For me it is make the Sweet 16. We are a Top 16 team, the Big Ten Champs. We have a National PoY contender. We have good matchups (better size). We have a relatively close game geographically. It is time for Matt Painter to have March success.

I will be disappointed if Purdue is not playing on the second weekend of the tournament.

I agree. I think Purdue can and should make the Sweet 16. I don't want to take anything away from Vermont, Nevada, and Iowa State, but this Purdue team has to seize the day.

I still think a Purdue v. Kansas regional semifinal would be very cool. Awesome backcourt vs. awesome guards.

If you lose to Kansas, you are supposed to lose. Playing with house money as they say. No pressure.

The way the draw worked it put Purdue on the doorstep of #1 team pretty quickly......IF it takes care of business in the first weekend. That has been the problem.

Given the last two years I should say I would be disappointed if not a sweet 16. But given the last 37 years I am now disjointed enough in not breaking that streak ---- so I will say FF or disappointment .....(this IS one of the few chances to break that streak). And with this team I think when we play well together, we can beat anyone.

Disappointed:
  • Losing to Vermont = stains the entire season

  • Beating Vermont, Losing to Nevada = bitter taste, missed opportunity to advance against inferior team
Meh:
  • Beating Vermont, Losing to Iowa St = acceptable, understandable, but not satisfying
Satisfying:
  • Sweet 16, lose to KU = meeting expectations, difficult situation
Faux Satisfaction, followed by indigestion:
  • Sweet 16, lose to Miami/MSU = missed opportunity, almost worse feeling than losing to ISU, not as bad as losing to Vermont

Elite 8 = very satisfying end to successful season

Final 4/2 = elated

National Champs = Lord, go ahead and take me on April 4

I can understand disappointment in not going all the way to a FF but I think from an expectation point of view the Sweet 16 is logical.

The first round game comes with the most pressure - I won't lie, I'm nervous.

If Purdue wins, the 4/5 matchup is basically a draw. Would I be disappointed if that was a loss? Sure. Would I be pissed? I dunno about that. We've been in several 8/9, 4/5, 7/10 games and have won all but 1 under Painter (we've won the two 4/5 games under Painter we've played). Obviously 4/5 match ups are a bit tricker than the others as you're playing a much better team than when you're an 8/9 or what not, which means less room for error.

But of course the trick with the expectations game....is you literally have no idea what to expect. Everyone is obviously predicting Purdue's route - but Iowa State may not be the next match up and that would change how I view things much differently. And Kansas may not be waiting in the Sweet 16, etc. We could play 3 dougle digit seeds to make the Elite 8, which is great - but not necessarily indicative of anything if you don't play high-seeded teams and don't make it as far.

Is the Boiler Board the only one that tries to define and manage expectations ahead of time :) Kind of a Boiler tradition....that needs to go away....

I think it's more so that people tend to overreact (in fairness, both ways) with outcomes. People were calling for a new coach after losing to Michigan in OT, who was CLEARLY playing very well, and eventually also won the damn tournament. But if we beat Vermont, it's not like it's smooth-sailing, we're amazing and Painter is a legendary coach either.

Not sure I follow. We finished ranked what 14th and were seeded 4th. Clearly the expectation is sweet 16. I just answered the OP question.

Can we get Haas out of the game, please. Missed bunnies and offensive fouls is not helping. I am so tired of watching these guys play not to lose in this tournament.
