Pros

Conditioning! We were BY FAR the better conditioned team

Impressed with knox and jones. running game was good

OL run blocking. they controlled the line.

Cons
Appleby. Too many bad throws. Gotta hit the TE in the endzone. Dont hit receiver in ankles on sideline with 1 minute left. Got lucky his brainfart pass/fumble was recovered by PU in first half - what was that? Pop Warner?

Receives. Other than a couple times, I never saw separation. Makes it tough on QB

Play calling (shoop). Why cant receivers ever get open? It is all on them or is it the system? And why the heck did we decide to 'play not to lose' once we got the 4 point lead? Ugh.

Please dont turn this into a 'bash thread'! GhostofJack and others - what did you see?

Receivers didn't always run their routes hard or even complete them at times. Defense played ok at times but we still give up too many third and longs, and folded when it counted. We are inept.

Pros: definitely better conditioned.
- line play seems pretty good on both sides.
-linebackers good against run.
-receivers caught a few tough deep balls
- running backs are more than capable.
- seems like we were pretty physical.
- look more solid and stout overall.

Cons
- Appleby has no touch...throws everything 100% hard. Stares down receivers.
- we will be 1 dimensional against good defenses which will kill our running game.
- receivers not able to get release on the back shoulder catches. QB throwing late across middle.
-anthrop looks like he needs more time to recover. Unable to cut and limping.
- offensive coordinator trying to be too fancy when all we need is 2 yards.

Overall I think Hazell has improved the squad and we look like more of a Big 10 team, but until we have a QB who can be a real threat throwing....our ceiling is very limited and Shoop will continue to get ragged-on quite heavily. Blough needs to get some snaps against ISU in case Appleby falls apart against VT's defense.

This game falls squarely on the offenses no doubt about it 2 pick 6s can't defend that especially when one was the first play from scrimmage. Appleby and shoop made terrible decisions throughout the game and I have to think if we switch those 2 with anyone else this would be a w.

Having a better conditioned team (and a bit more depth) than a Conference USA team is not really something to hang your hat on. And at the end of the day, they made the plays that mattered at the end so not sure if it was really "by far"..

Hazell's pregame speech. Keys to the gate? What gate? The players were laughing at his pump-up pre-game speech.

And of course after the game, the highlights of the game have a subtitle of "Lost Key"

Sigh.

Just to state the obvious. The train is off the freaking rails if we hang our hat on our conditioning and that is our main positive of the day!

Top 25 in conditioning!!!! Yayyyy team.

Pros: I learned Marshall is the school you go to when West Virginia is too hard academically.

Cons: someone told shoop the correct kickoff time.

Careful, BoilerBulldog will accuse you of drinking to much !

Pros: Knox and Worship look like a qhality duo; offensive line looked like a group of veterans; Appleby's size and physical strength.

Cons: Two pick sixes and Appleby threw too many sideline routes out of bounds; defensive front seven was too hit and miss. They got sporadic pressure and made some big negative yardage run plays, but they hardly asserted their will. Offensive play calling with the lead. I get the desire to pound the running game and wear Marshall out, but you can mix in some play action passing to help keep the defense honest.

Biggest concern moving forward: NO WINNING MENTALITY. I'm sure the team has improved in many areas, but I have no confidence that this staff can get the team over the hump. They just haven't taught the players how to win.

What a jerk. Must be an inbred wvu fan. They take all the northeast rejects that can't get into schools in their own state. Our acceptance rate is less than wvu. They will take anyone and that's why they have riots and couch burnings. Met a bunch of classy Perdue fans yesterday. Nice folks. Obviously you are not one.

I don't have any argument with the comments about the OC, Appleby or Hazel but until we have a defense that can protect a lead we'll never be worth a d___. Same story for the last 6 years, a stunning collapse at the end of the game by a defense that had played pretty well up till then. We have a loser's mentality that was instilled in the team by Hope who gave away a bunch of games in the fourth quarter. It has carried through Hazel's first two plus years and I don't see it changing any time soon. Our big talking DB Captain gets run over by a nameless receiver on the play that sets up their go ahead TD. Pitiful. The worst part is I had bought the line that this will be a different team and year.

about the D, the names change but the result doesn't, reminded me of the game in Iowa City when they had Banks at QB, they threw a crossing pattern to their future Pro TE who ran up the sidelines for a big gain vs Spack's D and we lost at the end.

