Purdue 71, Tennessee 67 - Quick Recap

Nice write up. Such a physical game.

Missed FTs and TOs, poor shooting by everyone, save Loyer....but STILL WIN! Amazing.

Hope they have something left after that MMA battle....we will see how it effects their legs next game.

I hope we keep getting underestimated all season. People keep thinking FDU like that was the only game we played last season.

At times it was like the Battle of Verdun, but Purdue grits out another big early season win.

@Travis Miller , nice write up, thanks for sharing. Did it seem to you that the refs went out of their way to ‘even up’ the foul calls after the Barnes tech? From my perspective UT plays more physical D and doesn’t have Zach Edey on offense so it shouldn’t be surprising that they get called for more fouls but that really flipped after the technical.

I’m admittedly biased though, so it would be great to get your take.

I sure thought so.

Definitely were some make up calls in that run. our guys lost their composure for a time too. Good job by Matt bringing them down to earth.

VS a Marqette team that plays 8 deep. Attrition is our advantage with our deeper bench.
Our "deep bench" scored 3 points in 52 minutes. All three points were on free throws.

Painter played Loyer 36 minutes, Smith 35 and Jones 30 minutes.

Our "depth" in the backcourt tallied the following numbers in 20 minutes. zero points, zero rebounds, zero steals, 1 assist, 1 block and 3 turnovers. 4 fouls.

I'm not dissing the guys coming off the bench, but we hear the same thing on an annual basis. Eventually Painter will settle into an 8-man rotation relying on the starters and a few key guys off the bench.

Loyer's play yesterday and Jones' play on Monday is going to make it more difficult for the bench guys to get meaningful minutes.

I agree, Purdue was absolutely at fault as well. Beyond that though, it seemed to me that the fundamental way in which the game was called shifted, i.e. taking away some of Zach's advantage while allowing UT to play continue to play really physical on the outside. Again, I am admittedly biased ;)

IMO the front court depth is real and we continue to see that.

You're right in that MP is going to continue to ride his main guys in the back court (Smith, Loyer, Jones) in tight, physical games like this where experience is at a premium. I thought that Cam was ok and Ethan was pretty good, both in limited minutes, but neither are as productive at this point as the starting three. Myles just didn't have it last night and it wasn't a situation where, IMO, you can let him play through his mistakes.

I suspect that those three will continue to play more in games where Purdue is in control and particularly for Cam and Myles, where the game is less of a pressure cooker. Hopefully those two continue to develop so that by mid-season they're ready to play more minutes in tight games.

You were watching what I was watching. Was about to loose my mind. They Ref to the betting line. Purdue should have won by 10-15.

They mugged us, but we shot 48 free throws. Should it have been 50? Who knows?

By the way the 48 free throws were the most by Purdue since 1995 (49 attempts) tied for 7th all time in Purdue history.

So if a team is going to foul on every play their players should be on the bench with foul trouble or foul out. That happened with the bigs but not on the exterior. I know that rarely happens, which plays into the strategy by coaches like Barnes.

Calling a closer game on the inside and letting the guards foul at will plays right into the hands of anyone who doesn't have Zach Edey on their team. Even on the inside they were trying to 'even it up' IMO in letting the opposing bigs generally push Zach out of position with two hands (or a forearm and the opposite hand, either of which are illegal) and then calling it really tight on rebounding, where Purdue generally has a huge advantage and was dominating early. TKR in particular did get tagged on a couple rebounds where he legitimately fouled but most of the other stuff was pretty incidental compared to how they were calling the rest of the game.

There will be plenty of opportunities for them to get playing time in upcoming games.
