Purdue TCU Series

If my aging memory is correct,Purdue beat TCU at their place 42 to 35 on opening day in 1969,then topped the Horned Frogs 15 to 0 at Ross Ade the next year.In the 1969 win,Mike Phipps threw for four TDS,then one more the following week over ND,and He rallied the Boilermakers in the fourth quarter the third week of the season and tossed five touchdown passes against Stanford in his classic winning duel with Jim Plunkett.Phipps had 10 TD throws after three games ,which wouldn't be such a big deal nowdays, but then that was about how many touchdown throws a starter usually had in a whole season. What great memories us old farts have.

I like the idea and series. I also liked the Missouri series. If we want respect, we need to play and beat respected teams. Playing and beating up SIU and Indiana St gained us nothing other than giving Hazell a victory dance.

Cant play southern illinois nor indiana state anymore anyway.

This. From now on the MAC game will usually be the easiest game on the schedule. I believe the Big Ten is strongly encouraging its members to schedule competitive games in the non-conference and no games against FCS.

Kinda curious to see how this affects bowl games. Without "gimme" games I assume there will be fewer 6 and 7 win teams. We've already seen teams with losing records make bowl games out of necessity to fill a slot.

Thats why the B1G added Rutgers, amirite

chuckle, chuckle. That's why I wanted to add ISU, Missouri, Kentucky, Kansas and Kansas St rather than West Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame.

Iowa St and Kansas would be perfect additions for all the right reasons.

Ok, now that we have added the #1 Neilson marketing area, can we please add a team we can beat ? It doesn't do us much good if the entire world keeps seeing us lose.

You're one of those people that would rather lower to competition until we win instead of improving huh?

Let's just say I believe there were a lot of teams that went to bowl games the past 5 years that I believe Purdue could beat . and the only reason they went and Purdue didn't was because they had 6 wins. I'd do anything to be able to see Purdue get 6 wins and be in a bowl game before I die. I'd settle for the one in Nashville, but not the motor City bowl. Even I have standards.

I think I've probably said it before, I don't care how you win, just win, and worry about being placed on probation later. Think about it, what's the worst that could happen? Double, secret probation??? We'd have to forfeit our Bowl game loss? Give up or 7th place Big Ten finish? limit our scholarships to only 3/2 * players ?

Adding teams like Penn State and Nebraska and Maryland has not helped our bowl game chances.

Am I being sarcastic?

I have no idea if you're being serious. Purdue has been in plenty of bowl games in my lifetime. Few of them were noteworthy or exciting. Going to a minor bowl game means next to nothing to me and I certainly wouldn't pass up playing good teams in the regular season to try to schedule ourselves into one. I also wouldn't cheat for any reason but Purdue football is just entertainment to me.

adding Penn State, Maryland and Nebraska has made the Big better, complaining about adding them hurt Purdue makes no sense, unless you don't care how good the team is as long as Purdue plays in a bowl game. I for one look forward to Purdue playing better teams, maybe not so much the last 4 years, but otherwise yes.

my point is in the Tiller years, there were certain teams Purdue could always beat in the BIG 10. before the season started, you could count on 4-5 gimme wins. And tiller would schedule 1-2 non conference teams that were also gimme wins. And in a good year, he'd pull out a win over MSU, UW, Mich, or Iowa and have a n 8 win season. Penn St, Maryland and Nebraska have all improved the caliber and talent level of BIG 10 football. To be successful in the BIG 10, Purdue needed to upgrade it's efforts to be on their level.

looking back, I would see teams like IU and Minn scheduling 4 gimme win non conference games. and then finding a way to win 2-3 BIG 10 games and go to a bowl game. the BIG 10 has now taken away that 4th nonconference game and has frowned on scheduling those gimme win non conference games. getting 7 wins in today's BIG 10 is a lot harder than it was when Tiller was coaching. I have serious doubts if tiller would be as successful today as he was when he was coaching.

I want wins. rather than just entertainment. I want to see Purdue beat the opponent they play, rather than facing stiffer competition. I want to see Purdue's name as part of a bowl game.

