If bell is out, can Wright just move over to the right side? Or is there something about that side that prevents that? I think if he can catch he can be much more dangerous there especially with Plummer in.

also, brohm was naming the guys who will come in. Does Taylor just go to school here on one of the 85 schollies or?

Normally, yes. The two spots aren't night and day different. However, this year the offense has adjusted to moving Bell into different spots to highlight him more - like putting in the slot more, and stacking receivers. I'm not sure Wright can run some of those tighter/quicker routes.

Sad to see Rice get hurt. He was playing well whenever Bell would some out.

Yeah I’m sad for rice too

Honestly it is hard to answer this because every coach is different. If you like to “shrink” the field and focus on one side for you qb and Wright is your next best outside wr then yes probably move him.

If your qb is reading the whole field on every play then you probably leave him where he is, bring your next best outside wr into bell’s spot and adjust the qb read priorities to move wright up. With bell in he is probably no higher than a 3rd read. With bell out he will move up to 2nd or 1st read on most plays.

From the press conference

Q. Does being down Rice and maybe being down David bring any of those other young receivers into the kind of that strata where they might be in your two deep this week, whether it's Rahmaan Yaseen, Collin Sullivan, any of those guys?

JEFF BROHM: Well right now Abdur got in the game a little bit. He's played. I think Collin Sullivan will be the next man up after that. I think Preston Terrell will be the next man up after that.

The last part is problematic because I don’t think plummer looks left very much.. probably not natural for most above average college passers

Word is...... No Bell for Illinois Game. Make Thompson your DOGG if other cant stay healthy or catch the ball.
It seems Brohm was still holding out hope for DB3 playing this week earlier this week. It’s strictly a matter of DB3 clearing the concussion protocols. It seems like he’s doing quite a bit better.

Maybe Wright is left handed?

part of this equation is the chess match the OC is playing against a DC. With a team like Purdue that doesn't have a running game and uses the short pass like a run play, you want to move guys around and find the match ups you like (isolating slot receivers on LBs. Getting safeties lined up on a TE, etc). I think P has the weapons at WR to do this, but a lot relies on the QB to make the right read, go through his progressions and know where the match up advantage should be.

When I think mismatches.. anthrop is not fast at the slot. Sheffield is.. eh. Maybe they work burks in and start getting some big gainers in the middle to make defenses be honest

Anthrop is by far better than sheffield.. but it would be nice if they could spring someone with some more speed. Anthrop doesn’t scare anyone. Good dude though
I hate to single out a guy like this, but besides overall starter health and OL play, TJ might be the biggest variable between a 5 win and 7 win team. Currently trending toward 5-6. I didn't expect him to be Rondale Jr., but with his speed he needs to produce more than he is in the slot.

I mean .. it’s not pop Warner. I’m just talking about performance on the football field when I talk about these guys. Off the field they could be an angel or the worst guy you ever met for all I know

if TJ wants to play pro ball or any of these guys, I hope their feelings wouldn’t be hurt by reading this.. cause that world is full of brutal honesty.

I just don’t think sheffield plays smart. I think the way he plays jives with what we know. If anthrop had his speed he’d be a killer .. a killer.. he just doesn’t

Youre two best offensive weapons are Bell and Durham. the other WRs are going to get enough targets to be really impactful. Be nice if they caught them when they did get targeted.

Anthrop gets open. Sheffield not so much.
When Anthrop came into the game against ND, he got open. And he caught balls. I've been skeptical about Anthrop vs Sheffield. But I've not seen Sheffield do anything thus far this season. So If Anthrop keeps getting open and making catches, keep him in the dang game. He may not be blazing fast. But he's one of the most dependable receivers we have right now.

I don't think Anthrop is a mismatch guy, but I do think he's someone the D loses sight of or forgets about. I also think he understands how to find the open space in the defense. He's not going to make big plays, but he's a safe, reliable option. Similar to a Danny Amandola or Wes Welker type (not just because they're small white guys also).

We don't need every receiver to make big plays. We need guys to make first downs. We do that, and we move the ball. We move the ball, and we score. I don't care if we score via big play or move the ball to score 80 yards on 20 plays.

I don’t think he’s bad nor was I in any way saying that. Solid guy.

let’s step out of pop Warner talk and pretend we are Illinois coaches.

“hey guys, Durham is good. If Wright steps up it breaks down like this. We can throw the house against them and maybe play a dishonest house Of cards defense and get away with it. If any of the following positions rips off big plays in that scenario, we are gonna have to play honest against everyone:

slot
RB
WR opposite wright
QB (makes throws into coverage and not as a function of the offense/hits doerue, anthrop, other WR with throws that they can’t help but then into big plays”

But without an effective TJ, who is our speed guy? Who is running the jet sweeps to assist a paltry run game and bring the safeties closer to the line? Who is taking the 2 yard option route and turning it into a first down? You can't use Bell and Durham for everything.

With our line, i wouldnt worry about jet sweeps.

As for short routes, Doerue and Anthrop show up well in the short passing game. Horvath too.

We dont have a home run hitter on this offense. I dont think we will this year.

That last line is what I'm referring to when I say the difference between 5 and 7 wins

1 guy is not worth 2 wins unless it's a QB. Most starters are worth a fraction of a win over a full season.

I'm a little disappointed in our offense as well, but this defense seems to be at least as good as 2017 where we won 6 games with a BAD offense. This offense just isn't explosive, but is better than 2017, and got squeezed by a really talented ND team with top5 pick safety who was everywhere. This is a 7ish win team.

But, with Purdue's offense and lack of run game, you're reliant on big plays. 20 plays drives are great if you have an OL that can consistently block on 3rd and 2 to get you 3 yards, but this OL won't do that consistently against a B10 team.

Our D has made huge improvements. There's talent on the D side, including some NFL picks. Outside of GK and Trice, I've been impressed with Grant, Alexander and Graham. The D tackles played well at ND against the run.

5 of 6 games in 2020 were decided by a touchdown or less. You don't think a speedy playmaker could create an extra TD in 2 close games?
He was a part of 2 of those games. We lost them both. He wasnt a part of 3 of those games. We were 2-1 and no, i dont think he would have changed anything against NW.

You're talking win shares. And I agree. However, if your win shares add up to equal your opponent's win shares then every +/- fraction counts. A long snapper has negligible win share value, but he could easily cost you a game if it comes down to a field goal and he botches the snap. Same thing with a receiver with big play ability.
