranked teams and get bowl eligible against the 33rd toughest schedule with one outstanding freshman and a whole lot of 60-70-80 class ranked recruits. That in itself is pretty incredible. IMO, you'll start to see even bigger dividends this year as his players start to see the field.

I think 2020 is the year we really see a big shift. Next year will be better as we’ll start to see better depth, last years redshirts and some standout freshman will make an impact. 2020 is when we should have depth and talent all over the field.

Agreed, Purdue will see improvement next year as talent in training (red ahirts) come available and outstanding recruits in depleted areas are utilized. However, it will likely be 2020 when we make the big jump.

What intrigues me more is how well will Purdue recruit next year? Hard to sell "playing time" but could see, "the foundation is set so come be part of something special". Is that enough to lure a 4* recruit? Time will tell.

Well we have to remember that as good as this incoming class is, not all of them are going to play a ton right away. GK is, the safeties probably will, if Bell signs he will. But besides that I would expect many redshirts, even with the talent that they have. Especially with the 4-game rule. So yeah, this class is probably geared towards major snaps in 2020 and '21. So recruiting for 2020 kids will have an eye towards 2022 and 2023. We have to keep developing depth. It's much different than basketball where you recruit for performance now. In football you recruit for performance in the future.

As with Rondale Moore, it can show up on the field immediately, and there are some pretty good new recruits which should contribute immediately. The coaches have been able to evaluate and get a lot out of their players up until now, and with more talented players entering the program, they'll have much more to work with. Add a few points to some of the early results last year, and we would have won several more games. So just a little improvement in the player's capabilities can make a big difference. Next year should be a big (giant?) step ahead, but by 2020 the team may be capable of competing for a national championship.

But at least Brohm and company have made Purdue football exciting and fun to watch again.

I guess it has to be a similar pitch that elite programs who consistently get top 10 classes. Elite players want to compete against elite competition.

I read an article from either Matt or Brian that had CJB saying a lot of the 2019 class are physically ready to contribute now. Possibly even an OL or 2.

Should we expect Purdue to crack the top 25 at some point next season? I would hope if things go as planned (my planning that is) it should happen early. I also believe that the 2020 team to be ranked all season with a top 10 not out of the question.

It looks to me that we'll have 8-10 of these 2019 recruits that will make some major impacts, in 2019. That said, I think we can win 8 games next year. But I agree that 2020 will be our bust out year; assuming Jeff Brohm, and his staff, stick it out here.

I think we will crack the top 25 next year. I think we will see signs of it all coming together starting next year. We should have an easier schedule, which will help. 2020 is when we should be a preseason ranked team and an excellent chance of being in the Big Ten championship. Next year is possible too, but things would have to come together perfectly for that to happen.

I agree with your “major impact” statement. The local radio station talked a lot about the TE Bilodeau last week. Saying he has incredible size and skills. Which I would like to add, I’m glad we finally got a Boilermaker if themed radio station here in town now. Gotta help with exposure. I’m wondering if CJB questioned why we didn’t have one when he first arrived on campus. I know from lurking the UL board (shhhh) they have more than one.

You never know but it looks like Coach is set up for a pretty long run at Purdue. He did not leave for UL and he is making a lot of money. As a coach he can accomplish anything he wants at Purdue. I hope so.

I was the OP and just wasn’t sure how long it takes some of these kids to get up to speed. Bright future

I agree with 2020 being the year for a breakthrough. I just want to add, how AMAZING is it that we are talking about 8 win seasons and competing for the Big title compared to praying we can sneak into a low tier bowl.
More interesting is that with 8 or more win seasons we will be playing our last regular game each year to keep the Bucket and once again keep IU out of a bowl game.

When looking at Purdue's recruiting class and future success, you need to also compare it against our opponents rather than just our past or ranking. The BIG 10 as a whole had an awesome recruiting year. Purdue was 5th in the BIG 10, but several schools still have scholarships left. Iowa and UW will always be tough. Northwestern picked up QB Hunter who will not be reflected in their recruiting class. I believe at some point Nebraska will once again be a powerhouse. Minn and Maryland are ? Rutgers, Illinois and IU will always be down.