As for cheating, I know many teams cheat, while others have a very unfair playing field/advantage. I'd like to see that playing field leveled and every team competing equally. The reality is that will never happen. I see Alabama and Michigan and UNC cheating and what type of penalty did they receive? When you talk about ethics, what Zo did to acquire the top basketball recruit may have been legal, but to me it was cheating. And athletes may not be taking banned steroids, only because they have found a new not yet banned drug/supplement. the SEC uses female escorts for recruits. I've seen their pictures. the Michigan FAB 5 is still known as the FAB five rather than as a bunch of players who all took money under the table. I've become disillusioned with being the team that always follows the rules when I see so many other teams cheat the system.

That's why to me, I don't really care what or who the competition is, I just want to see Purdue win. And I don't care what the score is. When you talk about Purdue basketball, do you talk about the level of competition? or do you talk about the wins and conference championships? We played Vilinova and Louisville, but we talk about the wins over IU ! and we talk about those wins a lot more than the Kansas loss.

I wants some wins. I'm tired of losing. I no longer care about the method. it's that simple.

i guess people have their reasons for what they think, but I would rather play good teams and lose a few than play almost all cupcakes and win more games. Purdue will not get better by playing gimme win teams .

I'll also admit I'm a lot different than today's younger Purdue fans. I grew up following the packers of the 60's. All they did was win. and a lot of those wins were ugly and against bad teams. Nobody ever cared about the level of the competition or the stats All that mattered was the W. To me, Bart Starr was one of the greatest QBs in the history of the NFL. if you just use stats, he's probably not in today's top 20. A true packers fan would know Starr was better than Farve and Rogers.

So I'll ask, who was the greatest Purdue QB of all time? My choice based on only one stat would be Bob Greise. I know the stats won't back me on this. A tougher question, if Greise is #1, who is #2 ? Dawson? Daniels ? Herrmann? or Breese ? People shouldn't need stats to prove their point.

I watched the Purdue / IU basketball game. It was an exciting close game. A the time, I wasn't thinking about the stats, or the records of the teams, or how many players were McDonalds All Americans. or how many calls the refs missed, or if Smotherman was playing or suspended. All I cared about was seeing Purdue win. I have no memory of what the score was, nor do I care. I have no memory of who the high scorer was. I think biggie fouled out on a strange double foul call. What was most important was the thrill of winning.

That's what I want to have with Purdue football. I could care less who the opponent is or if Blough throws for 400+ yards. Whether it is 13-10, or 45-37. Whether it is against Penn State , or Indiana St, the thrill of victory is all I need.

And I remember when Purdue went to the Astro Blue Bonnet bowl game and we won. I didn't really care what bowl game it was. We won! and when we went to the Rose bowl game and lost. it didn't matter to me what Bowl game it was. All I felt at the end of the game was - we lost.

so for this old guy, in the end, all that really matters to me is the win. I no longer play fantasy football or worry about the stats. to me, it doesn't matter how close we came to beating IU last year. The ole oaken bucket reflects one thing - an I . and that I means more than any score.

You and I are a lot alike.I have been a Packer fan since I was 8 years old in 1960,and I can still remember seeing Chuck Bednarik tackling Jim Taylor on the last play of the game to preserve the Eagles win over the Packers in that championship game.I was working that January evening in 2011 when Green Bay topped Philadelphia to advance in the playoffs ,and a co worker told Me the Pack had won,and I looked at him and said December 26,1960 is avenged.Of course,he didn't know what I was talking about, until I explained it to him.Bart Starr was the ultimate winning NFL Qb as He was the first NFL signal caller to lead his team to five League titles and He did it long before Tom Brady was a glint in his Daddys eye.My worst experience as a Purdue fan has been watching them lose four straight Bucket Games.Well, that is behind us,and I believe Purdue now has the right man in place to lead Purdue football back to success.Boiler up!

Yea. I'd much rather play some good teams and risk losing than play bad teams for a certain win. Quite frankly, I don't want to watch them beat SW Oklahoma Tech even if it's a win. If they, or anyone else, want to play that game they can do it on their time and their dime because I won't give them either one to watch a pathetic exhibition like that.

Fortunately, it seems like most people aren't like you because the push to a 9th conference game and better nonconference games is no doubt due to higher interest and tv ratings for good, competitive football games instead of easy, scheduled wins. The Big Ten knows that TV interest/ratings is far lower when a Big Ten team plays an FCS opponent compared to another major conference foe and that is no doubt driving these new scheduling objectives like a 9th conference game and no FCS opponents.

