This is a poor team, going to be a lot of L’s this year. It’s a shame what this program has become. At least we have the men that will take up all my attention because 49 points against a mid level team is brutal and shouldn’t happen.
They need shooters. They don't have anyone who can be counted on from 3. Several are reluctant to even shoot one.
And although they tout Swanson as a great three point threat, she sure needs to improve her shot selection.
Swanson's issue is she is the only real perimeter threat, so teams play someone on her giving no help and really prevent her from getting a good look. We run a very basic high school level offense, we have no competent point guard and no dominant center to do an inside out game with. There is very little this offense does that frees up outside shooters this year. And unfortunately Sophie is not a big threat to drive. Only Bass is a 3 level scorer, and she is not great at any of those levels.
Agreed, can’t win if you can’t score, going to be a long season, maybe 5-6 Big Ten wins? I haven’t analyzed the schedule but that would be a quick guess, that might be optimistic.
Swanson is a decent player, however, like you said she’s their only outside threat, plus she’s not the quickest, ideally she’s the third option on a good team, not the first.
Was able to watch the game from a laggy stream on tubi. Probably our best game played to date considering the competition(mtsu won 30 games last year and have most of their players back, should be another tourney team).
We had some crucial turnovers down the stretch but overall we did a better job of taking care of the rock.
Layden returned and I thought she gave us some good minutes. It was a bit eye opening seeing her essentially take all of petree's minutes even though Layden has been out so long with an injury. She did a solid job boxing out, bricked her first 3, was closer on the second. I noticed at one point, she went down to the low block and was telling the wing player(I think Lombard) where to line up for the play. She's not going to turn this team around by herself but I think she can help and she needs the minutes to grow if she's going to be a part of this program going forward. I also think she plays within herself. That should help with our turnover issue.
Puryear had some good moments as well, hit some early jumpers to get us going in the first. With how high and far back she shoots it, her jumper is practically unblockable.
We just need to keep growing, the defense has been better these last couple games.
Now lets go get massacred by some gamecocks tomorrow.