Pros - we didn't have any penalties that were glaring problems like off sides and illegal procedure. Those penalties show lack of preparation to team basics. This makes our team look more organized and focused, making them more efficient. Fundamentals were pretty good for a first game on both O and D. Wish, however, the D used good fundamentals on the last drive. Also, no dropped balls. The receivers caught all the balls they could and got their feet down. As others have said, the RB's look good and are really after it. That makes the line excited and they try harder. HC chasing the officials was good. He needs to support his players early and often. Pass rush was effective in the first half.

Cons - The two penalties for hitting out of bounds and the roughing passer were unnecessary, but were close and showed aggressiveness on the part of our guys which can be excusable. We didn't give up any points in those two instances. Pass interference on the winning drive was a makeup call for the same play against Marshall earlier in the game where we scored. I am not sure about the blocking scheme so far. It could be as little as the spacing of the lineman, because I didn't see many little holes and slots for our RB's to slither through in to the backfield. I thought we had to run wide too much. QB decision making to slow. That put the defense on him too close to throw several times. Pass rush was ineffective in the second half. No noticeable schemes to help free the rushers, just speed and strength. Defensive fundamentals lost for the last drive. Fatigue? And lastly, didn't demonstrate the last ditch all hands on deck desire to win, resulting in the difference making plays.

I am not going to discuss the HC, the OC or the QB. They are what they are.

Good catch - that was High School sketchy fire up

H-m-m-m-m. And Worship never even carried the ball one time (I think you mean Markell Jones.

You could see the "L" coming near the end of the 3rd quarter. Purdue (which according to the TV announcers has an enrollment of 14,000) tried to sit on a lead by running the ball. Had too many 3 and outs. The series where we had the ball on the 30 and did squat and doinked the FG attempt was so typical of a Purdue team. So was the defensive collapse with 7 minutes to go. When was the last time our defense stopped the opponents in the 4th quarter with the game on the line?

One of Purdue's biggest problems over the years that doesn't stick out as obvious is the lack of depth. Especially on these hot days and later in the season, you need to keep people fresh.

This is where the recruiting is a major issue and where my big beef spanning over multiple coaches is. People want to cling on to a few good recruits we get each year - that doesn't get you anywhere in football. We don't need 5 star recruits - that's not what I'm complaining about. You need quality depth and we have had way too many lower-skill guys over the past several years.

Pros:
Our o-line & D-line played like an experienced bigger line should against a good C-USA team.
Wide receivers took a step forward at least. I really liked Mahoungou, and Yancey.
Running backs looked about as good as they could've
Jawhuan Bentley, Anthony Brown, & Frankie all seemed to live up to their hype for the most part

Cons:
Offensive play calling
Complete lack of a vertical passing game in the 2nd half
Poor decisions, and accuracy by Appleby
Special teams play was average at best
Anthrop not 100% yet

Ya, right, Jones. Good catch, Dandelion. But, throw Worship into the mix there eventually and we could have the makings of a pretty good backfield.

First off, Pros:
-as mentioned O line and running game looked decent.
-AA's 1st drive after the first pick 6. thought he, and the team for that matter, responded well.
-I thought the front seven on D played pretty well. Bentley is the man, Repogle got GREAT jumps off the line.

Cons:
-we outplayed(not by much) them and found a way to lose.
-It pains me to watch Anthrop like that. dude was dynamic before the injury. I say red-shirt him!
-Vanilla play calling. would have liked to see more screens. OR a statue of liberty type play.
-AA, sadly, I don't think this guy is a B1G QB. I LOVE his toughness, but i don't think he has the touch and accuracy needed to excel.

Secondly. props for scheduling a non cupcake on the road game one.

I love the flat black helmets. Can we just have those permanently please?

Pro: I liked what I saw from the running game. If the running game is going then keep running.

Con: Appleby, I hope he has a good year but 4 int. is way too much. Not sure what the problem is with QB at Purdue lately? Each year is the same old story. We have a qb who under performs and wonder if the back up would do any better which they never do.
