Each year, we usually have a player or two that enrolls early. This year is no exception. Several questions I have.

When a player enrolls early, who pays for his school? the player? or Purdue? Is he considered on scholarship?

Is enrolling early considered like a red shirt year? I know haarms enrolled early and it was considered a red shirt year, but his case was an exception to the normal rules.

if a player enrolls early, I assume, he can use two semesters as a redshirt. Would it be the Spring and the Fall?

Typically, when a player enrolls early, do they apply for a redshirt, or do they usually pay their own way, and worry about scholarship and details later?

as for our two linebackers. it's been said they will technically sign in the Summer and be counted toward our 2020 scholarship/ roster. Would they be eligible to play next Fall? or would they be placed on quasi red/blue/grey shirt status and have to wait until next Spring?

I'm not really concerned about GK. I believe he'll play immediately. and as far as expenses, he could always live at home this Semester. but I was thinking about that QB who will be enrolling early. As an out of state student, Purdue is not cheap. And I doubt he would play immediately. So upon enrollment, does he pay his way for the Spring semester and Summer Semester, and let the red shirt status wait until the Fall?

A last question about redshirting. I know they are only supposed to be for two semesters. But do they have to be consecutive? Could a player redshirt in Fall 2019 and then again in Fall 2020 or Fall 2022. I was thinking of Sindelar redshirting in different years. related.

Wow, you dont understand the rules at all. See below.

When a player enrolls early, who pays for his school? the player? or Purdue? Is he considered on scholarship?
  • If they are on scholarship, Purdue.
Is enrolling early considered like a red shirt year? I know haarms enrolled early and it was considered a red shirt year, but his case was an exception to the normal rules.
  • For football, no. No idea on Basketball.

  • Redshirt applies to the number of seasons of athletic eligibility, not to academic semesters.

  • Already answered.

  • If Wahlberg signs in camp, he will be eligible to play in the fall and his scholarship would count immediately. It was the 25 signee limit that was the issue. The other one wont enroll til Jan 2020.

  • No, he is on scholarship immediately.

  • Redshirt applies to seasons of athletic eligibility, not semesters. Your scenario isnt possible.

Thanks. I'm not afraid to admit there are things I don't know. It is by asking questions that I learn.

So with a player who receives an injury ruling and is granted another year of eligibility, how many years does the school actually pay for?

yes I could google it, but it's easier to understand when it's explained.

Depends on the situation. If the kid has a redshirt year remaining, and qualifies under the medical redshirt rules, he can be granted a medical redshirt and retain the year of eligibility. If they kid already used his redshirt year, he can apply for a hardship waiver to receive an additional year. The rules have been relaxed here. Sindelar and Worship should qualify should they choose to apply and should Purdue extend them another year

Either way, the school can choose whether or not it wants to keep the kid on scholarship.