I agree that the new scheduling agenda is driven by TV money to a certain extent by the B1G. However, its also a reflection on the change that the college football playoffs have brought. The B1G needs a team in the playoffs every year and a huge emphasis on the selection criteria is strength of schedule. If you can improve the entire conference strength of schedule it helps teams like Ohio State and Michigan make the playoffs. Which in return makes money for the conference but also helps increase the perception of the conference.

You can also see this with the Big 12 conference. They are desperate to add a conference championship because they feel like that is a major disadvantage to getting a team into the playoffs. You didn't see this mindset until they got left out of the playoffs a couple years.

I believe there are a lot more people like me than you believe. they just don't have the time I do to post on a sports forum. let's be honest, the amount of people who post on this forum pales in comparison to the amount of alumni, students, and fans Purdue actually has. Basically, the people who post here are mostly people who follow Purdue sports 24/7. and hammer and rails and KHC, Peegs, and GBI too There are some people here who could name every single player on Purdue's football roster, and the 2 deep depth chart by memory.

it wasn't the fans who forced Purdue to stop playing pansies and getting 4 easy wins. It was the BIG 10 network, and the BIG 10 Conference admin who wanted to create greater revenue . the BIG 10 wants a BIG 10 team in the play-offs. Why ? $$$$$$$$$$ Did they bother to ask the fans ? NO !

I believe if you actually polled the fans - all of them - not just the ones who post here - you'd find I am a lot more representative of the typical fan than you want to admit. The average fan wants to go see Purdue win. Just go to any bar, restaurant or bookstore after a game. The more profitable day is after a win, not after a loss to a quality team. When Purdue wins, it's fans celebrate. When it loses, they get in their cars and go home.

I may be in the minority here, but maybe some of you will realize what a true fan is like. We want to win. We want to fly our Purdue flag in front of our house. We buy Purdue coasters and Purdue polo shirts. We brag about our team. Without a win, we resort to analyzing football and basketball prospects , and put our nose in stats, and talk about if I were coach, or we complain and make excuses for losing. I really don't want to hear the excuse about lack of depth , and no other real fan does either. We see 80 + players wearing a uniform. And when we were young, good players played both offense and defense. I'm not talking about the 40's. I'm talking about Michigan's Woodson, and Peppers and Neon Deion ! I doubt Michigan had a depth problem last year. Rather than lack of depth, Purdue recruited too many projects who simply weren't ready to play. it was a lack of talent., not depth.

I know I'm in the minority here. if you want the truth , go to Follett's or Brunos or Dominoes, on a game day and ask them , would they rather have a winning record, and a P on the bucket or play a tougher schedule. When is business at its best? after a win? or a loss? OSU is going to get their play-off invite regardless of what Purdue does. So why force Purdue to play tougher opponents? When we start winning games, tougher teams will want to play us. Please don't try to tell me our future schedule is what the fans wanted. What the fans really want is to play Notre Dame every year and 3 non-conference pansies that we can beat, and a weak BIG 10 opponent for Homecoming. At least last year, inviting Iowa, we had a lot of black and gold in the stadium. That's what the fans want. forget all the forum posting about how much I know about football, and all year recruiting and prospect watch. and who are the potential players and their positions. the real fan could care less. Like myself, they just want a W. and why do I complain and post here? Because I don't hang out at Sports bars, and the bars around here are filled with complaining ilini and Bears fans. they are worse than Purdue fans. They have an excuse for everything.

I wasn't making my judgment based on this discussion. I was making it based on the decisions being made in scheduling which is driven by the conference which is driven by money.

Wonder what the gate revenue is for a game against SIU compared to a game against Notre Dame? Wonder what the tv ratings are?

Funny. What you describe here is someone who is a bigger fan when they support a winner which is not my definition of a "true" fan whatsoever. Quite the opposite. What you describe is what I would call a fair-weather fan.

I'm a Purdue fan because I went there and I have a degree from there. It doesn't matter if our football team is 1-11 or 10-2, they will still be my favorite college football team. My Purdue gear is still up in the house whether we win or lose. I wear a Purdue polo shirt every Friday during football season no matter what type of year we're having. I don't get my self esteem from our football program.
