The Boilermakers opened their Italian tour on Tuesday with a 62-56 win over Lithuania University, with senior April Wilson setting the pace with a stellar fourth-quarter comeback, posting 25 points and six steals.
The Boilermakers started off solid, taking a 17-14 lead through the first quarter behind six points from Wilson and seven from junior guard Ashley Morrissette. Morrissette got her buckets quickly, scoring four of the first six and hit a long three late in the quarter.
Momentum continued for Purdue in the second quarter, holding Lithuania to just nine points and building a 33-25 edge at the half. Wilson poured in on in the second, burying a pair of threes as she was three-for-three from the field in the period. Sophomore Justine Hall added all four of her points in the quarter as well.
Lithuania came out of the half red-hot, sinking everything from the field as they dropped 25 points in the frame and built a 50-43 lead. Morrissette did all she could in the quarter, scoring seven more points, but the Boilermakers had six turnovers and gave up five offensive boards as they fell behind.
Wilson showed her will to win in the fourth, grabbing half of her six steals in the final 10 minutes, and scoring 10 of her game-high point total down the stretch. Sophomore Andreona Keys chipped in late with a bucket and a pair of steals as Purdue limited Lithuania to just six points in the fourth quarter, while dropping in 19 of its own.
Wilson finished nine-of-15 from the field, hitting three-of-five from three, adding two rebounds and two assists to her impressive totals. Morrissette had 14 points, five rebounds and three assists, while junior Bridget Perry stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals. Senior Torrie Thornton had five rebounds and four assists, while Keys finished with four steals.
“It was great to finally get out and play,” said Coach Sharon Versyp. “We had 10 practices at home, a 14-hour travel day and have spent a lot of time walking and touring museums for the last few days. It was good to see us get out there, compete, shake the rust off and get a win.”
“April was outstanding today. She really put her team on her back and did things that a senior is supposed to do. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”
