Purdue #17 in new AP Poll

Villanova the new #1 with Michigan State a fairly close second. Arizona is back in @ 23.

Big game in Indianapolis this coming weekend to keep the momentum rolling for the Boilers.

https://collegebasketball.ap.org/poll
4 points ahead of ND and 132 behind VA .... shows how hard it is to move up. We needed at least 62 points from VA to get ahead of them. More if the points came from other teams.

I believe that is about the expected rank! And that's the problem with the big 10 losing so many games this year! We were not going to move up by beating Valpo or IUPUI. Tomove up we need wins over quality teams, not blowouts against losers! A win now over Iowa will be like beating Valpo! And unfortunately the Butler game may be one of last quality matchups our team faces besides MSU . Wins over minn and NW will not help us climb in the ratings

Purdue just needs to keep winning and the polls will take care of themselves. Purdue is the third highest ranked 2 loss team in both polls, so it is hard to complain too much.

My bigger concern is with NCAA seeding given the lack of highly regarded Big Ten teams. Purdue is going to have to be very consistent from here on out to get a high seed.

I believe our seeding is gone out the window and barring beating MSU during the season and big 10 tourney, we will be very lucky to get a 4th seed

The way many teams are losing to lower teams, nothing is out the window yet. It's a long season and clearly some teams are vulnerable. Most will get better, some will spiral out of control. No one knows which is which. Our opp to beat a better team is highly limited, but higher teams have many opps to lose to lower teams - just as we do.

Disagree. 4 seed is a top 16 resume. Based on the team's consensus #17 ranking, I think they are right there. As long as we have no bad losses, a 4 seed is within arm's reach.

I agree. Purdue will just need to win more games than we previously thought, but the high seed is attainable.

Purdue is currently favored in every remaining game except @Michigan & @MSU. All of the top teams ahead of us have similar schedules, 1 or 2 expected road losses. Conference road wins can be hard to come by though. Ask Duke. If we take care of business and play as expected we could easily get a #3. If we get a little lucky and other teams stumble or have injuries (not wishing that on anybody but we of all teams know they happen) we could slide onto the #2 line. #1's not happening.

wins vs arizona, louisville, at marquette are very good wins

And those wins have gotten us a #17 ranking . We need to play more teams like them. And unfortunately the big 10 this year doesn't offer any. In the past a loss against a big 10 team would be considered as a quality loss! But not this year

Wrong , losses to Tennessee and Western Kentucky got us our #17 ranking. Just keep winning and when other teams lose, regardless of to who. Purdue will climb, if not for those losses we would easily be top 5 ish. High rank+quality rpi wins and a good rpi rank. Purdue could still get #1 seed even.

In addition to what others have said above, remember no B1G teams made the NCAA's pre-seed of the top 16 teams last winter--based on an underwhelming non-conference performance--yet Purdue received a #4 seed, and three B1G teams went on to the Sweet 16.

Nothing is out the window yet, but the margin for error isn't great.

And like so many othe teams, if you expect other teams to lose, so too will Purdue lose a game they were expected to win nullifying their quality wins. Many have said they expect Purdue to lose 4 big ten games. That would mean we will be upset 3 more times!
Yes the wins will help. But the losses even things out and we're a top 15 team and #4 seed

Not gone, but the margin for error is slim. 4 seed is the kiss of death. Need to get that 3 seed, which this year might require 15-3 in conference or 14-4 and BTT championship game. And that is assuming we get past Butler for once.

I really enjoy chatting on off topics with you Wol, but when it comes to All things Purdue you are down right depressing. Just enjoy the trip along the way, worrying or complaining about anything else is really quite senseless and if it doesn’t get you where you hoped you think all is lost- The rest of us are having a great time along the way.

ya but our tenn loss is now not a bad loss and a very good opponent.. W Kentucky lost at ohio so that did hurt.

If we win the games we are supposed to and only drop the ones we are supposed to we will be a 3 seed... This is purdue we are talking about though so no one can be taken for granted

we need to play a lot better than we did last night if we want to beat butler. sloppy play and poor outside shooting still plagues this team. siuedwardsville beat iupui. no way the game should have ever been close

You're right. Maybe I am too realistic rather than optimistic! For the last three years the seeding committee has seeded big 10 teams below their ranking. I doubt this year will be any different.

