Nice season for men's basketball but another bad gag in the first round of the tournament. Women's basketball had a much better season but this once-elite program is also out in the first round while IU's team scored their first tournament win in three decades. Football continues to be a disaster and seems to be falling further behind historic bottom-dweller IU.

The next AD at Purdue has heavy lifting to do to bring Purdue's major sports back to their historic levels.

Yet most will still blindly renew their JPC memberships and pay obscene amounts of cash to support an attitude of mediocrity. Those that dare to complain are cursed at on this board. I'm sorry if I expect more than one Rose Bowl or Final Four in a lifetime.

There's really not a lot of heavy lifting to do. Men and women's basketball are making the tournament, so there's no urgency there. If he/she can get football back to 6 wins, all will be well in Purdue's world.

Even the non reve ue teams are bottom dwellers.

MAKING THE NCAA TOURNAMENT IS NOT A FAILURE!! The NCAA is a crapshot. Duke almost blew a 23 point lead at halftime. Look what happened to Utah who has a lottery pick at center. Ask Illinois if they wouldn't have minded playing in the tourney.

You know what in hindsight I think Painter did a good job to get Purdue where it got too.... No doubt he coached a poor game the last 5 minutes against Ark. But I saw a comment off Hammer from someone at the game. They said Purdue matched up to Ark which I agree was a mistake in middle of second half. WHY THOUGH? The reason being Painter had no faith in his ball handlers against the def press by Ark. So Painter took out biggie and Haas and played small ball against Ark to try and handle their def pressure. It still failed. Biggie was a freshman and made alot of freshman mistakes. Hammons is soo good he is not even listed as a 1st rd pick in the NBA draft by some mocks. Alot of the talent is young on Purdue. Edwards is a good player. The back court to be brutally honest was sub par and arguably one of the weakest starting back courts in the entire tournament. I form that opinion watching guards throughout the weekend make plays. Imagine if Purdue had that PG from Kentucky.

Painter deserves criticism for losing a few highly rated PG's to transfer and backing out of commitments. It's why the PG position is where it is today. But lets see what this Carsen Edwards can do. Painter was on him earlier before others realized how good he has become.

The loss to UALR really sucked, but to think that the basketball program is in the gutter is being overly dramatic.

Yeah, it's ok to lose when winning by 13 with 3 minutes left against ALR, 7 with 50 secs left against Cincy, up 18 vs Iowa, lose by double digits to Illinois.

We say "at least we're not in Illinois situation" and U of I fans say "at least we're not Purdue"

Cevol03 didn't say any of those things are ok. He said the program isn't in the gutter.

This, I think, is one of the most damning criticisms of Burke's leadership over the past decade. Burke's goal has long been to build up all sports (not just football/basketball) while maintaining academic excellence (the so-called 25/85 club).

Ten years later, that really hasn't panned out.

not many, or even any that i've read, are saying bball is back in the last place gutter again,
but i also would not say we ended the year on a successful note after being upset in round 1 (especially after being ranked top 10 and nearly winning the BTT).
this isn't politics, not everyone is saying we're in the gutter, or offering painter a guaranteed lifetime contract.

By his own metric, Burke's program has fallen off significantly. The men's basketball program was the worst it has been just two years ago, but it has rebounded since then. The women's program was in the gutter last year but has also rebounded. The football program remains in the gutter.

For the three major revenue programs to have experienced historically bad seasons in such close proximity is statistically improbable. There is something going on here such as Burke allocating scarce resources to the non-revenue sports at the expense of the major revenue sports. Or Burke has consistently made poor hiring decisions.

The program is definitely not in the gutter, but it now has a stigma. Every time the reg season schedule concludes, we'll be hanging on for dear life for a high seed. If we get another 5 seed next year it's going to be "oh no, here we go again", then once we get to that first game (regardless of seed), it will be like ,"is Painter going to choke again", the media AND the fans will be saying that. So you see, it just puts un-due pressure on the whole situation, pressure to recruit, pressure to schedule, pressure to perform on the court and off, pressure on all of the coaches, & a lingering feeling all through the season of the NCAA tourney looming (or NIT) and a need to do very well to wash this bad taste out of our mouths. It will just take next year and a really good run (3 wins) in the tourney to disinfect this mess.
