Today was the opening of Purdue's summer camps.

Some notes from the field ....

• Tight end Justin Stephens was the headliner in terms of Purdue prospects. He is really tall and really tall and claims to weigh 240 pounds, in which case they're extraordinarily tightly packed in. He has a bunch of offers and is going to a bunch of camps but it might be telling he was at Purdue on Day 1. They seem to have a real shot with him.

• Louisville defensive lineman Ricky Barber came up, too. Purdue basically told him he had to, he said, so he did. We'll see if they prioritize him from here. He's kind of a 'tweener D-end/D-tackle, short for a DE and maybe not big enough at 250-260 to be a prototypical D-tackle.

• Here was an interesting name: Donnie Corley.

The former Michigan State wide receiver — he left MSU amidst alleged involvement in a sexual assault — is now at a junior college in Mississippi. That he came to camp suggests maybe he's been in communication with Purdue, but obviously some due diligence on the MSU issues would have to be done, and the university would probably have to green light things, the way it didn't when Purdue was set to sign former Notre Dame safety Mykelti Williams a few classes ago.

• Purdue commitment Mershawn Rice visited to just be around. We'll have a video interview up later. He's a specimen.

• Some members of the Boilermaker staff will hit a camp in Youngstown this week, with a couple satellite trips in Texas due for later in the month.

• Four-star running Zonovan Knight is at Purdue for his official visit.

• Some good 2019 linebacker prospects were there in Ohio's Cannon Blauser, Cathedral's Richie Haggarty and Detroit's Devin Nicholson, as well as 2020 Ty Wise of Carmel, who's already been offered.

In 2019, Purdue needs a big linebacker class, so that might be a position in looks at especially closely at these things.
