Saw this article on the ESPN basketball page by Paul Sabin. He was ranking the conferences and this is what he had to say about the Big10:

"The 14-team Big Ten has seven teams in contention for an NCAA tournament bid with two or three more that are in striking distance if they can put together some key wins in conference play. Caleb Swanigan and Purdue are lots of fun to watch and currently project as the best team in the conference (according to BPI), but the Big Ten does not seem to have a dominant team that looks the part of a national championship contender."

I hope this post doesn't become troll bait but I thought it was interesting that Purdue is "the fun team to watch" according to this outside opinion. Made me think about about the brand Painter is continuing to mold. Purdue is fun for me to watch as a fan, but I found it encouraging others may think the same.

We just don't have that "Sexy team" this year. The league is down right now. And, I don't mean down, as in bottom feeders. But, not at it's typical place near the top of the nation.

I'd still like to see Painter put C. Edwards in some pick & rolls and isolations and most of you probably know what I think about them playing one basic style of defense all of the time, but this season (have gotten better each season ever since the 2014 class arrived) they are a very good passing team (currently #2 in DI in assists per game) and most of the players are confident and ready to shoot when they get the ball in a good spot.

I disagree with you again. This team does some good passing and has cleaned up some of their common turnovers in the recent couple of games. One thing they are doing to make this improvement is to stop trying to make those low percentage passes that resulted in turnovers. C.E. gets lazy with some of his passes. Also, he is short and can get trapped in the pick-&-roll scenario. And it also depends who the other player is that C.E. is working with on this maneuver. Therefore, the P&R doesn't look to me to be a very good play for him to run at this point. I am sure that this will be addressed, but don't expect that till after this season is over and they can spend the proper amount of time to it.

But I will give you this. Keep on dreaming. Some of your dreams may be realized and work out in the favor of Purdue BB. But don't be disappointed when they don't. The coaches know what to do with their talent and we see/enjoy the results.

I don't know no team strikes me as a super team this year. Sure there's some good teams , but Purdue can take out any of them.

However I don't see them doing it consistently

Personally, I think they are "fun to watch" from a novelty standpoint more so than a style of play standpoint...I think that is what appeals to those that do not follow them regularly/consistently.

They can put points on the board when they are shooting well, but if they are not shooting well, as was the case in pretty much each of the games that they have lost, then they are not a lot of fun to watch I would contend...Purdue fan or not.

I think people that are not fans of the program find Haas fun to watch...find Biggie fun to watch...but again, that is more of a novelty thing.

Out of curiosity, what is the brand in your mind...as I don't know that I see one...that is not a knock necessarily, but, when he had Hammons and Haas, the notion seemed to be to win with size...and he went with guys like Stephens, Mathias and Cline so as to have shooters to go with said size...this team is still sort of set up that way it would seem, although they play a smaller line-up more often than in the past, so I don't know that size and shooters is a brand per se. Defense was a hallmark early on, but, that has come and gone in recent years. There was an emphasis on not turning the ball over and forcing turnovers when they lacked size and struggled to rebound, but then they went more towards emphasizing rebounding at the expense of forcing turnovers (and their own turnover numbers have gone up as well). Like say, I just am not sure that there is a brand per se, or one that is trying to be put out there...personally, winning games is what makes a team fun to watch and appeals to both prospective recruits and casual/distant fans.

Purdue had a really good opportunity to do that a year ago and came up short...results are a bit mixed to date this year, and it will be interesting to see how things ultimately play out...they are going to be solid again next year in a lot of regards, but, a different team again if Biggie is not back as is expected to be the case...but after next year, then what? Hopefully the answer is better than it was the last time that situation presented itself after the Hummel/Johnson/Moore class had run its course.
