Back in the early 70s, my dad's Kiwanis group ushered Purdue football games to raise funds. He told me of some kind of running gag going on with someone at Purdue where the Ithaca/Slippery Rock score was always announced over the PA. Anyone know the story behind this?

I wouldn't say I'm "old", but I was a young kid just starting to attend Purdue games back then (I guess you'd say I'm "old"!) -- and I remember Slippery Rock scores being announced last over Ross-Ade PA system whenever scores around the country were given; I believe it was against whoever they played that particular Saturday too.

Hope this helps:

Slippery Rock score was always announced at Michigan Stadium as well. If SP was winning or won, a big cheer; a loss or losing was an exaggerated, disappointed "Ohhhh". Always great fun.

Not sure if it is still done; part of the fun was that in the days before video boards and cell phones, everyone was tuned in to and paid attention to the PA, so the reaction involved nearly all in attendance. Now, get off my lawn.

They used to announce it all the time on the college football shows, if I remember correctly, so that wouldn't surprise me. Growing up in the south, I don't think I had a perspective on how small Slippery Rock was at the time. I think I even wanted a Slippery Rock t-shirt just based on the school's name.

That is great. Thank you,

Well you're most welcome, thank you!

I just want to add here a little perspective re: getting older: you know you're getting "old" when you see grandsons of former Purdue greats playing college or pro football today.

I'm not bemoaning that fact, quite the contrary because when I see Trey Burton (a.k.a. Lawrence Burton III) or Derek Stingley, Jr. stand out on the gridiron today, it brings back wonderful, fond memories of watching their grandfathers play at Ross-Ade Stadium; both were elite athletes, just like their grandsons and I'm grateful for those memories. And I would love to meet grandchildren of any Purdue players from that time to share those memories with them, especially Derek Stingley, Jr.

I'm including this awesome clip too, for several reasons:
  • RIP Floyd Little, who passed on New Years Day, 2021
  • Bob Griese looks great -- this is what Old Gold really looks like!!
  • mistakes do happen, note how gracious Steve Spurrier handles it

You kids can play on my lawn all you want (because eventually it's gonna be your lawn), just throw me a beer from time to time. And remember to pay it forward! 🍻
