Just listened to Coach Shondell’s podcast and he had some newsworthy items. Savana Chacon and Molly Brown have hit the transfer portal and likely leaving the program in search for more playing time, he wished them the best. Also, Eva Hudson from Dwenger an ND recruit a outside hitter has switched to Purdue following a ND Coaching change. Shondell said she’s probably the top Sr in the state of Indiana. Also, Grace Balensiefer from NIU is official, she’s a setter, Hannah Clayton a middle blocker that played at Iowa is coming in along with Emily Browm a defensive specialist from Missouri. All 3 transfers were starters for their teams, lots of moving parts but Shondell expects the team to be really good. By my count I’m seeing a roster of 17 players, last year it was 21, probably too many in reality.

Wow, even WVB has so many transfers! I thought it'd only be the revenue sports with NIL $. What's a typical roster size? I'd think last year's 21 was mostly b/c of the free Covid year that Otec and Newton chose to take?

17-18 seems accurate, not for sure though.

The last two Purdue transfers seemed mutual, Shondell on the podcast said it was about playing time, guessing they’ll step down a level and attend a program they can get a lot of playing time at, wasn’t going to happen at Purdue.

Love to see volleyball info! Taylor Trammel to PSU really sucks. I would expect a large drop-off this year to maybe the middle of the big ten.
Shondell wished her well, said he was surprised as anyone that she left. Top 20 team, probably 4-5 in the Big Ten seems accurate.

Not sure Doc, maybe a few.
Well on the roster the only underclassman with a "redshirt" designation is Lourdes Myers but it is confusing to me as she is designated as a "redshirt sophomore". She did not play at all last year so if that was her redshirt year would she not be a "redshirt freshman"? It appears Emily Rastovski did not play any mins last year and yet she is designated as a "sophomore". Megan Renner is listed as a 'redshirt junior" and that seems right as she did not have any stats/mins in both 2019 and the spring of 2021.

The whole redshirt thing is confusing in that way, especially with last years COVID season.

I attended the match vs UK on April 12 at Providence HS in Clarksville. I think there were 14 players suited up for Purdue and everybody played at least some.
UK swept in 3 sets, with the 2nd set not close as I recall.
They played a 4th - sort of an exhibition I guess - and Purdue won that one.
Team played well enough, but not at the level of this past season. Kentucky still had a couple of their starters from their NC team of Spring 2021 (Covid-delayed season), and they looked much crisper.

Losing all your starters except Colvin really showed. None of the above/mentioned transfers were there yet, but I think by Fall the team will be significantly better. Still unlikely to challenge for a B10 championship given the strength of Neb, Wisc, Mn, PSU, etc but this will be another fun group to watch.
Hard to replace the skill & experience of six (!) starters. If Otec, Newton, Cleveland, Johnson, Bush, and Mo Hornung had played they would have swept UK, pretty sure.
Crowd was big and loud - over 2,000 - with lots of support for both teams.

On his podcast Lourdes Myers was mentioned, Shondell said she technically has 4 years remaining, said she looks great. She used her redshirt year this season, her Frosh year was just a typical Covid season. As for Emily Rastovski, she’s from my neck of the woods, think she’s a non scholarship player that likely is a practice player that might get a little playing time against lesser opponents, not the type that would redshirt. Guessing as the years go by if she wants to play more like Brown and Chacon she’ll go elsewhere, it depends on what she wants in life, she might like Emma Terwilliger be content at Purdue.

Of the 14 that suited up 2 are leaving, Chacon and Molly Brown. 3 transfers and 3 Frosh coming in, maybe 18 women roster.

I’m not 100% sure on my 14 number, could’ve been 13 (Trammel wasn’t there but Chacon and M Brown were) - but I think there was another player whose name I didn’t recognize when they did the intro’s. Regardless, yes, 18 (or 17?) sounds ‘bout right.
Koch, Chinn, Renner, and Schermerhorn , (and Colvin & Ellis of course) all looked good. So did Lourdes Myers, really good. Ally Hornung solid as well.
They just need more reps together to keep gelling & learning each other’s moves, tendencies etc. Court coverage on defense was not the best - UK found TONS of open spots for kills.

Keep us updated, that’s the stuff that I like to read, hopefully we can have worthwhile Volleyball discussion on here during the season!

Amen my friend! Look forward to it too.

FYI, my posts have zero “insider knowledge” 😊. I only know what I read here, on Twitter, and glean from the DigCity podcasts and postgame chats.
I live 3+ hours from Campus so I don’t get to many games of any kind - but was thrilled to be able to catch the UK match in Clarksville.
And as long as discourse is civil, I’m all in. I enjoy your posts and those of several others on here. I’m hopeful for both the women’s teams upcoming seasons - and the soccer team too, altho I’m not really into soccer …..but they had a nice run in 2021 and any Boiler team has my support.

OK, I’m yammering and have made this post too long. Brevity not my strong suit.

I’d rather read a post like this any day of the week over a Facebook political post which I see all too often. I’ll talk Boiler sports all day, I follow the baseball team, wish they had a little better pitching lol.

As for Clarksville, fond memories of that place. As a 12 year old in 1982 my Griffith Little League team captured a State Championship there, memories that I’ll never forget, we lost a heartbreaker to Pinery Park Michigan who ended up getting second in the United States, the team that beat them was featured on a 30/30 on ESPN, had a kid named Cody Webster. What a great childhood, no social media, we just played!

I am hoping for a large improvement in the pitching next year as most of our pitchers are Freshman and a few sophomores

They can hit, the lineup has been great. Purdue lost a transfer Austin Peterson to UCONN, he’s from Chesterton, he’s 8-0 this year with a 2.95 ERA, has 94 strikeouts in like 70 innings, add him to the staff and you’re looking at a top 3 Big Ten team.