And when Purdue does improve, our future schedule also gets tougher. Unlike some teams, Purdue does not schedule three non conference cream puffs. We may have a much better team, but Notre Dame will pose a tough challenge to win. We could be a very tough team, but still be fighting to win 7-8 games. I do believe the days of going 6-6 or worse are behind us.

Will this team be good enough to challenge for a BIG 10 championship? I think the answer is yes, but so will 4 other teams in the west. As we saw this year, Purdue is at the same level as the cream of the West. With a couple of breaks, Purdue could have easily gone 9-3 this year. Teams that win championships find ways to win ugly games. While others that come in second look good while losing.

I agree with your thoughts. If we string together multiple years of recruiting like this we will have talent and depth. The one difference we will have is that Jeff Brohm's trickery will be used as the difference in winning big games and not essential to winning every game as it is now. The surprise factor will be greater when it's less necessary.

Defense and depth initially next year, but not fully until 2020. We really need th OL to develop, my guess is you won't see a huge improvement, at least from this class there until 2021 (I hope I'm wrong there and Jornigan and Craig can contribute in 2020).

Its actually a good thing if recruits this year don't have to play next season because that means Purdue has good players on the roster already. Its exciting to think about the next few years for Purdue and how we should see improvements.

out here in Pa., we had an article in the local paper called The Barkley Effect, it was about how Saquon Barkley's success in the NFL and college has really ramped up psu's recruiting this year. So having a great player like Rondale should help our recruiting.

A top 25 ranking is not out of the question, especially with 8 wins (not impossible).

Top 10 in 2020 is really quite a stretch, IMHO.

I'm more concerned with results and our record verses a top 25 recruiting ranking. I stumbled across a UW football forum and they were really happy saying this year was their best recruiting class ever. If this is their best class ever, I shudder to think what they will do with it.

I wouldn't make too much of that.

Their class is ranked 25th (Rivals). Yes, they had their "best," in terms of ranking, but they've consistently been in the 30-40 range.

It’s a great question. In football skill position players have a better chance of seeing playing time as a freshman than linemen. Good talent breaks into the 2 deep as early as their redshirt freshman year. Great talent plays as freshmen. I feel it won’t be until 2020 or 2021 when our linemen, as a unit, will start dominating the line of scrimmage. When that happens we will win a lot of football games.

We will have impact players next year from this class. I am going to day one. If the same class was going to Alabama, ND, O$U, or Meatchicken, I would say two years.

My thoughts echo the words of Jeff Brohm,

“It’s important to get every piece of the puzzle,” Brohm said. “At the skill positions, I feel great about this class. I think they are guys who can come in and compete and make plays against great competition, can really do great things in this offense.”

I believe he mentioned Jorigan as the most ready to play on the O-line with Craig a possibility. He mentioned that Faucheux has a good chance of playing right away on the D-line. I believe a couple of the receivers will play right away. I feel like we hit the lottery with our TE class. Bilodeau & Miller are outstanding TE recruits. There are probably only 3 or 4 other teams in college football that recruited two TE's as talented as these two. At least one of our TE's will get some play time their Freshman year and maybe both. The safeties should get some play time right away. I like our two RB commits and feel like they will be solid.

Overall I think we recruited the skill positions very well, but I think we have work to do on both lines and at LB. I will be hoping to see some very solid line recruits in 2020 and hopefully some very good LB's as well. We are headed in the right direction and I have a lot of confidence that Coach Brohm will put together a great 2020 class that meets the needs of the lines and LB's.

I love this 2019 class but some of these guys will be redshirting. A lot of our best talent will still be very young next year. Some of these guys need to put on a little muscle to play their recruited positions at the college level, but a redshirt year will take care of that. Competing for big ten championships means these young guys have to win consistently against the likes of Michigan, O$U, Wisky, Nebraska, and so on. We will get there. I think we will see steady improvement in the next two years and say 2021 will be the earliest we are competing for a Big Ten Championship. I would love to be wrong about that and see us do it earlier. We have a lot to be happy about and I am excited to see this team develop in the years to come.
