A very talented player out of Ohio, with high rising stock. Could end up a top 50 kid. He has narrowed it down to Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, Xavier, and Pit. He will end up being very good and I know a lot of people on the board wanted him to pick Purdue. Two misses so far, but I still think it is far too soon to panic.

Most importantly, how can we learn from the misses? We always have to get better. Indiana and ohio state are 2 "down" programs, and Xavier is a 2nd tier school.

Xavier is not a "2nd tier" program. It is true (not just for the Purdue coaching staff but all of us in our lives) though that improvements can always be made.

I'm not sure why anybody would be disappointed in being eliminated by a player who never visited Purdue. We were never among the schools he liked best.

I thought CMP offered. So I guess he would be disappointed ........sure he has moved on (long ago) and has his plan.

well, I'm disappointed. ! the only reason is I think we have an overloaded backcourt, and I want to add a quality SF rather than trying t o convert Eastern or one of the other guard targets to play SF. give me another name of a SF being recruited, and I'll be happy.

In Painters positionless system CMP's .quality frontliner offers........Bingham, Bazley, Johns, Anderson and THT -- Not sure how hard CMP is/will be pursuing these 5, they all have offers, but we will see in July where he and staff are at courtside....

BTW - Johns about to announce - likely Michigan, so maybe there are only 4.

Don't think we are in the mix for Bazley. I know we offered as soon as he opened his recruitment back up but doesn't look like he has prioritized visiting us. Saw that he is wanting to get on campus at Syracuse, Georgetown and IU.....

Saw the rumor mill churning about Johns as well. He is at their team camp so wouldn't surprise me.

maybe painter needs to revert back to a position system rather than the interchangeable parts one. there can be a lot said about a player coming in to play a position he is familiar with verses always trying to learn how to play several new positions. I feel bad for Eastern as he will be expected to learn how to play PG, SG and SF rather than focusing on one position and defensive and offensive schemes. .

I'm thinking about Swanigan and JJJ. Swanigan chose Purdue because of Haas, and he was offered the opportunity to play PF. But we all know that's not what happened. JJJ is a projected lottery pick. Will Izzo force him to learn a new position because of the current talent on his team? Or will Izzo allow JJJ to play the position he's familiar with from his high school and AAU team?

You can't force a kid to choose a certain school and as I have stated before, I just don't think recruiting is in the vacuum that some think.

Unless you're an elite basketball school, or a party school, the kids today I don't think differentiate between the schools like we older folks do and choose, or not choose, a school for any number of reasons.

I believe the primary decision is about opportunity. As for the quality of schools, I don't believe Purdue really offers much of an academic advantage over any other BIG 10 school. UW and Illinois and Michigan and Penn St are great academic schools. All of the BIG 10 schools are respected academically and have great placement services. How many basketball players want to be pharmacy, engineering, ag or music majors?

I have to believe the three biggest recruiting tools are the opportunity to play, making the tournament and final 4, and having a chance to be drafted. On those three issues, Purdue has a good track record, but not an outstanding one. Purdue is not usually a destination or top choice for one and done players.

I am led to wonder. How close was Purdue to signing JJJ? or Epperson? or Simpson? Were we a close second? or a distant second? or a third choice? I ask the same about all the other elite players we missed out on

Swanigan chose Purdue because of Hammons and Haas and that did allow him to play almost exclusively at PF as a freshman. Last year with just Haas he spent more time at center but I don't think there are many schools in the country where he'd have played aside 2 certain 5's more in 2 years.

CMP has offered at least 15 guys, probably closer to 20, he can take 4. When a guy won't come to campus he (CMP) isn't crying over not getting the kid. That's the way it works. No campus visit--no commit.

A lot of people were high on Jerome Hunter and wanted him as a Boiler. He has been an absolute monster in the AAU circuits and has quickly moved up in the ranking. Painter offered him when he was still outside the top 100, and maybe he didn't prioritize him. It was still worth mentioning since his name has come up in several different threads (often as a "which hunter", since we had offered two. Well now we no longer need to specify)

As to Boiler and Frye, why shouldn't I be dissapointed? He will end up top 50 easy and we offered. I wasn't even pessimistic about the miss in the post. I said it was too soon too panic and Hunter will be a good player. No doom and gloom and no bashing. Simply pointing out we didn't made his final cut.
