I understand why Carson Edwards was fouled - Purdue not in bonus, etc - but really what was the point? Wouldn't it have been better to just allow the game to go into overtime?

Would need to rewatch but he was one step from turning to the basket and their defense was out of position. Pretty sure if he doesn’t foul there Carsen is going to the rim for the winning bucket.

I suppose in hindsight Michigan is probably asking the same thing. It appeared that they were trying to foul in the back court which would have made a scoring play by Purdue a little more difficult but Cboogie was too quick for them.
Sorry Fan, you where quicker on the trigger!

ya I think their guard just got beat and he was not expecting Carsen to light the afterburners. I didn't think it was a bad foul in real time. The grabbing of Haas on the pass was really not smart. That was probably only a 50/50 shot for Haas at best if the defender just stays between Haas and the basket and bodies him up.

Although it was also pointed out that Carsen was getting close to turning the corner on him (although I think "blow by" is a bit extreme).

Belein spoke on it post game as well. UM intended to foul before CE got to half court. Foul was actually too late from their perspective.
You are right. Just looked at what both coaches had to say about foul - interesting that Painter said he rarely chooses to do that as it means the next foul will lead to the foul line.

Yes - totally understand that, but it cost them the game to foul Carson because that made the foul on Haas a shooting foul.
This is a guess...but I have reason to believe it is a good guess. Michigan wanted to foul BEFORE it got over teh 10 second line thinking Carson gets a dribble or two and then foul with a couple of seconds left trying to keep Purdue from scoring. Purdue placed three players along the baseline under the Purdue basket and that brought the D with them. Michigan never guarded the trigger man but placed him at half court to prevent any half court long pass adn increase teh odds that Purdue inbounds around the Michigan FT line...two dribbles and a foul with 2 or so seconds left in the game was teh goal probably.

Since the ball was knocked out by Dakota on the opposite side of the teams and the opposite end. the ball would be inbounded there and although Purdue pulled the help away from Carsen...Michigan knew that the court area would have Carsen going to the left hand rather than the right hand and that Carsen would be slower. The ball was inbounded and Carsen let it bounce a couple of times before he touched it and delayed the clock from starting and got it quickly in front of the Purdue bench (almost lost the dribble) before being fouled. Now Purdue had almost 5 seconds to sideline the ball and time to get a good shot. I thought Dakota passed to Haas...just becasue that happened so much in the past..and I was watching Haas and th area away from the ball and not who had the ball. Carsen, took it out of bounds and Michigan clamped down on Dakota (knowing he is usually who makes the play) and Carsen gets it inbounds to Haas and the rest is history.

Now, seeing the game again...Purdue got more bad calls and lack of calls than I originally thought. I think there were two specific fouls on the floor that continuity was allowed and the player being 6 or so feet away and a step or two made the basket and got a FT rather than a non shooting foul. I also was able to catch the FT missed that Wagner got. Dakota had just returned and got in fron of Wagner, but really never stepped into him. However, the ball was deflected by Haas on the miss and headed to Wagner rather than a long board. Anyway, Purdue has them on the 25th and no doubt there will be some adjustments. I do not think the youngsters for Michigan that contributed so much will have teh same effect in Mackey.
