When being pressed why does Purdue never run the baseline on an inbound after a basket...passing the ball to someone moving laterally away from a defender would have to make it easier andp revent the defense getting good upcourt position?
requires major quickness, they need to work on for sure. Not very many teams have a Jake Layman to disrupt and close in, like Maryland does. He was the difference not a doubt in my mind. When being pressed why does Purdue never run the baseline on an inbound after a basket...passing the ball to someone moving laterally away from a defender would have to make it easier andp revent the defense getting good upcourt position?

Because we haven't been able to run a decent inbounds play since CMP got here. When being pressed why does Purdue never run the baseline on an inbound after a basket...passing the ball to someone moving laterally away from a defender would have to make it easier andp revent the defense getting good upcourt position?
I might try it...what is the dial in number?
Not all presses guard the triggerman. If guarding you could also screen the point as you runb or have another player step out of bounds and pass it to him and then run inbounds yourself. Some will overload the zone...maybe four across the ft line to get it inbounds. Some things you want to do against a zone in half court you would do against a zone press. A big guy like layman can more easily force the ball to a corner and then cut the court in half and force sideline like he did and in this case screening him...running baseline could helpWhen being pressed why does Purdue never run the baseline on an inbound after a basket...passing the ball to someone moving laterally away from a defender would have to make it easier andp revent the defense getting good upcourt position?

Yeah, as our starting point guard, I expect him to be able to aggressively attack the press and create some easy baskets, but he just doesn't seem capable. Hopefully Carsen is taking notes...I don't think what Painter is having them do is wrong - but they aren't executing it well when push comes to shove. And some of the passes they've made are just not good. Once Painter made some subs, while it still wasn't great, it was still better than it was.
PJ's role as a ball handler is very interesting. He obviously has such few turnovers, but when he's pressured, he kinda turtles.

Against the 1-2-1-1 full court trap when we inbounded the ball the first two times we threw it in too close to the sideline and baseline( coffin corner) , on the third try when we finally did get the ball over the time line to AJ in the coffin corner (created by the sideline and time line) and AJ just handed it off to another player in coffin corner. In all 3 cases we were trapped and lost the ball! We need to either not pass the ball to these areas or get the ball back to the middle of floor as quickly as possible! One thing I would like to see them try is having the person in bounding the ball cut middle and become the middle man against a 1-2-1-1 full court press. Also when we are pressed we need to attack the press , make them pay the price. If we don't get our press breakers fixed teams are going to start pressing us as soon we get off the bus!I don't think what Painter is having them do is wrong - but they aren't executing it well when push comes to shove. I couldn't see from my seat, but imagine that layman was to shade a half a body to the wide side of the court to force the ball to the corner to start the press. If that first pass doesn't cut the court in half, the rest of the press is hindered. hence, why some will screen the person if guarding the triggerman. A 6'9" person that can move like Layman is a nice option to cut the court in half...Against the 1-2-1-1 full court trap when we inbounded the ball the first two times we threw it in too close to the sideline and baseline( coffin corner) , on the third try when we finally did get the ball over the time line to AJ in the coffin corner (created by the sideline and time line) and AJ just handed it off to another player in coffin corner. You are correct. Layman did dictate where he wanted the inbounds pass to go and we took the bait time after time! I sure hope Painter uses the DVD of this game to teach what not to do and what to do and do it before the Neb. I thought (hope anyway) that PJ grew up a little bit against that press. He has the handle and ability to attack the double teams, but he needed the confidence to do it. When he finally stepped up, Purdue was finally able to gain an advantage a find a way to win. When playing "high-major" DI competition, Thompson is typically lacking in quickness vs. many other point guards and the like. With his lack of relative height that makes it tough, which is probably why he wasn't offered by many high-major programs. Although it wasn't against the press, he did a good job vs. Maryland in fast-break situations, particularly with his tip pass/alley-oop to Vince Edwards for the dunk.
