Tell Lusk to take a hike. His D has not been worth a hoot since he has returned from being fired from his previous job.

Boilers did a decent job on Jakucionis for the most part....Riley and White are the ones that really hurt them. Boilers also held their own on the glass, outrebounded by just two. Illinois leads the conference in the majority of the rebounding stats.

Purdue probably controlled more of the game action, but Illinois made more of the timely plays, and Purdue squandered some opportunities - that's enough to get you beat on the road against a quality opponent.

Just came up short - that kind of effort would have probably won a couple of the games they lost, but that's the way the ball bounces.

They have some weaknesses stopping the ball and staying connected, but I like what I've seen from Cox and Harris. I expect this team will be better defensively next season.

Smitty and Trey Kaufman were poor on Defense!! Our guys need to get their asses in gear and Listen to Coach Painter !! Need more savvy and situational awareness on Defense!!!?

Exactly, Tex.

We out rebounded one of the best teams until that final min where we had to jack up shots.

We got ANYTHING we wanted to on offense, but just didn’t execute at times. While we didn’t take a ton of 3s, which we should have taken more IMO, we were 5/12 until smith shot the last 3. Including those last 3, he had a ton of GOOD looks that he had nailed the previous two games. Loyer missed his 3s that were wide open and he usually hits those. Myles has one go in and out.

We answered their 8-0 run in the first half with a huge run of our own. We came out in the second half and had energy and executed.

I was encouraged by what I saw on the road tonight and want to see us keep playing this way in the BTT and win 1-2 games (don’t expect to win it).

The big 3 were huge tonight and the non big 3 were good too.

We played well enough to win. We just need to figure out how to close these games out. These last 5 losses, we have been up by double digits…we are fully capable of a deep run, but we need to understand how to close these games out and not let the other team back in.

With that said, Braden was marvelous (yes 3P shooting was off, I take him as being 2/6 and not 2/9 due to the last 3 he had to shoot). Fletch was great and TKR, he’s the best front court guy in the conference and is an AA.

Defensive wise, we played better but could elevate this, but not sure we are doing that this year.

Exactly Cox was excellent on Jak. Just great.

Not sure how Furst ended up on him late?
Furst D was good all game. Not so much on that last Jak 3. But really was a case of good O overcoming ave D.

Second this. Furst was (in terms for him) excellent on rebounding and boxing out—whole team was really. We need that every game from here on out. 1 game seasons now, so gotta play our best and if not, go home.

IIRC there was a switch at the top of the key after a screen. Heide should've been in instead of Furst at that point, but of course he had just fouled out. Who knows how the game would have unfolded if Heide wasn't called for 3 consecutive ridiculous fouls? We really needed his perimeter D.

What do you think the problems are on defense? How can they play different to stop it? It’s not just a rim protector issue.
The rim protector helps and makes teams play differently offensively and defensively.

Are problems are, we don’t play an aggressive “in your face” defense…haven’t since the baby boiler days where Mackey was known for “defense lives here”. The big 3 are not ones who are great on ball defenders. Cox and Harris will get there and Colvin has shown signs. Our front court seems to have received the worst whistle this year…not sure if it’s due to us having Zach for 2 years and we got a “favorable” whistle then…but nonetheless, I think we were just thrown off with what we thought we’d have in a defensive scheme this year with no DJ.

Furst was pretty good last night, but we don’t have 5 guys who can really guard you like an Auburn, Iowa state, Houston, and even MSU (well they are more team defense and play well that way, they have some decentish on ball defenders).

Smith is a ball hawk and excellent at playing free safety, but he’s not going to lock someone up night in and night out…yet.

we can’t fix it right now, but we need to bring in 2 - 3 guys who are good on the defensive side…like Lance was.
