Really Nebraska?

Everybody from the fan base gets super emotional when we aren’t #1, but all of our opponents get super emotional when we are. Happy to lurk in the top 10, knowing w rare good but not having the bullseye on our back.

50-50, Iowa went zone and changed the game. Nebraska just couldn't/didn't adjust and Iowa pulled away.
No, I'm not suggesting we should have played zone against NE. Simply pointing out another example of switching defense can make a difference. Announcers talked about it and so did Raphael back in the studio.

Iowa did it with no home court advantage. Terrible weather, place was empty.

They go zone in the first half?

Right around the 16:00 TV timeout. 2nd half
They were 1-10 from 3 in the first and played awful defense most of the night…probably cuz they didnt pack the post with 2-3 guys vs edey and played a regular defense. Saw they started 2-4 from 3 and made it a close game, and then Iowa put their slow down press and fell back to a 2-3 and that must have done it.

Iowa was up 17-2 early. NE closed the gap and was actually taking the momentum. Iowa made the switch and NE went flat and Iowa pulled back away. Fran talked about it in the post game interview.

their defense wasn’t good—-Iowa with 6 guys in double figures! NE also lives and die by the 3…and tonight, they died. It’s a tough strategy to play by…sometimes it works other times it does not and it really makes it tough to win games.

It turns out that switching up defenses sometimes does slow down a hot team...
To be fair, they were 1-10 from 3 in first half compared to 7-10 in ours. They were missing open shots, a few were a lot more open than vs us. The zone came in the second half….Iowa would press, only to slow them down a bit and then fall back to the zone. For as much man defense we play, it’s interesting we don’t ever press…I guess maybe it’s due to our 5 usually being a tad slower and we don’t have a ton of length to trap. But we could at least do a diff look like Iowa did and somewhat slow em down.

People are so desperate to be right, they completely ignore the facts of the matter.

IU shot 43% from 3 last night. Maybe they will have a let down in shooting against us Tuesday.

Looks like X was a non factor and basically rode the bench.

Minny played horrible. Couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in the first half…some of their shots were god awful and they went 3-20 from 3 overall. 2 quick fouls on Garcia (their versatile 7 footer) in first 4 mins of game and their PG (Hawkins) picked up 2 pretty quick—really let IU get out to their lead. Although Minny got it to within 5 at one point in the first half, as IU has its lulls a lot…particularly when woody does his hockey substitutions.

IU also continues to get outrebounded with 3 5 star players in their front court…beyond me how that happens. And they ar struggling from the FT line. I’m sure they’ll all shoot the best all year vs us as it’s basically a must win for them. Def Gonna be a tough one Tuesday.

Nope, just pointing out what happened. Some are so desperate to be right, they won't ever admit when they are wrong.

Did you watch the game? There is no way you can watch that 2nd half and say the zone didn't impact the outcome. Announcers, Raphael in the studio, Fran and Fred all commented on the impact it had. If both coaches say it was effective, who are we to tell them they are wrong?

NE had come back from a terrible 1st half (they were down 17-2) and had tied the score 50-50. As Fran said in the post game, One of his assistants had suggested going zone in the 1st half but he had said no. They suggested it again in 2nd half and he said yes. NE got very stagnant on offense and they never really adjusted completely and Iowa pulled away to win easily.

This happens a lot in college hoops. Not often in the B1G but it happens in other conferences. On this board there are a group of people that think if they admit that it can be effective they are then admitting CMP is wrong for not having it in the toolbox. Instead of just saying yes, it can work, they tie themselves in knots trying to explain why it doesn't work.

With Zach and Loyers limitations on defense with no plan B and no plan B on offense when teams pack the post and force Purdue to shoot, purdue can easily be beaten.

I’m on board to switch up defenses but just seems painter is not about that life. Iowa does seem to have more height and length than we do at all 5 positions, which definitely helps. But, we could throw out a 1-3-1, with Heide on top, Zach in the middle, Lance and TKR/Gillis on the wings and Braden the last line—it’s not West Virginia with Beilein or Pittsnogle, but a diff look. Or go 3-2 with Heide up top, combo of Loyer /braden / lance/hell, even Morton on the front 2 wings and then TKR/gillis/furst/Zach the last 2. And every now and then trap out of the zones. I was intrigued with marylands zone to man defense even.

Wish we would do the same with pressing. Not always trap, but just slow their offense down and make the other team run plays and think about the new defense.

Funny, that. I am not a stats guru, but I wonder how far you must go back, to find a final four coach that only, exclusively used man to man defense the entire year to get there?

Has KU, UK, UConn, Duke, UNC, Houston, Baylor, Gonzaga, UCLA played zone in their most recent final four runs? On the other side, Syracuse only played zone and never played man to man. (Honestly asking…gut says that none of those teams went zone and stuck to man to man in the last 10 years to get to the F4…but I don’t watch every single one of their games).

I obviously don't watch every single game of other teams either. I will say Self, Calipari and Coach K will/would mix in zone from time to time when MTM wasn't working. But I can't say for sure when/how often they did it. Just know I've been watching their games and they did it.

Sure…have you remembers them doing it during a tournament run though? I feel like no…maybe Roy Williams did with KU back in the day or with UNC…but can’t really remember when any of them did it in a game that was significant…but I could be wrong
