End of first quarter Purdue 20-Murray St 13. Rebounding well, substitution pattern for Purdue is bizarre to put it nicely. Ellis is playing.

40-27 at the half.... CKG keeps putting Woltman and Learn in together pulling Petree and Harper at the same time...... she also pulls Layden at the same time although second quarter she put her back in. What this has doen is completely stall our offense doing these platoon substitutions. We have lost some of the lead at the end of both quarters with these bizarre subs, and there have been confusions on D.

Petree has 2 fouls and seems to play a little out of control, but leads the team in scoring at the half with 13 points on 5-8 shooting, 1-1 from 3 and 2-2 from the line. Harper has played great as well. Ellis seems rusty and not hitting her shots. 7-7 for the team on free throws which is a huge improvement from the Marshall game.

Is B1G+ working for anyone? NONE of the games on it seem to be streaming. Grrr

I missed the second half but looking at the stats, it was MOTS for the most part. Petree now has 9 fouls in two games, I think she needs to come off the bench if this trend continues. Petree is a gunner, she doesn't seem to pass up shots very often. Not a bad thing if she keeps hitting them, but again perhaps, coming off the bench might give the team more punch as Smith seemed to take a few minutes to warm up each time she came in the game. Only 8 points for Smith today, more like her games from last year, 3-8, 0-3 from 3pt range. Petree led the team in scoring with 23 going 9-15 including 3-5 from 3pt range. Terry once again with a double double without points, making it the SIXTH ever in BT WBB history. 8 players getting double digit minutes as Woltman played more and delivered 6 points and 3 boards in 14 minutes. Harper with 17 and LAyden with 15 were our double digit scorers. Terry had 9 point with 10 A and 10 Rbs. Learn still only got 9 minutes and if this is all you are going to play her, maybe we need to think about redshirting her and the freshmen.

You’re not going to redshirt 3 players, they already got 1 Frosh redshirting, maybe 1 more of the Frosh gets shirted, I doubt both. Season is two games old, let’s see how things go before Learn is deemed a redshirt player, she’ll get minutes.

Which is why I said IF..... Learn is too good IMHO, to waste a year of her eligibility for 5-8 minutes a game. Stoddard and Potts don't look to be in the plans for this season, so why not redshirt them if you are only going to give them garbage minutes in blowouts..... you can always pull the shirt if you have injuries and need them, but if not, a year of practice before playing can only make them better. Petree playing the way she is along with Smith really leaves no minutes for Potts unless you sit Hardin, and that seems unlikely with the current coach. I said over the summer that we had a log jam at wing and guard, and that players were going to get left out. Even with Williams leaving, we have more players than minutes, so some choices could be made to get the most out of the players over their careers.

Sometimes Coaches don’t want to have 3 redshirt Frosh, in fact I never see that. I wouldn’t mind seeing Stoddard redshirt, I’m friends with a family member of hers, that at this time isn’t in their planning. Many times Coaches give vets the early opportunities, players like Woltman will get the first chance at bench minutes, if she struggles Stoddard might get minutes. As for Learn, she’s playing 8-10 minutes a game, we’ll see if that increases, my guess is that it will. I am a little surprised that Potts hasn’t played more early, maybe she’s banged up, maybe the adjustment has been slower that many expected.

Thanks. Listened to Tim Newton on radio and he is always better than the student announcers but missed the visual. Watching the game now on B1G+ replay which works.

It is my understanding that, unlike football, in basketball you cannot redshirt if the athletes play ANY minutes during the season unless they suffer a major injury early in the season. So Learn and Stoddard and any other freshmen that Coach Gearlds has put in have already blown that possibility.

Also if Gearlds is a Coach Painter devotee (she is), he does not redshirt any of his players unless THEY and their family willingly agree to it.

Learn has gotten 5 and 9 in two games, which averages to 7 minutes a game.... Less than 8-10

In basketball, is so many minutes in the first few games... If they play after Christmas roughly, no chance to red shirt

2 of the 3 players you want redshirted are post players. So that wing “log jam” you predicted doesn’t hold up. But nice try. Injuries happen, Michael, thats why coaches don’t have 8-player rosters.

Also - WBB coaches rarely redshirt non-injured players. It’s not a common practice. We need to develop depth throughout the season as big ten games are going to need it as foul trouble will happen when we go up against the Big Tens best

Michael, I believe that is incorrect,

College Basketball Redshirting Rules

Redshirt Rules
For an athlete to receive a standard redshirt, the NCAA requires that player not be involved in any competition for the year (s)he is redshirted. Any amount of competition time, even 1 minute on a basketball court during a regular season game, for example, counts as a season of eligibility.

Redshirted athletes are allowed to travel, practice and even dress for competition for their team during their redshirt season, but the minute they step on the playing field, they lose their redshirt status and use a season of eligibility.

Medical Hardship Exemption

The NCAA allows a seriously injured athlete to extend her eligibility period through a medical hardship exemption, commonly termed a medical redshirt by media outlets, though the NCAA does not use this terminology.

An athlete can qualify for this exemption if she has a documented, incapacitating injury or illness that occurred in the first half of the basketball season and the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent of her team's scheduled contests, whichever number is greater.

TY, that has changed from when I used to follow basketball more closely. So the chance to shirt any of the players has already passed......

The biggest reason not to is it makes a big class of 5 even bigger, and throws off recruiting for years. trying to balance the recruiting classes back out. I just really think Learn has a lot of potential as a combo forward and Potts at shooting guard and I hate the idea of them only getting spot minutes here and there that do little to helping them develop this season.

Agreed, I think Learn’s minutes will increase as the season moves on. Stoddard is #3 in the Center pecking order right now, she has bulked up, they’ll be games where she gets important minutes, Potts is surprising, wonder if the adjustment has been tough on her? Also, if she didn’t play yesterday my guess is there has to be some sort of injury problem, in a 30 point game I’m guessing she would have logged some time.

Potts played a few of minutes, got two assists iirc. Everyone played, including one is not remembered hearing about... Rudini, K

Thanks, I didn’t see a box score, I looked at the season stats and saw she played in 1 game, I thought she got into the first one, I guess it was yesterday, thanks for correcting my error.
