is the plan to elevate alaimo to two and have Burton there in case there’s a run of injuries (I hope)

OR

To have Burton be the number 2 guy?

a friend just called me and wants to know

Just a hunch...Burton is aiming for a Master's degree and will be 3rd or 4th backup once Fall ball is in play.
He might still see some action in an RPO or Wildcat play. Aliamo is likely going to be #2 battling it out with Brady Allen. Just speculation only.
Ok this would be a good scenario

rather would have like to see a RB like Ky Thomas
But you can’t say that.. we are the nice guy school.. guy who isn’t gonna be an every down QB wants to come back for a sixth year? You say to hell with playmakers who could help lol

Having less than 4 scholarship QB on the roster would be playing with fire. Burton has experience and a year in the system. Free up a spot for an RB elsewhere.

Doing what lol. If you can’t stand back there and look less than three notches below plummer in that situation against IU.. what are you gonna do man? Lol

Kyle Orton was a true freshman in 01 right? If we end up in a position where Burton has to start I think that scenario would be sub 01 Orton.

Id say this:

If AOC has a mild injury causing him to miss a bit of a game, you put in Burton.

If AOC is going to miss just one game, you put in Burton

If AOC is going to miss 2 games or more, you put one of the youngsters in

I think there’s a bias that says “yes, play the older guy.” Most of the time that’s true.

but did you actually watch Burton as a fifth year senior against Indiana? It was gross dude

Judging him based on 1 pass attempt in garbage time against IU?

Alaimo would be my choice, one play, one game etc.

plus I really didn't notice much from him in any other game.
If the strategy was to have another vet option, IMO the best bet would have been to have the talk with Burton and bring in a transfer who has attempted a lot more passes and would just be happy to be here for one year.. maybe someone with future coaching aspirations

Who is this experienced QB who is signing up to come and compete for a backup role? There is no appeal to a Jack Plummer type. That's why he left. This is the price of getting Aidan back. Future is bright with Alaimo and Allen.

During one series with the third stringers versus IUs starters Is enough to say it was gross?
Him independent of that was.. what you’re talking about is Austin steps back, looks poised, has to dodge pressure cause of bad OL, then throws a strike that a third stringer drops.

what happened was happy feet and rushed decisions

Again, one play. Did you watch the UConn game?

Our best season in like 17 years and we’re back to nitpicking the little shut, huh?
Oh we are doing really well. I agree with pa though why not go for someone like who he was talking about? I’m not mad at brohm about this. Brohm and the program are doing great

Yes it would have been better , but gotta be a reason the guy is staying!
I have nothing against the kid, it's just he's a situational type player and when he has been in you know it's a run. I guess w/ Plummer gone, he'll be the guy now where we run that QB option/ outside pitch play once a game.

I guess I am the default Burton defender now, at least in this thread.
Consider the possibility that with Aidan and Jack the 2021 team was not in a position where they needed Austin to pass the ball. I'll trust the coaches who had good things to say about him preseason.

Understand, FDB.

That shouldn't make you a "Burton defender". It just makes you a reasonable human being.

How about the simple explanation that we have a coach with integrity, who recognizes that a player transferred here to help the team, has remaining eligibility, and has a home for the remainder of said eligibility.

Pretty damn good reason to have him on the sidelines for one more season, critics be damned.
