Purdue will land a very solid point guard

I am as frustrated as anyone about the NIL landscape and Purdue’s lack of ability to compete on that front. I was super confident Pack would be a Boiler, only to have the rug ripped out.

However, at the end of the day there are only so many roster spots available. Not only does Purdue have a roster spot, but clear minutes and points to be had on a team that has been consistently relevant. Furthermore, there is only so much NIL money to go around. Yes…we are not competing with these huge market teams that have bottomless NIL offerings. But I would also say a good chunk of college programs are much closer to where Purdue stands in terms of NIL than that of a Miami or team already known to be a cheater (pre-NIL). Painter and staff will continue to cast a wide net and bring in high quality players for visits. Tyrese Hunter is a great example. Will we land him (or a player at his level)? While unlikely, hosting Pack and Hunter shows just how good of an opportunity (from a basketball perspective) Purdue is for a transfer guard this upcoming season. I am confident that portal attrition + as clear of a path to a major role as any program can offer will help us land a quality player. Will it be someone like a Pack or Hunter? No…but it will be a player able to play a large role on a good basketball team.

Purdue should stay competitive on the court this year. The bigger concern is not who we miss out on this season, but how quickly our athletic department can catch up and help facilitate NIL opportunities in 2023 and beyond.