I believe we all know what it will take for Purdue to be a top 10 team! We will have to beat MSU TWICE with no future ugly losses. But if Purdue beats MSU twice, MSU would probably drop to a 4th seed, but it's doubtful Purdue would gain a 1 or 2 seed. I could see Purdue being ranked 8th and still receiving a 3 seed

The reality is Purdue is not going to run the table. I believe we can all agree on that. Being the second rated team in the Big 10 other wins aren't going to raise our ranking. So we have to hope other teams will lose to other teams for us to rise. And we admit going forward we will lose. Going forward a loss this year to IU. Could be considered as an ugly loss! I still expect a #4 seed! Will that make me a happy guy? And that's where I am! I'm kind of bored! I won't be really excited until the Big 10 tourney championship! If we win I'll be happy! If we fall short it's like last year.

Purdue is at a point where the regular season has sort of become meaningless. All that really matters is how we do in the dance. Even the threads are becoming boring and just more of the same? How many more threads are we going to talk about free throws? Can't we just bump a few of the old ones? The posts have all become very predictable and the same. Pardon me if I'm bored and allow you to continue to ride! I'm looking for a new ride.

Um, We only play MSU in Breslin this year

Wol, my comments to a couple of your points:
1.) While the odds are against us running the table, would you expect the team to feel that way and just quit instead of taking each challenge one game at a time? I certainly wouldn't and I have seen us beat the likes of MSU and their talent this year many times over the years...So no, while a tough challenge I believe it can be done and will believe we can win each game we face.

2.). The regular season is meaningless??? Surely you don't mean that. If so then you can not possibly enjoy the game of basketball!!! I love the GAME... Every shot, foul, free throw, and especially defense. I have for as long as I can remember as a child. Thus I am excited about every single game we play. If the season were 20 games longer before the Dance I would still love it. In reality I don't believe you really mean the regular season is meaningless...If so, all those highlights we all so enjoy reliving over the years would never be mentioned...would be meaningless. Wol, as old as I am our Boilermakers have given me many many great moments and still haven't brought us the National Title... but I wouldn't give those moments up for a million dollars. Enjoy the ride- It is simply sooo much fun!

I wrote a really long response and then deleted it. . You don't need or want to know my life story and/ why I'm so bored and depressed. Why do I post? It's usually to find fault in others, and to dispel their optimism.

The ranking is a result of two highly publicized losses in two days in a big name tournament.
Never lose two games in a row. Never lose to teams not highly regarded at the time. It takes a long time to get back.
Now we must win lots of games in a row to continue moving up. Yes our conference is down. So beat them. You just can’t lose to an Iowa or Rutgers type. Teams from stronger conferences will lose. We will move up.

I think this year is different. The monkey is off the team's back adn the seniors will be tuned in to settle a score with Butler. I look for a much better game than the last one...and if Purdue is shooting well...double digit win...but then I've seen a few games over the years and sometimes things don't go the way you think. However, I say Purdue wins...

Meh I think its almost a foregone conclusion we will get boned in the seeding wise

I just hope its not like year we lost in the first round to little rock whne they went out of their way to drop us out of the 3 line we deserved to a 5th seed. Funny thing was they couldn't put us on the 4 line because then they couldn't give their precious dukies who were like the 23 best team the spot

So sorry, Wol...we have had some good chats. Hope our Boilermakers can help brighten your basketball season this year. See you on line soon...

YAY you ... I too am old and have loved many, many games and many players. As I read your post, it hit me that I truly have always been proud of my team, admittedly, there were about four separate years that were tough, but I've never not been proud of the coaches and the players. Disappointed, FRUSTRATED, hurt knuckles, lost voice, but never lost pride. I have to think that would have been tough with almost every other team. Boiler Up

P.S. My daughter and son-in-law were cheer leaders and still wear PU stuff everywhere ... the pride rolls on ...

So you tend to think that it Purdue ended up the regular season going 26-5 and then got to the BTT to get to 28-6, the best they could hope for would be a 4 seed?

Is Kansas' hope for a 1 or 2 seed out the window because of back to back home court losses?

how could they ever put Kansas ahead of Purdue unless they forgive both teams during the tourney losses... ;)
